I recently went out to grab coffee with a friend visiting from San Francisco (hey, Roya!) and she happened to pay me the biggest compliment ever. Like ever. To the point it practically made my day, no, week probably.
We were talking about our personal style, how it's evolved over the years and whose style we absolutely admired. Offhandedly, she mentioned that my style reminded her of a modern day Audrey Hepburn.
A few things happened next. First, I practically spit out my coffee, blushed and told her she was crazy. Meanwhile, my inner 13-year old self who was obsessed with Breakfast at Tiffany's (and still am to this day!), wanted to jump up and down and hug her. (Roya, remind me, I still owe you a hug the next time I see you!)
This rambling story is all to say, that I, like pretty much every other girl with Netflix access in middle school, have always admired Audrey Hepburn. I've read numerous biographies about her, have dressed up as Holly Golightly for Halloween more times than I can count and I may have gone on a wild goose chase throughout New York when I first moved to find Embryo Concepts, the book store where Jo Stockton works in Funny Face (sadly, it's a fictional store).
Above all though, and again, like most other girls my age, her style is what remains timeless for me, both sartorially speaking and her energy as a person. Graceful, elegant and always classic -- her poise seemed to exude far beyond just a character in a movie. It was her.
Where am I going with this? Well, I like to think whenever I'm donning a little evening attire (like these two Self Portrait numbers I recently picked up thanks to Luisa Via Roma) and hopping around the Upper East Side, I should swing by Tiffany's on my way back home. And give Sally Tomato the weather report. Oh, and of course, make sure to feed Cat.
While we're on the subject of evening attire, if you scoot over to Luisa Via Roma now, they're offering 15% off side-wide with the code SHOP15. Some exclusions apply (but those included, are goodies -- Valentino, Givenchy, Marant -- the gang's all here!). Run, don't walk; sale ends on 11/26.

a new york minute with mm.lafleur

Second outfit for afternoon meetings: Dress: MM.Fleur; Turtleneck: Ted Baker; Boots: Stuart Weitzman; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Celine; Bracelet: Miansai
Third outfit for evening drinks: Top: MM.LaFleur; Skirt: MM.LaFleur; Shoes: Manolo Blahnik; Clutch: Kate Spade; Jacket: Alexander McQueen; Sunglasses: Celine; Lips: Stila "Beso"; Necklace: Yvel
Raise your hand if you appreciate the following adjectives: classic, effortless, elegant and machine-washable.
If you're waving your arms at this point for any of the above, (especially the last one!), let's talk. Specifically about MM.LaFleur.
I was first introduced to the brand back when I lived in San Francisco, thanks to my girl Anh of 9 to 5 Chic. I loved every last piece on her -- each one more timeless and fuss-free than the last. So why didn't I pull the trigger then?
Not entirely sure. But I think it might have something to do with the fact I tend to not believe brands when they say something is machine-washable. Let's face it -- it's a marketing buzz word that gets thrown out there a little too liberally, much like "organic" or "gluten-free" when in reality, it's not 100% the truth.
I've gone down the "we promise it's machine-washable" road before only to have clothes pill, lose their shape and generally tear after one wash. I'll admit it. I'm jaded. And therefore, have stuck to their dry-clean only counterparts, which comes at a pricey tradeoff.
Naturally, when MM.LaFleur approached me earlier this season to partner together, I was curious to see how their pieces really stand the test. First of all, it goes without saying, their designs are right up my alley. Their lead designer, Miyako Nakamura, hails from design houses like Jason Wu and Zac Posen, so girlfriend knows a thing or two about elegant design. And believe you me, I enjoyed styling each and every piece, especially with fall now upon us.
But then it came time to wash.
While each piece has the option to dry clean, I opted to include them all (with the exception of the coat, because coats always make me nervous) with my hand wash load in the delicate cycle. And then I waited with bated breath.
Lo and behold, after each piece air dried, I was incredibly pleased with the shape and feel of the fabric afterward! Which means only one thing: I'm stocking up on more.
If you're new to the brand (like me) you can try them out via their Bento Box service. Here's how it works: fill out a quick style survey and their team will then personalize one gift box with a handful of hand selected items. Each piece you love, keep. Each piece you don't. Send it right back with the return labels they include.
That's it! Commitment free and none of that awkward avoiding of texts when you'd rather just not see the other person. No questions asked. Plus, if you order now with the code MMTOMORROW, you'll receive a free copy of their book Wear to Work with your order.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm throwing on my Gramercy coat to walk Elvis around the West Village (but perhaps we'll head over to Gramercy instead).
It's worth noting that not every piece from MM.LaFleur is machine-washable, although a majority of them are. Each item is labeled accordingly on their site though so you can easily double check!

