technical difficulties

< 1 minute

Here at This Time Tomorrow, we're experiencing a few, minor technical difficulties, namely being, I can't find a damn thing in this room. (It literally took me 45 minutes yesterday to find a pair of black tights.) Remnants of the move, the black garbage bags (bottom right) are still strew about the house as I thought I would make it easier on myself and dump everything at once.

Wrong.

Good thing our couch is comfy, because I don't have a bed until I get my butt in gear. Which is hard when the sun is actually out shining today. I'm torn.

Ah. Hell. I'm going outside. Looks like the couch again.

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Update: I just noticed that there are four This Time Tomorrow dresses left at ModCloth, let's be spring dress twins! 🙂 Heck, I might have to get another one because I'm pretty sure mine is lost in the depths of this pile.

Super quickie today. It's my birthday and I'm celebrating in San Francisco with a friend, starting the second I hit "Publish Post." Time for some clam chowder from the wharf, shopping in Union Square, finally getting a chance to "Wicked" and then some nerd stuff at the Exploratorium.

Yes. I love the Exploratorium. It's true. What of it?

weardrobe, yes please

2 minute read

OK, so here's the explanatory post that I've been alluding to for days now:

Deep breath…

It is with great pleasure that I announce to you fine folks, I have joined the Weardrobe team as their new community manager!! So that means, most site-related questions (i.e. contests, features, profiles) can be sent to me and, rest assured, I'll try my best to help you out. Or if I can't, I'll find the appropriate person to bug about it.

This means, of course, I left Reno (packed about 11 garbage bags full of shoes and clothes and miraculously fit it all into the Civic) and have been spending the past week or so officially living in Palo Alto, getting a crash course on the company, how it's run and how you guys use and interact with the site. It's been beyond inspiring so far, especially working alongside some very dedicated and creative people who make things happen! Yes!!

Specifically, I'm focusing on creative and community relations and was hoping I could pick your guys' brains for a little bit in regards to Weardrobe. Have you visited it before? Perhaps you're a member? What do you all enjoy about it? Any thoughts or comments you'd like to share?

Please send Weardrobe-related e-mails to krystal@weardrobe.com. I'd love to hear what you guys think.

On a side note, today's photos are courtesy of Suz of Weardrobe. And yes, I'm running away from her in the last photo (just kidding, Suz, just kidding). She's awesome. And just about as odd as me. Maybe even more so. It's a toss up most days.

whew!

< 1 minute

I'll say it again, WHEW! First of all, apologies are in order for the longer than expected blog hiatus. Didn't mean to leave you all like that, but when interviews are booked all week, often back to back, I just ran out of energy at the end of each day. Luckily, my sweet host, Christine of My Style Pill managed to snap this perfect photo of us at one her favorite bar haunts, Spitzers. We drank Manhattans, gabbed about blogs and dreamed about future apartments for me in NYC.

I'm currently on a layover in Chicago but will be home soon with a more informed update of the trip. So until then, lovelies, curl up and enjoy your Sunday and stay tuned!

bagels and coffee and magazines and such

< 1 minute

Fret not. I am alive. And safe in New York. I arrived really late last night and despite my best efforts to post an outfit before I headed out for the day-long commute, I opted for a nap instead.

Right now I'm sitting in a bagel shop in Williamsburg, sipping some coffee, enjoying free wi-fi and reading up on some of the February 'zines. Lovin' it.

I also wanted to take this moment to thank all of you who offered help/places to stay while in the city. It seriously means so much to me that you guys would do that, basically open up your apartments and lives to me, without knowing whether or not I'm a psychopath, a klepto or a loud snorer. And for the record, I am not any of the aforementioned things, although the loud snorer label is up for debate.

That said, I do have to admit that posts will be very sporadic this week and I'm not quite sure when I'll be able to fit in an outfit as I'll be running around to interviews without a photographer (or tripod) in tow. I'll try my best, folks.

As for tonight, I'm meeting up with the lovely Christine of My Style Pill, who was so kind to host me for the next couple of nights! Drinks, dinner and maybe finally sleeping off this horrible jet lag. Ugh.

