tea time

2 minute read
Dress: Preen from earlier this season (but love this similar version from Asos here); Shoes: Steve Madden; Clutch: Olympia Le-Tan; Sunglasses: Celine
While I love donning the occasional shimmy worthy dress (see examples here and here), I always feel more like myself in something a bit more flared (and tea length). Sure, this may come at the groans/eye rolls of a few ex-boyfriends of mine, but hey, I like what I like. At the end of the day, that's all that really matters, anyway. 😉
I recently went to dinner with a few close girlfriends of mine (hey Helena, Alicia and Christine!) where we randomly started describing each other's signature style -- mainly because we were convincing Alicia that she really does have a killer one (have you seen her ankle boot collection?). When it came time for everyone to describe mine, I like to think they got it right, with it involving some sort of shoulder bearing midi length, full skirt dress and a killer heel. And the proof is in the pudding (here, here, and here).
Here are a few of my favorite tea length around the internet aisles these days:
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? As much as I love living further downtown in the West Village, there's a part of me that secretly wished I had opted for a spot wedged way uptown -- perhaps the Upper East Side -- mainly for one reason: hopping proximity over to Central Park. Lately, I've been making the C train trek whenever I have a free afternoon or when I'm craving a quiet evening. For long runs around the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis reservoir. For reading out on park benches. For watching old friends meet up and new loves start. For grabbing a hot dog and just wandering. Aimlessly. With a few good songs on repeat.

that new york cool

3 minute read
One of the things I love most about working on this little corner of the internet of mine, is the people that it brings into my life, from fellow content creators, stylists, up and coming designers and photographers. Just a few months back, Angie Silvy of Sterling Silvy (a digital content agency) reached out to me about a possible collaboration project with Levis. Being the huge Levis fan that I am (which you can read more about here), I jumped at the opportunity and let her know that I was eager to start.
Fast forward a few weeks, and Angie showed up at my door here in the West Village, camera gear in tow, ready to shoot around my neighborhood (yep, she's the agency founder AND principal photographer -- talk about a woman after my own heart). She's a pint size, surf beach blonde Aussie, and feisty as hell. Needless to say, we hit it off instantly. We started roaming my new neighborhood on one of those perfect May days looking for shoot locations and before long, I felt like I was just hanging out with a dear friend I hadn't seen in a long time. You can't deny when you have great working chemistry with someone -- bonus points when you're down to grab a few glasses of rose with them after work (which we promptly did).
Her vision for the shoot? Since I was the lone NYC based blogger for the campaign, she wanted both of my looks to exude that New York cool girl vibe, with extra emphasis on those italics. I swiftly told her that I hardly exuded that (at least not yet anyway) but that I would try my best. All I have to say is, sometimes it's amazing what a little ice blue Vespa and red lips can do for your cool girl factor

behind every great woman {ladies in levis}

3 minute read
Behind every great woman, is a great pair of jeans.

Like most kids growing up in smaller, suburban towns, back to school shopping meant everyone piling into the car during one of the hottest weekends at the end of August to go to the mall. And more specifically, especially between the grades of about 4th and 8th, we'd head to Miller's Outpost for jeans. (Whoa, throwback, does anyone else remember Miller's Outpost? I'm clearly dating myself here.)
Confession: Jean shopping was always my favorite (shoes were a close second). Personally, I think it boiled down to the display: a floor to ceiling wall full of denim upon denim, each stack slightly different from the last. Distressed. Dark wash. Light rinse. Boot cut. Flared. Straight leg. Relaxed. Skinny. Low rise. High rise. You get the picture. Lots of possibilities that almost begged the sartorial question, who do you want to be this year? And regardless of what jean phase was of the moment, I always came back to Levis.
For that reason, I've been a Levis gal for as long as I can remember. The fit, the durability, the price point have made them a mainstay in my denim rotation for years -- and I love how they've practically grown up with me (or perhaps it's the other way around?). Either way, when they asked me to be a part of their latest women's denim line launch, I practically jumped at the chance. (OK, more like I pinched myself and then jumped.)
We snapped these photos a few weeks back on one of those crisp, but still warm New York afternoons -- the kind that make you feel like anything could happen and in a way, that anything is usually staring at you right in the face. Like a wall full of possibilities, asking you how are you going to crush today?