tszuj it up {holiday style}

2 minute read
Dress: Tracy Reese via Nordstrom; Boots: Stuart Weitzman; Bag: Olympia Le-Tan; Sunglasses: Celine; Bracelet: Miansai

We've been chatting here and there about holiday dressing around these parts these days, and while I'll usually opt for something tea-length and full skirted, I've been pushing my boundaries lately. Or as Christine has been putting it, "SHOW SOME LEG, KRYSTAL."
OK, OK. Here's a leggy Tracy Reese dress that I recently picked up thanks to Nordstrom. Which I then promptly covered up with some come-hither-over-the-knee boots. Because. Well. I like to keep 'em guessing. If you ask me, there's something slightly more suggestive about a short mini dress, that covers pretty much all of your top half, arms, neckline and all, with the promise of a lot of leg, only to have a sliver peek out every now and then when you shimmy out of that cab.
I'm sure if we surveyed 10 guys right now....they'd probably disagree with me. But I probably won't be going out with those 10 dudes anyway. #TheirLoss
But perhaps that 11th dude will be reminded of Jane Birkin to which I'll gladly swipe right for.
How about you guys? Are you venturing into any turtleneck mini dresses this holiday season? Here are a few of my favorites that would look amazing with boots (or heels, if you wanna show some gams!).

upstate escape with garnet hill

3 minute read
You all have heard me romanticize the California coast numerous times. From wine country just north of San Francisco, to Monterey, Carmel, Santa Cruz...the list goes on and on, and it's one of the huge reasons why I love the west coast so much. The ease to which you can escape the city, with nothing more than a half tank of gas, some tunes and hopefully someone cute to take turns manning the wheel.
Of course, once I moved out to the east coast, I've been meaning to stretch my legs to see what upstate New York has to offer as far as city retreats. My list is pretty extensive at the moment. Catskills. Woodstock. Niagra Falls. But at the top? Hands down Hudson Valley. I remember chatting with Mike from Taylor Stitch during a recent shoot I did with the brand and he swore up and down that Hudson Valley was soon to be New York's next "Montauk." Take that as you will, but I knew I had to get myself there soon, before the rest of NYC decided to flock there.
As luck would have it, a few weeks back, the lovely folks at Garnet Hill had just the retreat I had been looking for planned, with the perfect amount of relaxation, exploration and appreciation for perhaps one of the gorgeous areas I've seen in the fall yet. I'm not exaggerating when I say, the colors blew me away. And don't get me started on our train ride out there. I'm a complete sucker for train rides.
Here's a little taste of our city retreat, including, but not limited to: local wine tasting, the most picture perfect countryside homes, s'more making and golden afternoon runs. I'm already trying to figure out when I can visit next...

10th street, eastbound

2 minute read
Dress: Stella McCartney (from a few seasons ago, similar style here); Boots: Givenchy; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Celine; Bracelet: Miansai
In the spirit of last week's post, I figured we were overdue for a little playlist around these parts -- one fitting for long walks around the city when you don't have anywhere in particular be. My favorite "just because" walk as of late has been down 10th street, heading east from the West Village. The fall colors and buildings are especially lovely right now as you head through Washington Square Park and into NYU territory and in a way I didn't realize was possible, it's making me fall even more in love with New York. Especially when I get to catch one of those sunsets that blaze the sky cotton candy pink as you face downtown.
If you can, try walking home from work today. See what you stumble upon. It might surprise you.

