You may recall I posted this photo of Yasmin Sewell back during the after Christmas sale season, wearing a to-die-for off the shoulder, midi dress. Basically perfection in a nut shell. Well, those sales have come and gone but I can' seem to get that dress off my mind! Naturally, being as OCD as I am, I've scoured the internet for similar dresses and was ecstatic to find this number from Reformation. While it's not quite the full skirt midi I was looking for, it's definitely a sexy little black dress that I can stand behind.
I bought this pair of overalls over my first summer here in San Francisco (almost 4 or so years ago now). Oddly enough, I remember buying them for a few paint projects I had in the works, never fully intending to wear them out save for an occasional coffee run, paint splatters and all.
Flash forward over the years, and I've managed to dress them up in ways I don't think overalls were ever intended to be worn (some good and some not so good). Admittedly, I have to say this is the part of fashion and trends in general that I can see why people deem it all too fickle (um, ya, that neon lucite clutch of mine is still sitting in my closet, gathering dust). But sometimes when the trend is a comfortable, broken-in boyfriend denim one-piece that harkens back to elementary school days, well I'm sold. Doesn't hurt that I always have something to paint in either.
Lately, I've had a new appreciation for flats. Don't get me wrong, I love a good bold heel, but my work schedule between the office and lots of on-site photo shoots has pretty much demanded mobility these days. I recently picked up a few pairs (including these slip on sneakers I shared here) that have been on heavy rotation ever since. Aside from the period I wore my Birkenstocks to death in middle school, I don't think my feet have ever been happier. And those Birkenstocks were pretty darn comfy.
I wore this outfit this past Sunday for a day of wandering around the de Young Museum to see the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit with a few girlfriends. As someone who's always admired O'Keeffe's work, I was surprised to realize how little I really knew about her as an artist or as a person. One quote in particular from the exhibit really stuck with me afterward:
"I've been absolutely terrified every moment of my life and I've never let it keep me from doing a single thing that I wanted to do."
With that, I hope you'll be terrified today and that it will push you to do something you wouldn't normally do. And I'll do the same.
As I mentioned a few weeks back, my daily routine (at least Monday through Friday) relies pretty heavily on a few key players: first, a pair of great fitting jeans, second, bold heels (obvi), and lastly, a statement jacket or blazer. So naturally, when Ted Baker asked me to style a few pieces from their SS14 collection, this floral moto jacket and these distressed jeans caught my eye instantly. (And the fact that this jacket is made out of a neoprene material certainly didn't hurt its case either.) As someone who needs her closet MVPs to go the extra mile -- I love how this jacket adds just the right amount of fresh air to my spring uniform. It's just so cheery!

I've always been notorious for jumping the gun, especially when it comes to transitional dressing. Just ask my mom. I was that kid, eagerly waiting to sport all my new tank tops and shorts the minute winter weather seemed to be waning. And I usually regretted it by mid-day, wishing I had a few of my warmer layers with me to wrap up in.
Granted, I like to think I'm much wiser now (or just got tired of freezing) and have, in my humble opinion, mastered a few layering tricks that come in handy for the awkward in between seasons. Especially in San Francisco, where it's pretty common to wake up to blue, sunny skies and return after work to fog, harsh winds and surprise showers. Go figure.
This time around, I've partnered with White House Black Market to show just how you can blend your new spring pieces with the trusty autumn/winter staples you already have in rotation and still look put together. It's all about balance really. While these slouchy printed pants will be my go-tos for beach walks later this season, the leather jacket toughens it up, making it instantly street ready (and warm). Silk tops (like the one here) are always MVPs in my closet, but during these months, I'll usually make a point to add a layering tank underneath, just to ensure a little extra insulation (for when they crank up the AC at work!).
I'm curious -- how do you guys dress for this in between season we're in? Any closet staples you rely on? Would love to hear -- let me know in the comments below!

This weekend was one for the books. We managed to fit in a whole day of wine tasting and general romping around in Napa for my friend Heather's birthday, a beach bonfire (which was a first for me!), Easter dinner with family and friends and this epic sunset off Highway 1. It's easy to get caught up in the day to day, week over week, but weekends like this one remind me just how incredibly thankful I am for everything I have in my life.
As for this dress? Well I have to say I can definitely get behind this whole 90s slip dress trend going on. Especially with a slouchy cardigan shrugged ever so slightly off your shoulders. Speaking of, this cardigan from Everlane (which is quickly becoming my go to for all my basics) has pretty much been my weekend layer MVP as of late. Shop a few of my other favorite slip dress and cardigan combos right here...

