the new york public library {st. john}

4 minute read
Top, skirt and jacket: St. John; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Clutch: Charlotte Olympia (old, similar style here); Necklace: Bauble Bar; Sunglasses: Celine; Lips: Marc Jacobs "Amazing"
One of my first visits to New York City was with my family years ago. I was probably 9 or 10 at the time. It was the middle of July. And I remember feeling so incredibly overwhelmed, in the best way possible.
From the buildings, the hustle and bustle of folks passing by on the street, the honking of traffic almost at a standstill, the weight of the humidity making it hard to breathe and of course, the undeniable energy of it all combined -- it was absolutely electric. I like to think there's a mental picture of me in both my parents minds: wide-eyed, grinning, with a dash of "WTF is going on?!"
Hailing from Nevada, I wasn't prepared for this type of pace -- the kind that leaves you breathless if you don't have your wits about you at all times. It was strange and foreign to me, not necessarily frightening, but more like that dizzying feeling you get when you purposefully spin around too many times, just to see the floor and ceiling dance crazily around you, until you fall in a fit of laughter.
I loved it.
And then I saw the New York Public Library.
We likely had passed it during one of our double decker bus tours, cruising past Bryant Park, with it's array of trees sprinkled everywhere, offering shade to those hungry to read a book, sip iced coffee or simply to watch people scurry by. Rounding the corner from the park, there it was -- it's impressive columns standing guard at front, the lion statutes flanking either side and those marbled steps! Oh, those steps! This library had me at hello.
I loved how regal it looked -- distinguished and yet inviting -- like a quiet oasis or reprieve from the honking city surrounding it. I knew in that instant that I'd have to come back to that library someday and spend hours there.
I've since then been to the New York Public Library many times, sometimes to browse the stacks and cozy up with a good book and other times to simply take in the stillness of hushed voices and whispers, alone with my thoughts. It's my little escape, a quiet nook for me to return to, time and again, when I just need to hit pause from the city for a moment.
As for this show-stopping look? In continuation of my series with St. John, I like to think this number pays tribute quite nicely to my personal New York escape and the little girl who wanted nothing more to hop inside the library that day back in July. Except this time, she's upgraded her worn out Converses for a pair of Saint Laurent heels, a gala-worthy skirt and a chic leather jacket.

the vacationer {st. john}

3 minute read
Dress: St. John; Shoes: Manolo Blahnik; Sunglasses: Celine
I love a great dress that can just travel.

You know what I mean. The kind that can easily be worn to work, to happy hour, to dates and back again -- it doesn't let you down. You feel chic, put together, comfortable and like yourself in it. A jack of all trades.
When I find dresses that fit the bill, they're usually the first I grab when I'm heading out on vacation. Since it's always a little unpredictable what'll be thrown at you when you get to your final destination, I like knowing I have a secret weapon in my back pocket. One that goes the extra mile for me (and bonus points if it happens to get you compliments from your fellow bon vivants at the hotel).
This is where St. John comes in.
St. John recently invited me to their showroom to check out their pre-fall collection and while I've always known about the brand and some of their heritage knits background, I've never actually worn any of their pieces. Fast forward a few hours of playing dress up at their flagship store and I had amassed quite the stack of clothes I wouldn't mind coming home with me. All comfortable, easy to move about in and still timelessly classic.
Over the next few weeks, I'll be styling a handful of their pre-fall pieces as well as cooking up something fun over on Pinterest (more on that soon!). As for my first selection? This drop waist flared beauty you see here was an instant pick of mine -- the color, the fit -- it was too good to pass up, so I packed it up and hopped over the border with it, down to Baja, Mexico. I think with my newfound tan and a little extra sun-kissed beachy hair, it fits in all too well with the sunsets down here.