these boots were made for…

3 minute read
Shirt: Heidi Merrick; Jacket: ModCloth (old, dying for this similar style here); Jeans: Guess; Boots: Aldo; Bag: Olympia Le-Tan via The RealReal (they have this darling clutch available right now!); Sunglasses: Celine; Bracelet: Miansai; Scarf: Ribbon belt from an old shirt
I remember when I first moved to New York, everyone made a point to emphasize how much you walk around in the city. I didn't think much about it at the time -- I like to think that I'm a pretty active person (and will usually opt for the stairs instead of the escalator if given the choice -- go me!) -- and besides, why would you really walk that much when there's an extremely sufficient and fast public transportation system running beneath the city anyway?
After my first week here though, I got it.
I probably averaged at least a few miles each day, between work, meetings, evening events and everything in between. And then there's the fact that sometimes you would just prefer to walk regardless, especially when the weather is as perfect as it has been lately. The air is crisp, the city is bustling around you and around every corner, there's a pocket of the city that is in some way new and fresh, and constantly changing. Suddenly, just by stepping outside your door, you're part of a collective pulse -- you're feeding the city and the city is feeding you.
Whenever I have the chance, I'll try to give myself an extra 20 minutes to get somewhere, skip the subway and just walk. It's the best way to explore any city, but especially New York, and yes, that means I'm often the girl who's walking around, earbuds in, with a huge grin on her face for seemingly no reason. And you know what? I'm more than OK with that.
Of course, this means, the right kicks to hit the pavement are in order. Naturally, I've been accumulating my fair share of flats and low-heeled ankle boots the past few months, and this patent "Alicia" pair by ALDO has been my trusty companion as of late. Plus, as my good friend and seasoned New Yorker, Christine, pointed out, they'll make for a great rain boot option when the time comes.

You may recall this outfit from a few weeks back when I wore it for NYFW and since then, I've been waiting for the right moment to share these photos, namely for a few reasons. The first? Well, my costar here rocks a mean little leather jacket so I figured she needed a fitting debut (and all of our fall weather lately seemed quite apropos). The second? I had a chance to chat with the Kendra Scott jewelry team while at this shoot and since then have been test driving a lot of their daintier, gold pieces, mixing and matching with my current bauble rotation. The verdict? I'm a fan! Especially these ear jackets, which I'll occasionally rock on just one ear for an asymmetrical effect.
Here are a few of my other favorites from their current collection...may have to pull the trigger on some of these soon for the holiday lineup.

You can't quite tell in all these photos, but the neckline of this little white dress has pearls sprinkled all around it. I wouldn't say I'm much of a pearls gal (although I did pick up my first pair of pearl earrings while in Israel!), but I do love the idea of something so prim and proper paired with a leather jacket. I like to think Sandra Dee would be proud.
I first wore this dress last summer here -- for my 10 year high school reunion! Where as the past year gone? Side note, notice the hair growth -- getting longer!

2 minute read
Dress: Cynthia Rowley (borrowed); Shoes: Steve Madden; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Celine; Bracelet: Miansai; Necklace: Yvel; Belt: Asos
There's no season like holiday party season. And as much as I love the actual holidays themselves (which trust me, I do!), I think I might love stocking up on a few new dresses for the occasion a tad bit more. Of course, being here in New York for perhaps my favorite time of year also makes for a longer list of engagements: Broadway dates with girlfriends, taking my mom to see the American Ballet Theater company perform, dragging a date to see the Nutcracker perhaps. All of which require something fun to twirl in, right?
This time around, while you'll definitely still catch me in my usual go-to (a full-skirt midi dress like this Cynthia Rowley number), I'm stepping out of my comfort zone a bit more with a few body hugging pieces, largely thanks to the design geniuses at Self Portrait. I'll be sharing more over the next few weeks as parties and engagements pop up, but in the meantime, what are you thinking for your holiday dress lineup? Any favorites picked out?