As part of my New Year's resolutions, I really want to make a conscious effort to disconnect more this year and try to find a better work, life, and yes, even social media balance. What I'm finding is that a little bit of routine (and a lot of self control) goes a long way. Lately, I've been making myself stick to a late Sunday afternoon regimen -- and it's relatively simple actually. I'll head out to Crissy field or Fort Funston for a little beach time with Elvis, usually with a good book or magazine and catch the sunset.
As trivial as it may sound, sometimes you have to remind yourself that you don't need to check your email for a few hours -- the world will (and definitely does!) keep spinning. What I love about disconnecting on Sundays in particular is that it's extremely easy to just "get a jump start" on the week ahead on Sunday afternoons (which my guy affectionately calls my 'Sunday blues'), that you end up short changing yourself valuable down time. In general, I feel far more refreshed and ready to tackle my week after I take just those few hours for myself.
While this is somewhat of a departure from my typical style (too demure just doesn't work on me), I have to admit, this dress stopped me in my tracks when I spotted it at Saks. In the sale section. Yes. In the sale section. My first assumption was that it was misplaced and that I should keep walking. Until I saw the redline price (with an additional 30% off on top of that for just the weekend). And before I knew it, I was trying it on and telling my life story to the sales associate.
It's my first (and likely only for now) Dior piece, and if you read my thoughts on the classics here, you know I've been looking to streamline my wardrobe as of late, only buying pieces that truly excite me and have staying power. What drew me initially to this dress was the color (perfect for spring weddings and Easter gatherings coming up), but what hooked me was the subtle architecture of it -- essentially classic, turned slightly on its head. It's a staple spring dress that still makes a statement.
As far as it being too demure? Well that's not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes, it's fun to channel your inner ladies who brunch but I can also picture this working well with a leather jacket and strappy heels. Uptown meets downtown.
What pieces in your wardrobe really excite you? Would love to hear!
I don't know about you, but this weekend is a welcome sight (especially after tackling my taxes earlier this week)! At first, I was a bit disappointed I wouldn't be trekking down for Coachella but I'm actually really looking forward to spending a few days relaxing at home, getting caught up on some reading and heading out for a few day hikes around Marin.
This is another dress I scooped up in Australia earlier last year and have been itching to wear for one of our first warmer days of the season. The back is just too good, right?
And in the spirit of spring weather, let's celebrate the season together! Join me at the Emporio Armani store (1 Grant Avenue) tonight for a little shopping and styling fun! We'll be hanging out from 6:30 to 8:30, sipping cocktails, listening to some tunes and trying on far too many pairs of shoes (I have my eye on this pair). Make sure to RSVP to emporioarmani@luckymag.com -- hope to see you there!
The last (and certainly not uneventful) leg of our journey brought us to Vegas -- for all of 12 hours. And apparently, you can accomplish quite a bit in 12 hours, namely: 1.) acquire a lovely hangover 2.) play far too many slots and 3.) eat your own weight in carbs.
All in all, I'd say it was a pretty successful trip! Just joining now? You can catch part 1 here and part 2 here.
Perhaps it's the Nevadan in me, but something about the desert will always feel like home. It could be the dry heat, or the clear, star-filled night skies but really, I think it's the blazing pink and orange sunsets that linger for a good half hour after the sun has slipped away that just get me every time. August sunsets were always the best, too. Literally, the sky would look as if it had set itself on fire, burning into the night. While I love my city by the bay, I certainly have a soft spot for the open desert. It's desolate and majestic, all at the same time.
And I couldn't think of a better way to describe the Grand Canyon: desolate and majestic, austere and yet so regal. All formed by a river! Millions of years ago! Lately, I've been all about trying to keep things in perspective, which I think is an easy thing to say and a much harder thing to do -- but standing out on a jagged vista ledge here at the Grand Canyon did just that for me.

I absolutely love road trips. The open highway. Windows rolled down. Best friends in the back seat and your favorite songs blasting. Growing up in Nevada, our summers never truly started until road trips were in full swing. We'd pack up the car for Fourth of Julys at Lake Tahoe, spring breaks down in San Diego and unmentionable debauchery in Las Vegas (it stays there after all!) and relished every mile of it. Truth be told, it's one of the biggest reasons I love the west coast so much -- our open, sprawling highways that lend themselves so well to, for lack of a better word, drifting.