More coffee, please, bagel man.

a bit windy

2 minute read

If you couldn't tell, it's a bit cold here in Nevada. And windy. In fact, right after these photos were taken, the promised snow storm set in making me one unhappy Civic driver out on the roads.

On a serious and not so whiney note, I just booked my flight to NYC for next week, arriving late on Monday and staying until the following Sunday. I had originally planned to stay with a friend for the week, but as it turns out, can only stay with her for the second half of the week. I know this is extremely last minute, but are there any New York readers out there that wouldn't mind lending their couch for, say a desperate Nevadan to sleep on? I promise to stay out of the way and you don't need to show me around. I'll be out most of the day going to interviews and whatnot.

Also, I will happily repay in wine. Or your drink of choice.

If this sounds doable, please send me an e-mail at krystalbick@yahoo.com. I would really, really appreciate it! Thanks!

birds of a feather…

2 minute read

After all this small talk about New Year's I couldn't help but bust out last year's dress and prove, once and for all, that you CAN wear it again. Even if it has feathers on it and people do double takes.

Like they've never worn feather-adorned dresses before.

Those hypocrites.

As for the new year and the unfortunate start I had, I'm determined to make 2010 a good one. We've all heard that resolutions never stick and I'll be the first to second that notion. I'd much rather set myself some priorities on a vision board (yes, there is a corkboard currently above my bed now with magazine clippings) to help me not only visualize but hopefully remind myself everyday of what I'm aiming for. And, with any luck, by listing my priorities here in such a public forum, you can all keep me in check. (I.E. Keep me on top of it!)

So without further ado, here goes nothing:

1.) Move to New York City: By this time next year, no make that more like by next fall, I will be living in New York. I don't care if I have to find a comfy street corner and prepare my daily outfit posts from a rickety shopping cart, I'll be there, cage heels in hand.

2.) Job: Of course, in efforts to avoid my street corner example, I will need a job. ANY job at first, yes. But ultimately, I want to write. I have experience with news reporting and editing but my interest, my passion, is feature and profile writing, ideally for a fashion and lifestyle-related magazine. I apologize for the shameless self-promotion I'm doing right now, but I do have my resume and writing and styling clips available upon request. In the meantime, the job hunt is on for 2010!

3.) Blog: Improvement. Improvement. Improvement. Let's just say onwards and upwards for this section!

That's my running list for right now. More to come I'm sure. What are your guys' priorities for 2010?

a little help from my friends

2 minute read

Well, let's get the obvious out of the way first: Here's one of the Rodarte dresses I managed to snag at Target the other day. My plan of waking up early to scope out the fresh merch was spoiled by, well, life. But it was nothing a little luck at the dressing room couldn't fix. I spotted this pale pink/nude number hanging up as someone's discarded dressing room item, and it luckily was in my size. A bit of a hefty price tag, but all in all, I think this is one of the best designer lines Target has had in awhile. Stay tuned for the second dress!

In other news, I'm starting something NEW and need help/advice/tips/insider information. I'm looking at moving to New York City very, very soon and aside from applying my ass off the past couple of days, any tips from you lovely readers about cheap living situations, possible jobs (preferably writing jobs but I'll take anything!), internships, good street corners with friendly bums that I could live on, ANYTHING, would be much appreciated!! I'm just sort of diving in here and would love to hear from you New Yorkers and non-New Yorkers alike.

It would mean a lot to me.

If you feel more comfortable, please feel free to shoot me an e-mail: krystalbick@yahoo.com. And if anyone out there is interested, I have a resume, writing clips, styling portfolio and letters of recommendation all set to go. Just ask! I'll send!

Thanks guys! Fingers crossed!

I think my sanity has finally decided to crawl back to me. That and about four other bags worth of loot that will be making its world debut on here. More on that later, though.

wine, fondue, electric blue!

3 minute read

I bought this dress awhile ago from Saks Off Fifth, but it hasn't graced this blog yet due to a general lacking of an occasion to wear it. Don't get me wrong, grocery shopping in this could warrant some good laughs (from you and your fellow aisle fivers) but unfortunately, it's quite hard to set up a tripod on freshly mopped  linoleum floors. Yes, I've tried.