my 5 skin care must haves right now {boots beauty}

4 minute read
So can I sneak a #31 on my 30 before 30 list?
I can? OK, great!
In that case, #31 would go a little something like this, ahem: SKIN CARE.
We've talked a little bit about skin around here on the blog before. And to be completely honest, it hasn't been something I've actively invested a lot of time in until recent years. Perhaps that's the onset of premature warnings of taking the right "anti-aging" steps that you get bombarded with in your mid to late 20s or the fact that my skin seems to be much more prone to breakouts lately (from what I've read, it seems to be hormone related, so hey, hormones, let's get it together, OK?).
Either way, I like to think I'm looking at skin care more holistically these days. What I eat, drink, how much I exercise and even how much I sleep all plays a huge role, and I'm trying to be mindful of each factor's impact (perhaps another blog post, for another day?). As far as a product regimen goes, I'm relatively a creature of habit, often only introducing something new into the routine after it's come highly recommended by a trusted girlfriend.
This is where Boots Beauty comes in.
I've been a fan of Boots Beauty products for quite some time now, particularly their cosmetic line, and have always appreciated their efforts to keep organic ingredients and sustainability practices top of mind when it comes to their end product. Plus, the fact it doesn't break the bank (all of their items can be purchased at Target), certainly doesn't hurt either. So when they approached me about trying out their Botanics skin care line, I was more than game. Over the past few weeks, I've narrowed down my favorites, fine tuning what I think is a pretty well balanced, personalized routine. In no particular order, the top contenders are:
  1. Rosewater toning spritz: This is a completely new step for me in my skin care routine, that being right after washing my face at night, I'll lightly spritz this toning spray on, the goal of which is to tighten pores while I sleep and give your skin that little extra oomph to ultimately prepare it for moisturizing. I love the rosemary smell and it's consequent calming effect (perfect skin nightcap) -- and can already tell you I'll be toting this in my bag for mid-flight pick me ups for my many summer trips around the corner.
2. Ionic clay mask: This particular version has willowbark in it, which is said to have clarifying effects -- the salicylic acid in it is supposed to reduce the size of pores and improve blemishes over time. Given that breakouts are top of mind for me, I love doing a weekly clay mask just to remove the week's wear and tear on my skin, and this particular one, thus far, has left me with significantly less irritable, red skin afterward.
3. Cleansing mousse: Just like the clay mask, this particular mousse relies on willowbark for a lot of those same properties suited for oily skin like mine. The selling point for me though? The mattifying effect it has is amazing especially since I'm somewhat prone to excess oil, particularly in my T-zone and along my chin.
4. Radiance serum: This is another new step for me in my routine, that being a brightening serum, this particular one having a mild exfoliating effect. I've been blending in 2-3 drops of this in the mornings and evenings right after washing my face, and have already noticed a subtle glow effect it's had, especially around my cheekbones sweeping up to my eyes.
5. Facial oil: Ah, facial oils. I feel like every beauty counter I've gone to, they've made me swear on a stack of bibles that I'll never touch a facial oil because of my oily-prone skin. And while those who are perhaps more knowledgable about skin care than myself may still agree with said beauty counter experts, I have to say, I've loved my week so far with this facial oil! I've been using it in place of my normal moisturizer so as not to double up, and have loved it's lingering silky effect. My skin feels, dare I say supple, without venturing into oily territory.
Now I'm curious, have any of you guys tried the Boots Botanics skin care line? I'd love to hear about your favorites!

natural edit {what’s on my nightstand}

3 minute read
It's funny how packing up your life into boxes makes you really evaluate the sheer amount of stuff you can accumulate. Case in point? My closet took me close to a full weekend to really dig through and sort. A lot of folding, boxing up, rediscovering pieces I thought were lost forever and cringing at a few that had managed to stick around for that long. It's been incredibly therapeutic in a sense to just cleanse -- pare down to exactly what I need and want in my life and part with the things I don't.
My beauty shelf is really no different. I wouldn't say I'm necessarily a product junkie at heart but somehow, I've managed to fill a few overflowing shelves in my bathroom, precariously stacked and arranged with creams, foundations, powders, lipsticks and probably one too many brushes than I know what to do with -- a lot of them I love, a lot of them are samples I've yet to try. So naturally, when I tackled those shelves this weekend, I realized how very few products I really reach for on a regular basis -- the ones where I wouldn't be able to start my day without -- one of which is a great skin cream. As I get older, I'm starting to realize how much emphasis I put on routine, especially when it comes to something as foundational as skin care. There are so many products available that can help you with your skin health, and you can even read reviews online to find the best ones that suit you. A friend of mine showed me these beverly hills md deep wrinkle filler reviews when I was shopping around for cream to help with the lines that started appearing. I realized that I enjoy looking back on changes to my routine. I'm much more diligent about drinking lots of water than my former 20-something year old self, I apply a nightly eye cream (because those late night email catch up sessions are definitely catching up with me) and I don't dare leave the house without a base layer of SPF lotion on (Baz was right all along)
I recently read about Voucelle and was intrigued by the stem cell activation of it -- to essentially encourage cell turnover -- for firmer, more resilient skin. I wouldn't say anti-aging steps are something I'm actively looking into, but sometimes the best preventative care is taken well before you need it so I was excited when the folks at Voucelle asked me to test drive it. I've been applying the serum nightly (after drinking a full bottle of water to boot) and have been really happy with the results so far, especially around and near my eyes, which tend to be slightly puffy in the morning.
Have you guys tried it? Would love to hear what your thoughts!

left my heart in san francisco {date nights}

3 minute read
Top: Intermix; Skirt: Nicholas; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Clutch: Charlotte Olympia (old, similar style here); Sunglasses: Celine; Lips: Rimmel London Stay Glossy "Love at the Movies"
After spending five years in San Francisco, I have to say, I'm pretty fortunate to have had some amazing date nights in this city. Of course, the company is usually the highlight (OK, always the highlight, in case they're reading this), but there's something undeniably romantic about our hilly little town that can make the most unassuming Friday night memorable. Some of my favorites? Well, I never kiss and tell, but a great date night story is usually too good not to share a few details, right?
For dinner? Some favorites of mine include Park Tavern, Wayfare Tavern, SPQR, State Bird Provisions, Central Kitchen and The Cavalier. For cocktails? Wilson & Wilson, Absinthe, Top of the Mark, Palmer's and Trick Dog. For the hell of it? (Because let's face it, that's what makes the date memorable!) Cobb's Comedy Club, hiking up to Coit Tower (preferably late at night so you can see the city glowing from the top of the hill), hopping onto the California line cable car (also late at night), catching a showing of Beach Blanket Babylon, concerts at The Great American Music Hall and/or The Warfield and surfing out at Pacifica.
As for this date night outfit? My guy invited me to a gala over the weekend and I wanted to find a way to style this top I recently picked up at Intermix for the occasion. You may recall this skirt from my New Year's getup and I'm happy to report it's made several appearances in my more formal outfits lately, including this past weekend's events (which may or may not have been topped off at one of my favorites mentioned above -- Top of the Mark). I kept the rest of my look soft and feminine, with loose waves slipping out of a low ponytail and a subtly nude glossy lip, thanks to Rimmel London's new Stay Glossy line. (I don't know about you, but something about date night calls for a glossier lip, as opposed to lipstick -- much easier to kiss that way!). Lately, I've been opting for a nude lip and I love how this particular one has just right amount of sheen to it, so it feels fuss-free but still dynamic enough for a statement.
What are some of your favorite date night haunts?