9 to 5 style: 1 vest, 3 ways {with intermix}

3 minute read
First outfit: Vest: Intermix; Dress: Timo Weiland; Jeans: Frame; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Bag: Celine; Sunglasses: YSL; Bracelet: Miansai
Second outfit: Vest: Intermix; Dress: Marissa Webb; Boots: Stuart Weitzman; Scarf: Alexander McQueen; Bracelet: Miansai
Third outfit: Vest: Intermix; Top: Frame; Skirt: Marissa Webb; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Bag: Saint Laurent; Necklace: Aldo; Bracelet: Miansai
When it comes to my work wardrobe, I've never really subscribed to the idea that certain items are strictly meant for work, whiles others are meant for off-duty time. Granted, I've always worked in a creative environment, which means I've gotten to enjoy a relatively relaxed dress code -- and I like to think I've taken full advantage of this! Statement dresses and pieces take on all new meaning when you can see yourself kicking ass in a meeting and cutting loose with a few after hours cocktails in them -- without missing a beat.
So when Intermix asked me a little bit about a typical work day and how I dress to tackle it, I loved the idea of taking one piece (in this case, a beloved long vest, my pièce de résistance this season), and making it go the extra mile, from 9 to 5 to be exact.
8:30am: I start my day pretty early, with Elvis as my 6am alarm clock. After running a few miles, usually along the Hudson River Running Path, I love hopping over to a local coffee shop before the day officially kicks off to get some emails answered and the to-do list prioritized. And for those of you in NYC, check out Everyman Espresso and snag one of their waffles. Delicious little sugar rush for the morning rush.
1pm: My day is typically packed with meetings, some in person and a lot of them via video conference. Whenever possible though, I love meeting up in person and preferably out of the office to get some fresh air and change up my scenery. This particular day I stopped by the Nylon offices to meet with my blog management team at Socialyte.
6pm: I love the idea of mixing menswear with evening attire -- it feels almost like you borrowed your date's jacket or vest at the end of the night. Best part -- you don't have to give it back to anyone. The past few Thursdays and Fridays, I've been frequenting The Garret and Fedora (both in the West Village) for those late afternoon meetings that could easily pivot to happy (strategy) hour.

Main questions to ask:
Will I ever be able to afford a brownstone in the West Village?
What do you think of my date?
Trump doesn't stand a chance, right?
How many corgis do you see in my future?
What would you ask?

My idea of a perfect evening (date night or not) would entail the following right here in the West Village:
1. Pre-dinner drinks at Fedora on W. 4th Street.
2. Dinner at Cafe Cluny, just a few steps away on W. 4th Street.
3. Post-dinner, but pre-show drinks at Wallflower on 12th Street.
4. A jazz show at Village Vanguard on 7th Avenue.
5. Depending on the weather, a stroll down Bank and Waverly Streets (my favorite neighborhood corner).
6. Sitting on a random stoop on Bank Street (ideally with some Big Fat Gay Ice Cream in hand).
7. If there's no ice cream, then maybe a quick slice at Joe's Pizza on Carmine Street...
8. and then stroll back home...

sleep no more {and other nyc bucket list moments}

4 minute read
Dress: Self Portrait; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Clutch: Edie Parker (borrowed from McMullen); Bracelet: Miansai; Sunglasses: Celine
Little known fact: I love scary movies. Well. Scary anything, really. Haunted houses. Ghost hunter documentaries. Halloween. You name it, if it makes the hair on the back of my neck rise, then I'm all over it. In fact, I remember the first time I saw The Shining with a certain ex boyfriend. Once the ending credits started rolling, I remember all he wanted to do was watch a comedy to forget about Jack Nicholson's face. And all I wanted to do was look up where that exact hotel was located so I could visit it someday. (Side note: The Stanley Hotel in Colorado, the actual hotel that inspired the King novel, is opening a horror museum soon. Sign me up!)
Of course, as you can imagine, this has proven difficult with most of my past boyfriends who don't share my same appreciation. But hey, it usually means I grab onto you during the movie and bury my head into your shoulder, so let's pick our battles, shall we? 😉
Anyway, as you can also imagine, this means the minute I moved to New York, I've been itching to check out the Sleep No More performance at the McKittrick Hotel -- an interactive take on MacBeth that encourages you get lost roaming 5 floors of a dimly lit, eerie hotel. Actors run in and out of rooms, sometimes into you and past you, reenacting different tense scenes, while you, the audience, are mere bystanders (and sometimes participants), all wearing masks. I'd be amiss if I didn't mention a certain Gossip Girl episode tipped me off to this, as I'm sure it did for the rest of America, but I digress.
Much to my delight, I was able to sneak in an evening at the McKittrick Hotel a few weeks ago now and was beyond giddy the entire time -- even if I technically lost my date during it (it's easy to do, they purposefully split groups up). I decided to wear this new Self Portrait dress for the occasion as it felt like an appropriate moody nod to the evening's festivities, although granted, I'll probably opt for flats next time due to all the running up flights of stairs you do.
This, of course, has gotten me started on my other "Only in New York City" bucket list moments, most of which are luckily right around the corner. With there being so much to do here, like see New York City sights, I feel more determined to want to complete the goals on my bucket list. Might as well make the most of what this city has to offer.