Sooo...as you can guess, I found an occasion to wear this, an evening involving the following: wine, fondue and a good friend who just got back into the country after a year of traveling. Only a few minor causalities (cheese on my dress, wine on my friend's shirt), but all in all, a lovely evening out.

In other news, darlings, I suppose I should play a little catch up from earlier this week when the oh so adorably stylish Lauren from This Little Piggie awarded me with my very first blog award: The Kreativ Blogger Award:

The name of the game, ladies and gents, is that I now list seven things about myself that will tickle your curiosity about me. So here goes nothing, because I'm pretty sure you all stopped reading by now:

1.) My goal is to someday work for a major fashion publication (Anna, listen up) writing fashion editorials and human interest pieces about the men and women that make up the industry.
2.) I love pesto on everything, which usually means I have green stuck in my teeth after meals.
3.) Because of the above comment, I always carry floss in my purse, just in case.
4.) I have a slight OCD problem, mainly with making sure doors are locked. I'll check about five times, just to make sure. Drives my boyfriend crazy.
5.) My soft spots include, but are not limited to: a good Cabernet, Dave Eggers and all of Andrew Bird's music.
6.) I want to live in New York City.
7.) I'm pretty much the queen at Scrabble.

Whew, promise this is almost over. Now, here are seven fashionably traffic-stopping bloggers I would like to nominate (ahem):

Fashion My Darling
Kansas Couture
Orchid Grey
Lacy's Mess
Trash On
Strings & Buttons
RoAmyLive

That does it for me, folks. I've rambled enough. Now it's back to this Jill and Kevin choreographed wedding entrance video. I'm strangely addicted to watching it. Puts me in a good mood. I know, I'm a sap.

weardrobe dress up day #2

2 minute read

And another lovely little item from the Weardrobe Closet. Short. Sweet and very coral colored. I also found I couldn't decide between striking figure skating poses or ballerina poses but soon after, I realized there's no difference really. So I went for my usual-- the awkward avoiding eye contact with the camera. Enjoy.

The boyfriend left today for Japan. For a month. As a reminder, Ian, some of the types of kimono wrap robes that I would absolutely love you forever for can be found here and here. Happy hunting and of course, have a safe flight.

And with that said, I'm officially late for work now. Ah, blogging, the ruin of so many jobs for so many people, I'm sure.

P.S. Yay for larger pictures, via Photobucket. Big thanks to We Were Damsels for helping me out with that. Quick question though (as I'm really f-ing late now) is the size OK? Or are they too big? Feedback is encouraged!

weardrobe dress up day #1

3 minute read

Remember that package that I received the other day on my doorstep? Well, let's just say the Weardrobe Closet was good to me. Trust me, the selection process was not easy, especially trying to narrow it down to three items. Tears were shed and blood, probably spilled, but in the end, I gave one of my roses to this BDG Convertible Skirt from Urban Outfitters.

The skirt itself is awesome. Fun pattern, great feel to it and deceivingly comfortable. After some inspiration from JoyfullyStyled.com, I decided this is a definite for the list of my fave summer outfits. The only problem that I encountered was that I wish it was an eensie, weensie, teensie bit longer. I'm all for mini skirts, even with my somewhat stumpy legs, but if I have to spend most of the day trying to shimmy the thing down to sorta cover my bum, well, Houston, we have an outfit problem.

Don't get me wrong though, still love this skirt. I'm contemplating holding it hostage, but I don't think the Weardrobe karma gods will appreciate that.

In completely unrelated but still exciting news, I was tagged by the incredibly stylish Liz over at Late Afternoon to let you, oh devoted readers, in on ten things that you may or may not or just may not want to know about little ol' me. So let the creative and oh so insightful listing of things begin:

1.) I'm a vegetarian. Unfortunately, I'm a vegetarian with no admirable reasons and have been known to wear some fur on occasion. I know, I know, send PETA out to get me.