that 9 to 5 {join me at express!}

3 minute read
I consider myself pretty fortunate in that my office environment is a pretty creative and open space. For ideas. For thought starters. For taking a crazy-outside-the-box-whim-of-an-inkling and turning it into reality.
So when it comes to dressing for the office, I'm always a little stumped. Because anything goes. Literally anything. You've all undoubtedly seen the Silicon Valley poster child. Hoodie. Jeans/khakis. Free t-shirt from a conference they attended last year. And don't get me wrong. I think this uniform works and I have lots of great coworkers who rock this most days. And a lot of coworkers who dress to all different types of drum beats. We're a big melting pot of style, culture, values and ideas. And I love it.
But it usually means, for me anyway, most days I'm a little overwhelmed by all the possibilities I could wear that day. Polished and professional? Casual? Minimalistic? Borderline on my way to the gym? (I don't do that last one very often, I promise.) Of course, a lot of what I channel into creating that outfit largely depends on what I have going on that day. A huge meeting or presentation? Brainstorm sessions that involve a lot of white boarding and running around time? Sitting at my desk and cranking out ideas? Or maybe I just woke up in a certain mood or have cocktails with a few girlfriends back in the city after work?
More often than not, I usually default to a blend of polished casual -- and I blame my reporting days for this. I loved feeling put together but needed the flexibility to run to my next interview. And while there's a lot less running at my current job to make deadlines these days, I still gravitate toward a certain aesthetic. Cropped ankle trousers are no stranger around here. I could create a flip book of just my outfits from the past 5 years that involve cropped ankle trousers. And these editor pants from Express are quickly joining the ranks of my MVPs. Top if off with a few more menswear inspired pieces, like this suit vest and understated blouse, with killer heels and I suddenly feel both chic and comfortable enough to hop onto a bike for my next meeting, if I need to.
Blouse, vest and pants all via Express; Shoes: Manolo Blahnik (crushing on this pair hard); Bag: Saint Laurent; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Cuff: Hermes
What's your work environment like and how do you dress for it? And while we're at it, are you free on March 3? Great. Join me at Express in downtown San Francisco for their Spring Fling party (if you recall, I helped host last year's even and it was a ton of fun!). The party kicks off at 6pm and lasts until 9. (Plus, a certain Kate Upton will be there.)
One last part to sweeten the deal? One lucky person will win a shopping spree with Kate Upton and a select group of Express customers the day of the party between 7:15-8pm at the downtown SF store. Travel isn't included. To enter, follow @expressrunway on Instagram and comment on my Instagram post from this morning so I know you've entered. No purchase necessary. Winner will be chosen at random. Open to legal U.S. residents and 18+ only. Void where prohibited. See official rules here.
Good luck and hope to see you there!

grin and bare it {going bare with bareminerals}

2 minute read
I'm currently writing this post over Utah and from the looks of our in-flight navigation map, smack dab over the Great Salt Lake. As you may have spied on Instagram, I've packed up again, this time to head to Milan Fashion Week (my first time ever!).
And while I'm beyond excited to jump right back into more fashion week chaos, let's talk beauty for a minute. I have to admit, my skin has been taking a bit of a beating lately. Between the recycled air on flights, biting winter winds and just not staying properly hydrated while traveling (hello, too much caffeine!), I'm finding some of my skin care routine mistakes are now catching up with me. (Insert forehead smack here.)
Luckily, my partnership with bareMinerals comes at a great time. If you've followed This Time Tomorrow for a while now, you probably already know I'm a huge fan of the brand and their clean, natural aesthetic. After all, any beauty company whose mantra is "Be original, be natural, be good" is definitely one I can get behind. They've recently launched their newest skin care line, Complexion Rescue and I've been loving the results thus far. Lightweight but with great coverage and extremely hydrating. It's a great fuss-free base foundation and keeps my skin slightly dewy with a natural glow -- two things I always find hard to "fake" during the winter because my skin takes on this weird combination of dry AND oily. I've always been a firm believer that less is WAY more when it comes to a lot of things -- beauty being chief among them -- and Complexion Rescue fits the bill for coverage with great skin care benefits.
Have any of you guys tried it out yet? Thoughts so far?

make your le marc {marc jacobs beauty}

There's just something about a trench and a poppy red lip, right?
If you've been following This Time Tomorrow for a while now, you've probably noticed I like to keep my makeup somewhat effortless and classic. A clean face, perhaps a little cat eye swipe or the occasional punchy red lip. Like an incredible trench coat, I keep my beauty arsenal timeless, especially since most days, I'm constantly running around, back and forth between Mountain View and San Francisco, from work to cocktail hour -- often only to get back home around 9 or 10 most evenings. I need a routine and fool-proof pieces that can last me throughout a whirlwind day (and then some).
Naturally, when Marc Jacobs Beauty approached me about their new lipstick, I jumped at the chance to take it for a test drive. I started the day off with a light shadow dusting from their "Dreamer" Style Eye-Con set and a swipe of their Le Marc Lip Cream in "Oh Miley" red (it's officially one of my favorite reds now). The wearability didn't disappoint -- my pout lasted all day with minimal touch ups (always a plus for me, as I tend to not have time during the day at work to reapply). For drinks later that evening, I made sure to stash the Highliner gel crayon in my bag for a subtle cat eye look.
To see more from my day with @MarcBeauty, you can hop over to their Instagram account where they let me take the reins and make sure you browse around their full collection here. extra mileage