And then you crush it.

42 things to buy now from the nordstrom anniversary sale {a procrastinator’s guide}

< 1 minute
By now (unless you've been shopping under a rock), you've seen numerous round ups on numerous blogs for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, going on now until August 3rd. And by now, you've probably already scoured most of it. And also by now, you're probably wondering if there's anything good left.
Well, let me tell you. There is! About 42 items to be exact.
True to form when it comes to sales, I jumped on board the minute early access was available for card holders. And then naturally got a bit overwhelmed and left my open browser tabs to gather dust for a few weeks. Now I'm back, doing the final sweep so you don't have to. Here are a few of my favorites still left on those proverbial sale racks. Please, no throwing elbows though, ladies!

Maybe it's this dress. Maybe it's the location for this shoot. Maybe it's my fascination with her as a style icon and all around inspirational woman/leader/activist. Either way, it just seems fitting to wish Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis a happy birthday on what would have been her 85th birthday (technically yesterday, but I'm sure she'd forgive us a day or two here).

Do I have any Nina Simone fans in the house?
(Raises hand.)
Perfect! Then perhaps you can relate to this as well -- something about this Jonanthan Simkhai number, when I shimmied into it last week, screamed Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" to me. The glove-like fit, the peplum, the cheeky netting cutouts -- I just couldn't help myself -- I had to walk around D.C. with that song blasting for a few blocks (and then some). And man, I have to say, there's nothing quite like having your own brass section kick in when you're walking (heck, can I say strutting in this instance?) down the street.
Does anyone else do this? Have mini soundtracks inspired by their day or perhaps something they're wearing in a particular moment?

As much as I harped on making sure to visit the monuments in D.C. at night, there's something special to be said about roaming around a new city early in the morning. Before the commuters start filling the streets, before your email notifications start to buzz, heck, maybe even before your coffee has kicked in. It's quiet, serene and you're left alone with your thoughts in a city you can truly see with fresh eyes.
Lately, I've been getting in the habit of going for early morning runs on my travels. I've found it's a great way to experience a city just as it's starting to wake up and stretch for the day. And for 30 minutes or so, you instantly belong, no questions asked, with a handful of locals (strangers to you really) running alongside you, all of them preparing for the day ahead. It then makes you wonder, if I lived here, what would my go-to route be? Where would I stop and stretch each morning? What coffee shop would be my ritual stop afterward? Who would be the guy I would secretly look forward to "bumping" into around mile 3?
It's like a sister life that you'll never really visit aside from little daydreams here and there. So...you keep running.

postcards from d.c.