As I mentioned last week, a few of my closest girlfriends and I packed up our trusty steed and headed into the great southwest to do just that -- drift -- with our eyes set on the Grand Canyon. As someone who runs a pretty manic work schedule, I can't tell you how excited I was to have my main decisions for a few days revolve around: 1.) when we should refill the gas tank 2.) where we should pull off to watch the sunset and 3.) what mom & pop diners we should stop off at to eat...

A bucket list moment for all four of us: staying at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. Trust me when I say, we didn't want to leave!
Although it seems like forever ago now, this is one of the dresses I picked up while we were bouncing around New Zealand and Australia late last year. It's admittedly a very spring-time dress so I've been patiently, or rather impatiently, waiting for our temps to warm up a bit to debut it.
One of my resolutions for this upcoming year was to travel more. And while I definitely have my sights set on a few distant and foreign destinations for the coming months (more on those later!), I'm personally really excited to explore the States more than I ever have before.
As you're reading this, I'll already be driving south on the 101 with a few of my close girlfriends, Heather, Natalie and Alicia for a little girls' road trip to the Grand Canyon. If you're like me and grew up on the West Coast, your parents probably took you to the Grand Canyon at some point between the ages of 6-8. You know, just old enough to stay relatively calm during a long car ride but too young to really appreciate the view (and secretly wish you were at Disneyland instead).
I often get asked how I balance blogging and working full time. The short answer? I don't manage it very well. Between early morning wake up calls for meetings and long commute times in the evenings, fitting in outfit shots, editing photos and even managing to look semi-presentable (let alone photo-worthy), gets hard when you work full time. I'm probably preaching to the choir when I say this, but sleep is usually the first thing to go.
What's saved me over the years though (aside from lots of coffee), is: 1.) a patient boyfriend who doesn't mind taking outfit shots on the weekends and 2.) a go-to, no brainer routine. In our apartment, most mornings are pretty manic (read: we're both rushing around, checking email on our phones and making to-go breakfasts all while brushing our teeth usually). What gets me out the door on time? Short cuts. Let me explain...
When it comes to getting my outfit ready for most days, I tend to literally walk into my closet and grab the first thing that I get excited about. Sometimes it's a new piece (like this Isabel Marant jacket I scored from The RealReal) and sometimes it's an old favorite that the works wonders with a little blazer and heels. For work, more often than not, I'm usually in some combination of cropped skinny jeans, a silky or slouchy blouse, a statement jacket and nude heels. It's put together but still comfortable for my more casual work environment.
I always wash my hair in the evenings, never in the mornings. For gals with thick hair, you feel my pain. Drying time = a major time suck and generally, my hair will look super frizzy if I blow dry it and try to curl it without letting it relax first. Plus, washing it the night before and sleeping on it gives me a little extra wave (I like to call it bedhead wave) which cuts my curl time down. These days, I've been all about wrapping my hair around my curling iron instead of clamping -- more to come on this soon. I'm working on a tutorial now. In general though, I will do my hair first, before my makeup, to give it a bit of time to settle and relax.
Lots and lots of hairspray and finger combing.
As for makeup, for those of you who tuned in last week, I shared my recent beauty favorites here. What I constantly look for my makeup routine are products that last me throughout the day and require minimal to no touch ups. Since I'm often away from my apartment for close to 12 hours on any given work day, it's important to me to have lasting beauty staples that keep me feeling fresh-faced and natural-looking all day. I've introduced TEMPTU to you guys before (remember this video?) and am officially now hooked on not only how easy it is to apply (2-3 minutes max for foundation, blush and highlighter) but how flawless it looks, even after multiple meetings, presentations and a couple of shuttle rides. It goes the extra mile and stays put and I couldn't ask for more.
Practice makes perfect!
As for accessories, I'm getting my routine pretty fine tuned here as well. Gold rings. Gold necklaces and a few gold bracelets. Have I mentioned I like gold jewelry? 😉 And I'm out the door! What does your morning routine look like?
Har details: Conair curling iron 1/2" and lots of TRESemme hairspray

Just a few snaps from our mini-getaway this past weekend. Who knew Elvis would love to paddle board so much?
And in the spirit of kicking off another weekend (albeit a few days early, but who's counting?), I'll be hosting a little spring collection launch at bebe this Thursday at Westfield Mall in San Francisco, from 6-8 pm. Hope to see you guys there!