3 minute read
Sweater: Everlane; Shirt: Bonmot; Pants: 3.1 Phillip Lim; Shoes: Manolo Blahnik; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Watch: Daniel Wellington
You may have noticed I've been doing a lot of remixing lately, especially when it involves this sleeveless Everlane turtleneck, this IRO jacket and these white Manolos. The truth is, I have quite a few big life changes on the horizon (all of which I'm super excited for, but don't want to jinx anything just yet by revealing too much) so I've been challenging myself to shop my closet more and more, holding out for well-timed sale splurges (ahem, like these Isabel Marant boots) that I know I'll get a lot of mileage out of.
Speaking of remixing and extra mileage, I've recently been introduced to a new fashion community app, WEAR, that makes it incredibly easy to get inspiration and shop looks based on similar items in your closet (which is something I usually find myself doing with Google Images or Pinterest when I have something in my closet I haven't worn in a while). If you've been following This Time Tomorrow for a while now, you know I'm a sucker for discovering new fashion community sites, and even trekked out to the Bay Area to work for one (anyone remember Weardrobe?). There's something about getting wrapped up in a new community site that's so addicting -- and what I love about WEAR is their large international presence. Lots of style eye candy from all over the world.
Have any of you guys tried it out yet? Would love to hear your thoughts! If you haven't yet, you can download the app here from the Google Play Store or here from the iTunes store. You can follow me right here.

have books {will travel}

2 minute read
When it comes to reading, I've always been the girl with a book (or two) stowed away in her bag, picking it up whenever she has downtime. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), what I've come to find is that I get my best reading done while traveling. I literally devour books when I'm on vacation. Case in point: I blazed through 5 books during one leg of our trip in Turkey (and then struggled to figure out how to carry them all back home).
Since 2014 was a big travel year for me (all of which you can see recapped here), I wanted to share a few of my favorite books that have seen me through multiple take offs, landings, customs lines, beaches and cities, from hopping around London to cruising with Princess Cruises in the Caribbean. With 2015 already here (2 days in!), I'm getting my next batch of reading together for a few upcoming trips. Any recommendations?

cheers to that {cruise-inspired sips}

2 minute read
There's something about being on vacation (especially of the sun-infused variety) that demands a refreshing cocktail. While I'm definitely much more of a hearty drink kind of gal (give me a Manhattan and I'm a happy camper), I can't say no to sipping on something lighter and, dare I say, fruitier, while lounging in a hammock or taking in a tropical ocean breeze. When in Rome (or in this case, the Caribbean), right?
During our at sea adventures with Princess Cruises, we had a few days dedicated to just sailing to our next destination, which oddly enough, I relished in. It was a great chance to simply relax, unwind and appreciate the stretch of ocean surrounding us. For those days in particular, I relied on a few of my vacation standbys: a classic Mojito and my latest obsession, Death in the Afternoon, created by Hemingway himself (all the more reason to love it).
Hope you enjoy!
Mojito
1 ounce fresh lime juice
2 teaspoons of superfine sugar
1 cup crushed ice
12 fresh mint leaves + sprigs for garnish
1 ounces white rum
1 ounce club soda
In a Collins or highball glass, stir lime juice and sugar together until the sugar dissolves. Add 1/4 cup crushed ice. Rub mint leaves around the rim of the glass then tear them in half, adding to the mixture once done. Gently stir and then add rum, rest of the ice and club soda. Stir again and top off with mint sprigs as a garnish.
Death in the Afternoon
1 1/2 ounces absinthe (but legally speaking, Pernod is a suitable substitute)
4 ounces Brut champagne
Pour absinthe (or a legal substitute) into a champagne flute. Add chilled champagne until the mixture clouds up and serve! Simple and addicting.

i’ll have what she’s having {wanderlust}

2 minute read
If you recall from this post way back at the beginning of 2014, travel was a big goal of mine. And I'm so happy and thankful to report that I checked some major countries off the list this past year. I headed to London for my first time. Trekked around Turkey for two weeks with my best friend, Heather. Then there was Jamaica, Vancouver, and countless road trips in between. And, of course, there was my first at sea excursion with Princess Cruises through the Caribbean.
As far as 2015 travel is concerned, 2014 has left some pretty big shoes to fill. And I'm already busy scheming and getting a few trips in the works for January and February. High at the top of my list, are a handful of tropical destinations (which seems fitting for this time of year), namely the Maldives, Santorini and Bali. But of course, I'd also be lying if I didn't admit a world cruise was looking mighty inviting right about now
To keep my more serious bouts of wanderlust at bay (like this instance), I like to pack a proverbial suitcase for the occasion, this time with heavy doses of resort wear's finest, fit for a lazy day at sea or exploring the local sights and villages.
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');

working from home {rainy days}

4 minute read
Growing up in Reno, snow days were pretty common. The minute it looked like a snow storm was heading our way, my sister and I would get our snow gear ready by the door, in hopes that 1.) school would be canceled the following day so we could 2.) go sledding at the park nearby in the morning or 3.) beg one of my parents to take us up to go skiing.
Granted, living in San Francisco now, snow days aren't in my foreseeable future anymore (which I kind of miss these days!) but after last week's rainy "Storm of the Decade" that hit the Bay Area, I think rain days will do just fine. Given that I commute about 2 hours one way to get out to Mountain View, a lot of my team will opt to work from home or our San Francisco office to avoid flooded highways, accidents and overall, a headache of traffic. And I did exactly that last week. I am used to working from home now. I do not miss the commute at all. Plus, since a friend of mine recommended that I checked out sites like filecenterdms.com to help me keep all my paper documents in one place digitally, instead of having everything on the floor or on the desk, I feel like this may help increase my productivity while working at home, considering not many people can work in a cluttered room. Let's just see how it goes.