6 minute read
Stay tuned for more of this outfit next week! Snapped by Laura Metzler
If you've been following along on Instagram and Snapchat, you've probably noticed I've been doing more than my fair share of traveling lately for work. Not that I'm complaining by any means, as it's been a great excuse to visit some of the cities that have been on my bucket list for sometime now (hello, Boston and Chicago!). And this past weekend was no exception, when I hopped on down to our nation's capital to play tourist for a few days.
While cruising around D.C., it struck me more than ever just how expansive this country really is and how little I've actually seen of it. Admittedly, I get the travel bug pretty often -- especially around this time of year -- but I typically have my sights set on other countries, tropical beaches or jumping out of airplanes on the other side of the world. All of which is nothing to bemoan or take for granted. And yet, when I was looking out over the reflection pool, with the Vietnam Memorial to my left and the Korean War Memorial to my right and Lincoln staring directly at my back, I felt so honored to call this country my home. Memorials that I had only seen photos and clips in movies of were suddenly giving me chills (in 95 degree weather no less!) and I quickly felt so small, in the most beautifully, humbling way. It was a great reminder of just how much majesty we have right here in our very own backyard.
As for the trip itself, I'm happy to report that my good friend, Meg, was such a trooper for hitting up all the main monuments with me (I say trooper mainly because the humidity we were dealing with was no laughing matter!). When prepping for the trip, I knew we were going to be covering a lot of ground by foot, so I opted to skip out on my regular Canon DSLR and instead rely on just a camera phone. Given that I have to be pretty well versed in both iOS and Android platforms for work, I was excited when the folks over at Asus asked me to try out their latest device, the ZenFone 2, which is said to have a killer camera and post-editing tools. I definitely wasn't disappointed. I put the zoom to test at the White House and the low-light enhancement nailed the perfect shot of Lincoln, which is said to be best at night (and I will attest to this -- definitely go at 11pm when it's less crowded).
Plus, I just loved how easy and nimble it made sightseeing and traveling around town in general. No fussing with a lot of manual settings or lugging around my neck -- just grab, point, shoot and on to the next.
So what did we do exactly? Read on for some trip highlights and tips for your own DC excursion!
Go See:
1. Definitely give yourself at least a full day to walk around the National Mall. You'll hit up all the main monuments pretty much at once (Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, White House, several different war memorials, Reflection Pool etc.) Plus the grounds are just breathtaking -- tree lined paths and fountains everywhere you turn.
2. Get tickets for a show at the Kennedy Center. Unfortunately, Meg and I weren't able to snag anything in time, but we did stop by after a run just to visit the building, which is absolutely beautiful inside and out.
3. Speaking of runs, head to the Potomac River running path in the early AM. Great way to start the day as the locals do!
4. Root the Nationals on! I'm a sucker for baseball though, so this was a given.
5. Opt for the Lincoln Memorial at night. It's less crowded and he's completely illuminated from below, which made for some stunning photos (scroll down to see mine).
6. Walk around Georgetown. So many charming, ivy covered homes and historic little churches everywhere you turn. Plus, the bakeries were incredibly tempting...
Go Eat & Drink:
1. POV rooftop bar at the W Hotel: You can pretty much see it all from here! The White House, the Washington Monument, the Reflection Pool! It doesn't hurt that they serve up a mean Moscow Mule either.
2. 2 Amys: This came highly recommended by both Meg and Naomi of Love Taza and I have to say, neither of these ladies were overselling it. Some of the best pizza I've had outside of Italy.
3. Baked and Wired: I fell for this place the minute I saw their custom "Elvis" cupcake (with peanut butter and banana). Thank you very much.
4. Barcelona: We popped into here right after 2 Amys and it made for the perfect night cap, out on their sidewalk patio.
5. Le Diplomate: This came highly recommended on Instagram (thank you again for all your recs by the way!). I loved the Parisian vibe but probably not as much as I loved their chocolate hazelnut tart dessert, which I'm still daydreaming about.
Go Stay:
1. The Jefferson Hotel: While I didn't stay here for my trip, we did host our work event here and I immediately fell in love with the decor. It's always a treat when such a historic building gets converted to a modern day boutique hotel, while still remaining true to a lot of the original character and history of the property. The Jefferson nails this impeccably.
2. St. Regis: It's hard to go wrong with a St. Regis anywhere, but I especially loved this location as it was so central to all of the monuments. It made sight seeing at night a breeze.

Reason #435671 I love black and white ensembles? It's just too damn easy to throw together when it's beyond sticky outside and you have a few evening engagements to head to. You may recall this crop top from my New Year's Eve outfit this past year (right this way) and this skirt from even further back (whoa, flashback to 2012!), and I'm honestly surprised it's taken me this long to pair the two together.
On a side note: I'm currently hopping around the east coast this week for work. First stop is Boston, which I'm afraid I don't have enough downtime to really go explore this time around, and the next stop is DC. If you have any recommendations for either city (restaurants! shops! museums!), I'd love to hear it! I'll likely be back a few times this summer, so your tips are greatly appreciated!