2.) My claim to writing fame (thus far) was when I wrote an Onion-esque column for my college newspaper about Lady Gaga and Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons. Huffington Post picked it up, reported it as true and someone even included it on Lady Gaga's Wiki page.

3.) I love satire anything.

4.) My nickname at my last job was Chubby since I'm always eating something. In fact, I'm 99 percent sure they installed the new vending machine just for me.

5.) I ran a marathon once and lost my two big toe nails because of ill-fitting shoes that began to hurt around mile 5. After this incident, it may be best for me to find women's narrow fitting shoes, so I know that the shoes will fit properly for next time.

6.) I have broken the hanging rack in my closet due to excessive weight from clothes far more times than I would like to admit.

7.) I wish I could have lived in Paris and been one of Hemingway's fellow expatriates.

8.) Pssst...I have a confession. I don't think the world is going to end in 2012.

9.) I studied abroad in Italy for a semester in college during the 2006 Winter Olympics. I met Shaun White while I was there. His red hair is not that red. Disappointing.

10.) Making fun of Sarah Palin is a pastime for me. She's like a bad car crash. Horrible but hard to turn away from.

And now I am tagging the following lovely people:

We Were Damsels
The Owls Are Not What They Seem
Jen Loves Kev
Between Laundry Days
This Little Piggie
Lilli Living

Happy Monday everyone!

I'm sure many of you wonder what I do, professionally speaking, besides entertain the blogosphere with amazingly awesome outfit posts. (Just indulge my delusional self and nod your head yes, please.) Well dearies, here in Nevada we rough the desert hills, mining for silver and tending to the fields. Leather-skinned outlaws roam and torment good folk, while the constant threat of isolation can drive a man crazy. CRAZY.

Ah hell, but everyone really knows gambling and prostitution run this state. And me? I work 9-5. Yep, a 9-5 prostitute. Now you can say you've met one.

Just kidding. I'm working as a paralegal right now, killing time before I find the perfect way to word my pitch letter to Anna Wintour, making her realize that there is no possible way she cannot have me write for her publication.

Yeah, I know. The prostitution bit was probably more exciting. And, as I'm sure I just lost 10 readers because of that statement, probably more believable, huh?

Damn it.

To all the fathers out there, happy Father's Day. I surprised my dad with, what else, a Beatles greatest hits two-disc album, 1963 through 1966. Nothing works wonders like a Beatles gift for your Dad, mark my words.

Followed that up with some intense shopping. Stopped by the recently opened Saks Fifth Avenue, Off Fifth, also known as Reno's attempt to feel closer to the East Coast. Picked up an awesome little party dress (and not in black, hooray!) and an equally awesome front buttoning skirt for work. More pictures to follow, promise.

This little number pictured here though, I've been dying to wear for quite some time now, ever since I spotted Chloe Sevigny at this year's Coachella wearing an all-white 1950s beach ready ensemble. It. Was. Perfect. Too bad I didn't recognize her when I saw her.

New (old) shoes

Feeling black and white lately. Good news, move is 99.99999999 percent done. (I have the empty closet to prove it.) Bad news: I don't want to move. Other good news to counteract the previously mentioned bad news: Got some bitchin' new shoes today from the thrift store. They're such a beat up pair that I like to think someone tap danced in them. Can't wait to dress them up with something. Ah, the fix of an $8 pair of shoes. Works wonders, they should prescribe it more often.

It’s over

3 minute read

Wrote this Friday night, (er Saturday morning actually) before graduation. I was several cocktails and cigarettes deep when writing this and terribly past deadline for the Sparks Tribune. But I don't think I would have it any other way.

It's 12:38 a.m. and I graduate from college in seven hours. Five years, several grandiose dreams about how to leave my mark on the world and one long day ahead of me in a "one-size-fits-all" gown - it all boils down to this.

This one moment.

And I feel, well, ambivalent.

Yes, ambivalent. Not ungrateful - quite the opposite, actually. For the past several weeks, I've been burdened with the annoyingly ubiquitous question, "What are you going to do after you graduate?" I temper my use of the word "burdened" because I realize just how lucky I am to be so-called "burdened" with that question in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, I'm fortunate and I know it.