The tricky thing that I'm often guilty of when it comes to working from home, is the trap of not changing for the day, or what I like to call "VC presentable", meaning you look put together from the waist up for video conferences and likely wearing pajamas below. This can happen a lot for people whose home work consists of options that don't require video calls, such as stock market trading - gsk shares don't care what you look like, now do they? What I've found though is that I'm much more productive and energized if I put together an outfit I feel good in -- even if the only person who may fully appreciate it, is Elvis. And sometimes, he doesn't even seem to care. 😉 If you establish a working day routine you'll be set! It will help you feel more intune with your day and help you feel more organized and ready to take on whatever comes your way.
Lately, for my work from home attire routine, I've been incorporating a slew of cozy socks, sometimes worn slouchy with heels when I eventually head out of the apartment, or sometimes pulled up like this pair by GoldToe, to peek out of knee high boots. They're the perfect cozy touch for staying in and a great finishing touch to an outfit for drinks afterward (when the rain finally lets up). If you'd like to try a pair for yourself, GoldToe is awarding out assorted pairs every week and even a $1,500 wardrobe makeover grand prize. Simply like or comment on their Facebook posts with the hashtag #80DaysOfGoldToe. Good luck!

We talk a lot about investment pieces here on TTT. Pieces that you know you'll be reaching for year after year; the quality never letting you down. And while, yes, I generally bucket bags, shoes and coats into this higher ticket category, there's something to be said about everyday basics, especially ones that don't break the bank. Jeans and sweaters that only get better with age, slightly broken in with love and memories.
As mentioned in my previous post here, I'm a huge fan of Hanes and have been for as long as I can remember. What I love particularly about their sweatshirts and shirts, is how easily they can transition from lounging in bed (full disclosure, I may have worn this black sweatshirt you see here to bed the night before) to daytime wear. With the right accessories, cue: this Gladys Tamez hat that I'm obsessed with and this camel coat, which I've also had for years, and it takes on a whole new elevated personality.

grey matters

Jacket: IRO; Sweater, skirt and necklace: H&M; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Bag: Proenza Schouler; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Watch: Daniel Wellington
It seems only fitting that after such a serious black and white kick that I would shift gears over to grey. And I've been binging on it lately, especially when I spotted this leather IRO jacket (snagged on sale during Black Friday!). When it comes to investment pieces, shoes and leather jackets really are my weakness.
I actually wore this all grey outfit a couple weeks back for the H&M store opening out in Salinas. Huge thanks again to everyone who made it out! I had a ton of fun shopping around with all of you (and mad props to the impromptu dance party that formed outside in the line).

Jacket: Mackage (via Nordstrom Rack); Sweater: Everlane; Scarf: Nordstrom Rack; Jeans: J.Crew; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Lips: Stila "Beso"
There are a few things that really kick off the holiday season for me. The first? Scrooged, Love Actually and A Christmas Story on an embarrassing repeat loop. Followed by multiple cookie parties, where you can finally blast that Pandora station you've been itching to play since last year. And seizing any and every opportunity to bundle up when the SF temps allow. I recently picked up a few bundle-worthy pieces from Nordstrom Rack, namely this wool coat and wrap around scarf and, have been living in them ever since. Sure enough, if they pass that test, it usually means I'll be stocking up on a handful (or 10) for a few folks on my holiday list this year.

for the beauty enthusiast {l’occibox}

2 minute read
If you're like me, you have quite a few beauty junkies in your life. Coworkers, friends, family members. And if you're also like me, you may not be a self proclaimed beauty junkie yourself. Let's just say, when I find things that work for me, I stick with them and tend to get overwhelmed by having too many options, unless one comes highly recommended by a friend. And that friend is usually a said beauty junkie.
So the catch 22 here? What do you get the beauty junkie in your life who's usually telling you what to get for your top shelf? Cue L'Occibox. Brought to you by the folks at L'Occitane, L'Occibox is a clever take on the beauty sampling program, curating to bring their best and latest products directly to your bathroom shelf. Plus, if you've never tried the brand before, it's a great way to experience it (all products are travel size) and for only $15 a piece, it's easy to stock up on two or three (or in my case, five).
This inaugural set kicks off with a special collaboration with Elle Magazine, who contributed the beyond cute travel pouch you see here, nail file and the illustration hand cream tubes. You can snag a set for yourself, I mean, for those friends on your list right this way (just make sure to enter the code "DISCOVER" at checkout).