Back in February of this year, I stumbled upon this Self Portrait dress while window shopping around in Milan. Given that I was moving to New York soon after that trip, I did the responsible, adult thing and (gulp!) walked away from the dress. But not without trying it on a few times. And seriously regretting it ever since I walked away.
Fast forward several months now and that dress has been popping up everywhere (blogs, magazines, etc.), which of course, encouraged me to try to find it again. As luck would have it, my wild goose chase around the city last week left me empty handed as most stores were sold out in my size (just not meant to be!), but I did happen to fall in love with this particular dress, also by the same label. The full skirt, rich indigo blue color, sheer illusion detailing....well, it just feels very me.

And this time, I just couldn't walk away from it.

spoils of oils {biossance}

3 minute read
A few weeks back, I mentioned I was taking baby steps into the world of facial oils. As someone with naturally oily skin as it is, I have this predisposition to avoid excess oily products like the plague -- so my rational self found this to be quite counterintuitive. That is, until one of you guys actually left a comment on Instagram (House of Ginger, I'm looking at you!) that made me think otherwise. Net, net: oily skin produces excess oil because it senses you need it, so if you're beating it to the punch with an oil of your own (and one that's more plant based), it'll essentially keep everything in check. And if done right, you're left with a dewy, youthful glow (aka, what I like to call the 'Miranda Kerr effect'). Sign me up.
This is where Biossance comes in. I was recently introduced to Biossance by a close girlfriend (who also happens to be a facial oil fanatic) and was excited to try it out for myself when they approached me to partner together this summer. Routine thus far has included a few drops in the morning before I apply my makeup (I've been skipping my regular moisturizer) and a few drops on a very cleansed face before I go to bed. I've also been sneaking it around with me during the day, as it's been great to dab on extra dry patches of skin elsewhere, my cuticles if I can't make it in for a manicure and even for dry, frizzy hair flyways.
As a newbie to all of this, I've been sure to take serious notes as to changes in my skin tone, complexion and overall oil balance. Thus far, I'm happy to report the results have surpassed my expectations. Given that I recently just moved to a much more humid climate and my travel schedule has been nothing short of insane, my skin has been thrown out of whack, but I'm already starting to see a much more calm, even skin tone settling in, especially along my problem areas of my chin and patches along my upper neck. My skin feels hydrated but not overly weighed down or slicked over (which was one of my first concerns).
Where do you guys stand on the facial oil debate? And if you're a fan, have you tried Biossance already? Would love to hear your thoughts!

cat on a hot tin roof

3 minute read
Kimono: Vintage; Bathing suit top and bottom: Aldo; Towel: From Turkey; Bag: Aldo
If you've followed This Time Tomorrow for a while now, you probably already know I have a thing for rooftops. Take the first formative years of this blog for instance -- I practically shot all of my outfit photos up on the roof of my first apartment building in San Francisco.
What I always regret though is not taking advantage of said rooftop for it's lounging potential (but I also partially blame San Francisco's finicky weather for that, too). It's funny to think how often I went up there each day to snap photos and capture the view, but never thought to tote a bottle of wine or prepare a dinner for two up there. So you can imagine my delight when I found out my new building here in New York not only has a little courtyard out back (perfect for late night breaks with Elvis) but also a pretty decent rooftop spread, flanked by the Hudson and a pretty mean sunset on one side and the Empire State and Chrysler Building on the other.
Now that our temps are slowly rising, I've been making more of a point to pop up here with friends, a bottle of wine, a few good books and magazines and simply listen to the city buzz around us. It's quickly become my favorite escape these days, not to mention, a great excuse to stock up on a few new summery pieces, like this fringe bathing suit number and tribal-inspired bag from Aldo
Cheers to summer Fridays, am I right?
And to help kick off the season, Aldo is giving away a year's worth of accessories and handbags ($900 worth in value) -- simply upload a selfie of how you style your Aldo accessories on Instagram before June 28th. Here's how it works:

When I first wore this outfit a few weeks back for the long Memorial Day weekend, someone left a comment on Instagram saying that it reminded them of one of Holly Golightly's outfits in Breakfast at Tiffanys. If you recall, when she first meets her neighbor Paul, she's frantically getting dressed for her weekly visit out to Sing Sing -- first emerging half awake in an oversized men's shirt then later, in an elegant black tea-length dress and wide brim hat. Of course, they then look for her missing alligator shoe together, before she skips out to deliver the weekly "weather report" to a certain Sally Tomato.
I have to admit, while I'll always be a sucker for her opening scene in front of Tiffany's, I do love this particular sequence, especially when she out whistles George Peppard's character for a cab. Talk about a girl after my own heart.

i scream, you scream

3 minute read
Little known fact: one of my very first jobs (aside from the ones where you 'work at your parent's office answering phones but really do your homework' -- sorry, Dad), was at an ice cream shop.
During my first few summers of college in Reno, I'd throw on my all white uniform and apron and head over to Marble Slab, where I'd often be the only employee for the day, opening up shop, making ice cream batches myself and generally finding any and every excuse to text my friends to come visit me (usually involved me bribing them with scoops of birthday cake ice cream).
I'd make playlists each day to blast in the store, filled with the songs I thought were so incredibly cool and hip at the time -- and would wait for the next youth soccer team to come in and order far too many complicated scoop orders, most of which would end up on the tables and floor around the store.
And you know what? I loved that job.
Perhaps it was something about summer break: the promise of 6 hour work days, followed by long, warm evenings with friends and drive-in movies, only to be repeated the next day. Or perhaps it was the freedom that only your first real job can give you, that sense of purpose and duty, even if it just revolves around, well, ice cream. Or perhaps it's one of those appreciations that come long after the fact, because hindsight is funny like that.
Whatever it is, I always get slightly nostalgic when I go to ice cream parlors. Something about the blasted AC, the numerous finger and face prints from children on the glass case and the occasional couple strolling in, hand in hand, for a cute, late afternoon date -- it makes me want to just sit in the background and take it all in.
This, of course, gets me thinking. Is there something about my life currently that will make me nostalgic years from now? The answer is: of course there is. But it's hard to tell what that might be at the time, because that aforementioned hindsight can be a bitch. What I've recently tried to do though is be more aware of it -- taking small moments to appreciate the here and now, right now. Because someday, perhaps I'll be sitting in an ice cream parlor reflecting on it all (with two scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream, hopefully).

If you happened to have picked up a copy of "How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are" when it hit stands last summer, you may recall this little gem of a quote:
"Be thankful that you always wear nice lingerie -- you never know what might happen."

And I have to admit, as I get older and am in the process of really streamlining my wardrobe, I think there's a lot of truth to that, and not necessarily in the sense of being prepared for, well, perhaps the obvious portion of that statement. (Are we blushing yet?)
Instead, I think there's something undeniably sexy about sneaking in that extra layer of lace/mesh/silk under an outfit that can pack such a little confidence boost to the day, even if no other eyes than your own see it. Like a literal trick up your sleeve, so to speak, that only you know about.
If you've been following along on Instagram, you probably have noticed I've been all about peek-a-boo lace these days. Peeking out from under dresseslow cut tanks, you name it. Recent favorites include this bodysuit by Anine Bing (which I'm starting to realize can go under pretty much everything!) and these sets (here and here) by Agent Provocateur. They add just the right amount of spice for creating new, dainty necklines to old tops and now that we're in full on summer mode, they're the perfect companion to all the slightly sheer, breezy dresses we'll inevitably be reaching for once the temps spike up.
How about you guys? What lacy underpinnings are you craving these days?

five minutes / five years

"One belongs to New York instantly, one belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years." -- Tom Wolfe

I don't know what it is about this week, but something just seems to be clicking. Like I'm where I'm supposed to be, when I'm supposed to be there and for all the right reasons I both know, and don't know yet.
Blind clarity, perhaps? I'll take it.
A reader left a comment on yesterday's post mentioning that I seemed to be embracing the New York aesthetic well. It made me smile from ear to ear. Because I really am liking how New York looks and feels on me. It just fits. So thanks NYC. Admittedly, I was a bit nervous how the transition would go (all natural self-doubts I think) but I truly feel like I belong. And that's always a great feeling.