I feel ambivalent only because that aforementioned question, the dreaded words to any college graduate's ears, is downright frightening.

Thoughts of "the real world" and "being adults" suddenly take on all new meanings that gnaw at me and keep me up at night. It's no longer the question of "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Now it's "What do you want to be when you grow up? And by the way, you have three seconds to decide, because this it, your life starts now ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... go."

Wait, what?

Were we at starting blocks this whole time and I just didn't know it?

But perhaps that's not fair of me to ask. You don't need me to tell you that I'm graduating into a world that has seen record highs for unemployment, an economy in shambles and, as any other print journalist will confirm, a job market that is seeing pink slips, final editions and doors closing indefinitely.

Understandably, the logical and sane-thinking person would be rushing out for a job. Hungry for it even.

But I'm still so goddamn ambivalent.

The catch? I think we all should be ambivalent to a certain extent.

Just a few days ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Jim. Jim, who happened to be shopping with his sister in the same shoe aisle as me at Target, is the jovial, grandfather-type who sneaks you an extra piece of candy with a wink.

After a random conversation that started over the genius behind flip-flops, Jim recapped much of his life for me, including teaching psychology in correctional facilities, being a real estate agent, raising a family in New York and now being the caretaker for his sister. He even went into how he was creating a revocable living trust Michigan based with a legal team, as to leave part of his inheritance to his sister so she'd have the financial backing in order to continue being cared for after Jim's passing. This was planning that is essential, but the type that goes unthought of until a scenario urges us to have it at the forefront of our mind. It would seem like a hard transition of life, and it is.

And he's happy. He has a genuine laugh to prove it. I'm sure when someone asked him years ago what he was going to do when he graduated, he would never have described his life quite like it turned out.

And you know what? That's OK.

Yes, plans are great. Yes, the education to back them up, even better. And yes, yes, yes starting that job on the Monday after graduation will give you security, especially now of all times.

But, on the other hand, it's the ambivalence, the uncertainty - better yet, the unknown possibilities - that oftentimes make their own plans for you.

For the past several years, I've been a diligent journalism student. Took the courses, received high grades and even have been working professionally at the Sparks Tribune for over a year now.

Next week, I will be doing the unthinkable by quitting that job. It scares the hell out of me and, trust me, it never makes for a good answer to the post-graduation-plans question, garnering a combination of responses and raised eyebrows and stammers of, "Really?!"

Sometimes I can't believe it either. It's not the logical next step, and that's why I like it. All my most recent educational and professional decisions have made sense, been planned and executed. Except for the graduating in four years part, but you get the picture.

Nearly 99.999 percent of my steps have fit into the "plan" because we emphasize figuring out that "plan" so much.

It's 3 a.m. right now and I say, forget the "plan." In less than five hours, I'll be walking across that stage, shaking a sweaty palm and taking an out-of-step step for me. And it'll feel good.

Or, to beg the question in the words of Bob Dylan, "Oh mama, can this really be the end?"

To all those graduating, it's hardly the end. We're just beginning and I'm excited to see what new - and unplanned - places that takes me.

I love Sundays

< 1 minute

Highlights from today: Breakfast with mom (it is her day after all), shopped for graduation dresses to no avail unfortunately, went to the river festival and enjoyed a tall and much needed glass of beer with some fries, rode my bike to the nearest arcade and battled in an unruly match of air hockey with my love, enjoyed a late afternoon shower and am now about to enjoy some cheese pizza. I came, I saw, I Sunday-ed.

Oh, and picked up this awesome statement necklace at (cough, cough) Charlotte Russe.

Hot off the press

< 1 minute

Yep, yours truly did it. Five years and far too many bad decisions, it comes down to my named printed at approximately 10 point font on page A6 of the paper. And as is The Nevada Sagebrush's tradition (which is the student newspaper I work at) I was christened a new name for the final issue of the year. While I'm not exactly Carrie Bradshaw material, (I mean, who is?) I like to kid myself sometimes that perhaps one day, I'll have a closet that would make her envious and a syndicated column that would leave her grabbing for another cosmo.

Cheers!