one for you, two for me {holiday gift guide}

2 minute read
I'm a classic procrastinator when it comes to holiday gift shopping. Don't get me wrong, I usually get the big ones out of the way during my travels (I'm looking at you, Mom and Dad), but when it comes to my close friends, I tend to rely on a tightly curated list of my favorite items throughout the year, which makes shopping at the zero hour relatively simple. Here's a peek at what I'm stocking up on for my friends (and if you happen to be peeking here dear friends, stop reading now). 🙂

sunday routines

3 minute read
Shirt: Kit & Ace; Boxer brief underwear: Hanes
Confession: I've always had a love/hate relationship with Sundays. On one hand, they're a great bookend to the weekend, perfect for sleeping in, recovering from Saturday and on particular rainy ones, they're practically made for marathons of Blacklist or Downton Abbey (depending on my mood, of course).
On the other hand, I secretly dread them. When you have a slew of early Monday morning meetings, most of which are presentation heavy, that means Sunday afternoons can be spent toiling away in front of a laptop late into the evening.
My name is Krystal and I suffer from the Sunday Blues.
Lately though, I've been trying to turn this around with a few little updates to my routine. While I can't necessarily do anything about the amount of work that still needs to get done before Monday morning, I'm changing the way I go about approaching it. Perspective is everything, after all. Starting with, of course, how I dress for the day.
Ever since I was little, I've had a special soft spot for Hanes. They're a powerhouse for unbeatable, affordable basics and I may have stolen more than my fair share of broken in Hanes undershirts from past boyfriends. (Sorry, not sorry -- the slouch is just too good!) Even today, I love how easily they slip into the every day routine, even if that routine is say, lounging around in boy short underwear and a comfy tee and reading magazines, which is to say, what my Sunday morning looks like before my coffee run. From there, depending on the errands that need to be run that day, I'll frequent between different states of reading in bed, catching up on blog and work emails before noon until finally slipping on boyfriend jeans to take Elvis for a long walk on the beach.
Slipping in just these little moments of "me" time as made all the difference in the world and I usually end up approaching that amount of work I "need" to get done later that day with a renewed sense of purpose so I can finish early (and tuck myself into a good guilty pleasure TV marathon). Oh, and if there's a date night in the works for that evening, I may slip into a little dance session around the house (kinda like the gals here). Dance like no one's watching, right?
How do you spend your Sundays?

’tis the season {join me at h&m this thursday!}

Dress: Ellery borrowed from The RealReal; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Bag: Chanel; Earrings: BaubleBar; Lips: Stila "Beso"; Sunglasses: Elizabeth & James
Well it's only the 3rd day of December and I can already feel the calendar brimming with holiday events. And that can mean only one thing: party dresses are in full swing! I'm definitely of the camp that I should be able to wear my holiday dresses year round so I tend to not over do the red and green variety, but instead opt for statement LBDs. This particular dress by Ellery (borrowed from The RealReal) is killing it for me right now and I can't wait to wear it to the first party of the season next week. (Psstt...If you're feeling ambitious enough to tackle gift shopping, The RealReal just launched their 12 Days of Gifting campaign here -- snag one for them and two for you!)
Speaking of holiday fetês, I'm hosting yet another little launch party this week, this time out in Salinas, CA for the new H&M store opening at the Northridge Mall. If you happen to be in the area on Thursday, join me at 10:30am -- we'll be running an Instagram contest with $100 H&M gift cards up for grabs. Hope to see you out there!

timeless with movado

Sweater: Kenzo; Shirt: Equipment; Skirt: Zara (similar style here); Shoes: Saint Laurent (love this pair); Bag: Proenza Schouler; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Watch: Movado
As I get older (and I say this fondly), I'm starting to really streamline what pieces I want to surround myself with and wear on a daily basis. Where I once used to err on the side of more options, I find myself gravitating back toward a steady (and small) lineup of classics -- a timeless watch being one of them. What I love about this particular Movado watch is how seamlessly it can be incorporated into any outfit, which is particularly key for the holiday season when there are a slew of parties, cocktail hours and family get togethers, sometimes back to back. Plus, the smaller face and more heritage design is a nice contrast to my typical masculine watch go-to. I look forward to pairing it with a stack of bracelets for more impact, and even letting it stand alone as more of a statement piece.

live your adventure {eddie bauer classics}

3 minute read
Turtleneck // Striped shirt // Pants all via Eddie Bauer; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Bag: Proenza Schouler; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Lips: Stila "Beso"
There's something about Thanksgiving break that's always a bit harder than other holidays to return back to reality from. It's just long enough to be too long for a long weekend and too short to really be considered a 'break' -- it's like once you've hit your groove sleeping in, eating too much and shopping online sales in your pajamas -- BOOM -- Monday hits. And it's back to the grind, folks.
But!
I have a mini reason to celebrate this week. A few of my blogger pals are joining me at a little soirée Eddie Bauer is hosting this Wednesday where we'll be toasting their new flagship store digs with a little bubbly and tunes to shake off those post-turkey day blues. More to come on that soon.
As for this outfit? I have to admit, I practically lived in slightly different variations of this get up all weekend and loved how comfortably pulled together I felt the entire time. It's this fine balance that's really one of the main reasons I was excited to style a few of the Eddie Bauer winter pieces in the first place. Since moving to San Francisco, I've fallen in love with this incredible tango of city life and nature. Sweeping ocean views, gigantic Redwood trees, Muir Woods, Highway 1 coastlines, wine country -- they're all a short drive away from the city -- and I always get swept away by the idea of packing my bags randomly on a Friday evening after work and jetting off down the coast, On the Road style for a mini adventure. Honestly, what more could you ask for? If anyone is thinking of moving to San Francisco, take the plunge as I did; it's such a magical city! Be sure to contact sf real estate agents who will help you with your San Francisco dream house search. You'll soon be jetting off down the coast on a spontaneous adventure as I often do. Who knows, maybe it's in the cards for this Friday? And I think I know exactly what I'll wear...