uptown/downtown

2 minute read
Top // Jacket // Pants: St. John; Bag: Chanel; Shoes: Manolo Blahnik; Sunglasses: Celine; Lips: Marc Jacobs "Oh Miley"
I love pieces that pack a little extra styling punch. Take this jacket from St. John for instance. At first glance, it has the prim and proper panache of a little boucle jacket, perfect for work and general uptown outings. But after looking a bit closer, you'll notice the general fit of it is much more downtown -- the moto cut and hardware edge it up just enough to take you well past the look of "ladies who brunch" and more like "ladies who power brunch and kick ass while doing it."
I wore this particular look to the office earlier last week, but can easily see myself styling each individual piece quite differently -- either with distressed jeans or perhaps the pants with a little off the shoulder top action for a more playful date night look.
You can see more photos of this look over on our shared Pinterest board by clicking here.

If you're like me, you likely have a few browser tabs open at all times for different pending purchases. Let's call this the consideration pile.
From there, you sit on them. Think about them. Debate them. Send the links to a few friends during lunch at work. And depending on how that series go, you might get one or two of them. Or nothing at all. And start over.
As someone who's an avid online shopper (and also happens to work for an online shopping service) I'm always looking for new sites that have the potential to disrupt the online shopping experience to try out for myself. On my radar lately? I was recently introduced to ShopYourWay.com and I've been dabbling in their personal shopper program, where you can earn points to put toward future purchases (much like frequent flier miles) as well as commission from all sales your followers/clients make. Available stores include the likes of Shopbop (which is where I grabbed this Rag & Bone hat from), Barneys and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Have you guys checked it out yet? For all new personal shoppers, they're offering $20 in points when your clients spend $20 or more in their first 30 days. You can learn more here.

round and round we go

2 minute read
These photos are another flashback to Memorial Day weekend (see the first installment here). Given that I was in the mood to explore a somewhat empty New York City, Lydia suggested we check out Jane's Carousel out in Brooklyn, which I had never been to before. It was one of those perfect, brisk afternoons, with families milling about everywhere, children's laughter lingering in the air as they rushed off to get ice cream and grab a seat on the horse of their choice. Oh, and then Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis walked by with their adorable little baby. So, all in all, you know, your typical New York afternoon. 😉

an afternoon at the palace {taylor stitch}

3 minute read
You might recall from this post a few months back, that I'm trying my hand at this whole hopping back and forth across the country thing. Between the flights, packing, unpacking, security lines and hitting rush hour traffic en route to JFK, I have to admit, it's proven to be more exhausting than I originally thought.
But I'll also admit, it's definitely worth it when I get to see warm, friendly faces upon arriving back in San Francisco and that familiar, potato patch fog-ridden skyline that I've come to love (and miss!). You might have spied on Instagram that I recently went back last week for a quick work visit -- which was then parlayed into an excuse to cruise up the Highway 1 coastline over the weekend. Before hopping out of town, I had a chance to catch up with the guys at Taylor Stitch to pick up a few oh-so-necessary pieces for the road trip, including this new striped gauze blouse which hit their workshop yesterday (get clicking right this way to pre-order yours now) and a little denim for good measure (more to come on that next week).
Of course, when Mike suggested shooting at the Palace of Fine Arts, I was more than game (ahem, clearly, I'm a sucker for that place). I just love how these shots remind me of certain afternoons of mine in that city by the bay: blanket and magazines in tow, a jacket tucked away in case the fog rolled in and perhaps an impromptu visit to Swensen's later in the afternoon for an ice cream pick-me-up.
So when the in-flight wifi is slower than dial up speed or I'm stuck in the middle seat again, I think I'll just remind myself of afternoons at the palace and smile to myself before ordering a glass of wine.