Sometimes, all you need is a reset button. And the last few weeks have been non-stop to say the least. This past weekend, I escaped the city with my guy and pup for a quick retreat up at Lake Tahoe. Having practically grown up in the area, I fully realize now how much I took that place for granted (man, I miss it!). The fresh mountain air, early morning hikes, lake side reading and binge watching all the Oscar nominated films late into the night -- precisely what the doctor ordered.
I've stalked this dress pretty much from the moment I flipped through Katie Ermilio's Spring 2013 lookbook. So when it popped up on The RealReal brand new with tags, at about 75% off the retail asking price, I couldn't say no. Let's just say it was a birthday present to myself.
New York just has a magic way of bringing people together. And I love it.
Case in point: while in between shows at Lincoln Center, I ducked into a nearby Starbucks to 1.) search high and low for an outlet to charge my phone at and 2.) ease the frostbite. As I patiently waited with my fellow low-battery folks, I started chatting with a sweet girl about a new luxury shoe designer she was working with, Henri Lepore Dezert. Being the sucker that I am for shoes, I cleared my afternoon to check out the debut collection at the Viceroy Hotel nearby.
I'm so glad I did. The shoes, all Italian leather, made in Milan, are equal parts classic and fresh (something I find myself reaching for more often than my quirky, statement shoes to be honest). And Henri and his wife were a dream to hang out with for the afternoon. What was originally supposed to be a quick drop in turned into several hours of chatting over wine, admiring the view from the penthouse suite and swooning over beautiful shoes. I love unexpected and unplanned afternoons like that.
Huge thanks again to the Henri Lepore Dezert team for having this cold, weary traveler for the afternoon. I had a lovely time and am definitely your latest biggest fan.
My guy and I took advantage of our three day weekend and trekked out on a little day road trip down Highway 1 -- our sights set on Santa Cruz. After an exhausting, cold (but oh so worth it) trip to New York last week, I was more than happy to bask in some sweet California sun with two of my favorite guys and an epic playlist on repeat. We got lucky at one point because there was quite a large crash further up the road we were travelling on but my guy was keeping track on the Car accident news so he knew about it before we hit the traffic. We took a slight diversion to miss the traffic and the rest was smooth sailing. If I didn't know any better, I'd say Elvis was ready to stay in Santa Cruz -- he's quite the little surfer bum.
Even though this was one of my more casual outfits for fashion week, it was probably one of my favorites. This camel coat has made numerous appearances on the blog, but I think I love it best with a turtleneck. Slightly understated but the fur stole helps funk things up a bit.
I happened to wear this over the weekend for a light show schedule and serious wine-and-girlfriend catch up time once the snow settled in.
On an unrelated note, I'm thinking about putting together another hair tutorial (it's been a while since this one). What do you guys think?
Dress: Christopher Kane on major sale!; Jacket: Alexander McQueen (similar style here); Fur stole: Otte; Boots: Givenchy; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Celine; Lips: Stila "Beso"
I may or may not have stalked this dress obsessively until it went on sale. It's a little crazy (OK, velvet, neon florals and mesh scrunched sleeves? Yeah, a lot crazy). But....I love it.
Wore this for a handful of shows at Lincoln Center and, perhaps what I'm more excited about, the Broadway show "Commons of Pensacola" with SJP herself. It's arguably hard to see her as anyone aside from Carrie, but she's incredible on stage. As is Blythe Danner. Heather and I have made it our mini-tradition to always see a Broadway play when we're in town together, and I'm so glad we haven't missed a chance yet.
Jacket: Alexander McQueen (scored on MAJOR sale at Jeremy's, similar style here); Dress: Proenza Schouler (also on sale, similar style on sale here); Tights: Target; Shoes: Sigerson Morrison; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Celine; Necklaces: Jennifer Zeuner; Lips: Stila "Beso"
The past few days, I've been in the thick of NY Fashion Week madness. There's something about staying up super late to pack, flying in at an ungodly early hour (and surviving an interesting car ride in pouring rain to SFO) and hitting the ground running the minute I arrive, that I just love. I'm so incredibly grateful (and honestly blown away) by these opportunities. And, besides, a little concealer under the eyes goes a LONG way anyway, am I right?
I'm out here with my fashion partner in crime, Heather, snapping away on Instagram. You can follow along right here.
Currently en route to NYC and just the thought of bare legs is making me shiver. And yet, I'm still really looking forward to catching the West Village looking like this.