old world {a moveable feast}

2 minute read
Dress: Robert Rodriguez (similar style here); Shoes: Henri Lepore Dezert; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Target; Necklace: BaubleBar
One of the things I loved most about our trip at sea was the excuse to dress up every night. There's something undeniably old world and romantic about boarding a ship armed with some of your finest evening attire, and nothing but a slew of dinner plans and cocktail parties ahead. And trust me, it was a moveable feast in every meaning of the phrase. Each evening, we enjoyed a new restaurant on board, taste testing our way through every cuisine imaginable -- from hearty steaks to incredibly fresh lobster and crab -- and everything in between.
Our last evening aboard, we enjoyed a private dinner at the Chef's Table, where the Executive Chef Antonio Cereda, prepared each dish for us practically before our eyes. While each dish outdid the one before it, I have to admit, the seafood risotto remains my ultimate weakness.

postcards from the caribbean {sailing away with princess cruises}

4 minute read
As I mentioned in my last travel installment with Princess Cruises, I'm a rookie when it comes to cruises. I think I've likely always felt reluctant to try them because I tend to get cabin fever pretty easily, constantly looking for the next thing to jump to while on vacation. What I didn't realize was just how much activity can be packed into a 5-day cruise. While our on board activities were a constant shuffle of pool lounging, drinking and catching the World Series while it was on (all of which was exactly the kind of R&R I needed), we managed to fit into several days of excursions, stopping off first at Grand Cayman (otherwise known as Sting Ray City) and then Cozumel, Mexico (for some Mayan ruin hikes).
As someone who always has her eye on the next destination, I loved the idea of waking up each morning in a different port, with a new adventure ahead of us. Furthermore, if you're tempted to embark on a cruise of your own, why not take a look at some of the latest cruise deals online to find yourself a luxury getaway at an affordable price? So, let's get started, here are a few snaps from our time on and off shore -- hope you enjoy!
Obligatory champagne toast while leaving the Miami dock.

My cruise partner in crime, Beca, and I.
To say we were spoiled by so many great meals and treats from the Princess Cruise team would be an understatement. More to come on our on board meals in an upcoming post.
The fearless crew from left to right: Vicki, Marianna, Jenny and I.
Once I got the whole Steve Irwin story out of my head, I warmed up to the idea of holding one of these (giant) guys. And I may have even kissed one (apparently it brings 7 years good luck?).
The beautiful thing about vacation? It's always Marg o' clock.
Mini victory dance after a pretty scary climb to the top of a Mayan temple (full picture below).

Stay tuned for another cruise installment tomorrow, featuring the outfit above.

adored {winter is coming}

2 minute read
Upon moving to the Bay Area, there were a lot of things I immediately fell in love with. Unbeatable proximity to wine country? Check. An amazing baseball team? Got it. An incredible restaurant scene? Yeah, all over it. And while I normally don't complain about the weather here (because it's hard to beat 65 degree weather year round), I have to admit, there's something about having seasons that I miss a lot these days, particularly the transition from fall to winter.

Occasionally though, we have these amazing stints of rainy days that let up for brief sporadic sun breaks, only to start pouring again soon after. It's on days like that, I love to curl up in bed with a few good books, several magazines and the newspaper and simply listen to the rain fall outside. Of course, the only uniform suitable for said activity involves a slew of ever rotating oversized sweaters (the kind that slouch perfectly off your shoulder) and barely there delicate undergarments (because who doesn't love the idea of something sexy hiding under layers upon layers of blankets and knits?).
For this year's rotation, I was recently introduced to the brand Adore Me and was immediately drawn to their selection of bralettes (a personal weakness of mine). This ice blue set has been on repeat lately and I love how I can layer it with different pieces for a subtly sexy peek-a-boo effect. If you're looking to stock up your rotation of sweet nothings, the folks at Adore Me are offering one reader a set of their choosing. open waters

2 minute read
To follow yesterday's sunshine-infused post from Turkey, I have a few more travel recaps for you this week and next, this time from my recent sea excursion with Princess Cruises. Admittedly, as much as I love the ocean, I've never considered myself much of a cruise person. (If there is such a thing?) But if there's anything that this blog has taught me over the past several years, it's that I can always surprise myself. And I usually do.
We set sail for a total of five days into the Caribbean Sea, stopping off along the way at Grand Cayman (Sting Ray City!) and Cozumel (near Tulum, Mexico), more on both to follow soon in a future post. While each day was filled with activity and one too many margaritas, both on shore and off, I have to say some of my favorite moments (and the moments that I seem to miss most especially now that work has kicked into full swing) were stolen out on our room balcony, simply listening to the ocean at night. It's oddly calming listening to something so powerful hum through the evening hours, especially when you can't see it, but really only feel it.

gun in your holster

2 minute read
Shirt: Everlane; Jeans: BigStar; Shoes: Henri Lepore Dezert; Bag: Proenza Schouler; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Belt: Moschino; Watch: Daniel Wellington
I've had a few books on rotation lately, namely Lena Dunham's Not That Kind of Girl (still making my way through, but love it so far) and the wildly Instagramable How to be Parisian Wherever You Are. Both have filled a particular type of role during my most recent travels, but it's the latter that I've surprisingly been taking to heart lately. Sure, I don't expect to turn into a Parisian overnight after reading it, nor did it challenge me in a highly intellectual way either, but the "snackable" bits of advice (on love, style, confidence, sex, you name it), have been exactly what I've needed to keep in mind these past couple of weeks.
One particular favorite quote reads: "The signature item is an attitude. It is the gun in your holster that makes you feel well dressed and invincible."
Lately, I couldn't be be relying on this quote more. Work has been running me through some pretty long hours (it is holiday season after all) and while I love the go-go-go nature of it, I'm more often than not, getting dressed while it's still dark out, which makes feeling put together at all times, a bit tricky.
Fortunately, a great rotation of black skinny jeans (like this pair from Big Star, which I've been living in lately) and an oversized silk blouse are really all I need to get through the door. For a daily uniform, it's understated, chic and polished without looking too overdone, and I love that while it only took 2 minutes to put together, it still gives me that attitude/confidence boost to really take on my day. Plus, these jeans fit like a glove at just the right high-rise cut -- striking the perfect balance between slightly formal and slightly off duty. Net, net, if my attitude is the gun in my holster, then this uniform is my ammo.

laced

3 minute read
Dress: Derek Lam (on sale!); Shoes: Henri Lepore Dezert; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Necklace: Jennifer Zeuner
This dress found it's way onto Instagram a few weeks back and I loved seeing the comments come in about it. While it somewhat lacks in hanger appeal, I have to say it's probably one of my favorite dress purchases to date, combining so many go-to elements for me. Black and white. A little bit of intrigue with the different lace varieties. And the hug-like silhouette that then flares out at the hem. It's just the kind of dress that I feel confident and like myself in, which really, what more can you ask for? Of course, the fact it was also majorly on sale certainly helps as well. 🙂
As for the occasion? This past weekend I attended the last stop of the College Fashion Week tour put on by Her Campus. Fun fact (that some of you may know): I started this blog back when I was graduating college. Granted, I'm far from college age now, but I applaud the idea of making a fashion show specifically for college-age girls, with accessible but on trend pieces. I'd be lying if I didn't admit it's something I would have loved if it were available when I was in school, because, really, college is one of those times you're truly discovering who you are outside the context of home, family, high school, and that very much that spills over into how you begin to shape and discover your own personal style. I, for one, experimented with a lot of styles in college -- some good, some bad and some downright, well, ugly. But the process was fun, nonetheless.
That said, Saturday's festivities were a blast and I loved getting the backstage pamper treatment with full makeup thanks to Bare Minerals, followed by some incredible hair magic thanks to Tyler at Tresemmé. Huge thanks again to the College Fashion Week and the Teen Vogue team for having me!

blue jean baby {dl 1961}

3 minute read
While I live in jeans pretty much year round, there's something about picking up a few new pairs for fall that still gets me excited. Don't get me wrong, I love a pair that's been broken in, year after year, (still have a pair from high school that I *kinda* fit into) but I'm always amazed at how fast evolving and innovative the jean industry can really be with new fits, new stretch and new sculpting capabilities. Really, it's funny to think that something as time-honored and as classic as the all American blue jean seems to reinvent itself time and again.
So naturally, when DL 1961 asked me to try out their new smart denim technology, I was definitely curious. Denim is such a huge part of my life, but I demand a lot out of a good pair. On any given day, I'm usually running (or biking) to meetings across campus, helping style on set at shoots or simply need to look that certain polished but undone Silicon Valley chic. My jeans need to stand up to the challenge. And this pair? I think it's won me over. Comfortable stretch, without losing that substantial denim feel, just the right amount of give where I need it and a great overall slimming effect. Oh, and well, I like to think they make my butt look good too, so there's that.... 🙂
Have you guys tried out their smart denim technology yet? Would love to hear what you think!

what’s in my bag {evening edition}

2 minute read
Packing an evening bag (or clutch rather) can be tricky. You have limited space to pretty much hold your essentials for the night, so editing is key. Since I've gotten older, I've adopted more of a mom approach to my evening bag (yes, I really do bring a granola bar with me) but I think I've finally fine tuned it. Here's a peek inside...
The necessities: ID, cash, credit cards...because you clearly won't get far without them.
COVERGIRL Outlast Illumina lip color: I have a confession to make. I'm pretty awful at checking my lipstick for touchups, especially for evenings out. It somehow always slips my mind and before I know it, I'm taking my makeup off at the end of the night, wondering how long my lips were left looking like that. I know, I know. Blasphemy. But! I think I've met my match. This duo by COVERGIRL is the perfect night out pair in that the color lasts up to 24 hours, thanks to the topcoat gloss that locks in extra moisture. Just a few little swipes of the topcoat (in between cocktails) and I'm good to go.
Spare earrings: Just in case you need to add a little sparkle to your look.
Kind granola bar: I started bringing snacks with me for evenings out just in case I don't have time to grab something to eat before heading out. Granted, it definitely doesn't substitute a full meal before drinking, but it does help tide me over until I sit down and eat a proper meal (or get late night french fries, whatever comes first).
Crest 3D Whitening Strips: Lately, I've been packing these in my clutch to throw on before heading out (generally an hour before).
Altoids: Because you never know who you might strike up a conversation with at the bar. 🙂
And in case you're just joining now, you can see my other bag edits here and here.