So without further adieu...

1. Ice skating at Rockefeller Center and Central Park.
2. Spending an evening strolling past all of the holiday window displays at Bergdorfs, Barneys and Saks.
3. Catch a performance of the Nutcracker.
4. Camp out for a live taping of The Late Show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live.
5. Now that the Mets are in the World Series, I'm dying to see Game 3 here in town.
6. Sit court side at a Knicks game, next to Jay and B. Just kidding. I'm fine with cheap seats.
7. Save up for one of the helicopter tours of NYC. Ya know, also with Jay and B.
8. Dinner at Per Se -- yep, you guessed it. Also with Jay and B.
9. Carriage ride through Central Park when it's snowing.
10. Rent one of the row boats in Central Park (this one may have to wait for next summer).
For all my New Yorkers and New York aficionados alike, what's on your NYC bucket list? Do share!

If you've been following along on Instagram, you've probably noticed I've been quickly gearing up for fall (my first substantially real fall in over 5 years!) -- stocking up on the usual suspects like turtlenecks, long vests, tall boots and more than my fair share of felt hats. When it comes to styling everything together though, I'm excited to play more with proportions this time around -- the more unexpected the better.

Take these two outfits that I recently scooped up from the RACHEL Rachel Roy collection available at Macy's, for example. Under normal circumstances, I would totally rock this oversized, sleeveless turtleneck with a pair of skinny jeans, but I love how the slouchy pair of denim culottes give it a more off-duty look. And the long vest? It definitely could work with just about a lot of my outfits recently, but I think this flowy shirt dress adds an interesting softer dimension to the look -- adding the right amount of movement to an otherwise very structured look.
Here are a few other favorite pieces that could add a little extra dimension to your fall outfits, in case you're looking to mix things up a bit, too...

Much to the chagrin of several (ex) boyfriends, I've always had a soft spot for turtlenecks. So much so, that I even stock up on a few new ones each fall. The slouchier the better. If you've been following along on Instagram, you may have noticed me sporting them with skinny jeans and boots for an easy day of running around the city, like this outfit, but I love mixing up proportions by layering them over loose flowy dresses and skirts or even with a pair of cropped denim culottes (my new personal favorite combo). Are you a turtleneck aficionado? Great. Lots of them are coming your way -- outfit posts coming soon!

I, much like the rest of the blogosphere, have been completely enamored with all things Self-Portrait lately. So much so, that when it came time to plan my outfit for Monday's outing to Sleep No More, I couldn't help myself and snagged this little black dress. In all fairness though, I've been searching high and low for a unique LBD that toed the line between sexy and demure. I think this dress fits that bill quite nicely.
Of course, I have a handful of other favorites from the brand (gah, who am I kidding -- I have too many favorites to count). How about you guys? Have you been eyeing any of their dresses lately?

dorothy called

Jacket: Alexander McQueen (old, but obsessed with this similar style); Dress: Tanya Taylor (borrowed from McMullen Boutique in Oakland); Shoes: Valentino; Sunglasses: YSL; Bag: Chanel
While I may not live in the Bay Area anymore, I still love discovering local gems there -- it makes my visits back home that much more eventful if I get to revisit an old neighborhood and see how it's changed, how it's reinventing itself or what new spot everyone is lining up for brunch on Sunday.
My most recent discovery? It's actually a hop across the Bay Bridge over into Oakland: McMullen Boutique. I had the chance to meet shop owner (and accessory extraordinaire) Sherri McMullen when she and her team were out in New York for Fashion Week. She's just as lovely as I imagine her boutique to be -- filled with Tibi, Roksanda Ilincic, Edie Parker and soon Self Portrait -- and I know on my next visit out west, I'll be making many a pitstop in her neck of the woods. In the meantime, she was gracious enough to loan me a few pieces for NYFW, including this oh-so-sweet Tanya Taylor number that's sure to give Dorothy a run for her money.
For all my Bay Area readers, I hope you'll pop over to say hello to the ladies over at McMullen sometime soon!

new york firsts

Cape, turtleneck and pants: Ted Baker; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Celine
Given this is my first year here in New York, I'm racking up a lot of milestones. My first crazy cab driver experience (let's save that story for another day). My first (of many) celebrity sightings when they're out getting coffee (they're just like us!). My first concert at Radio City Music Hall (Hozier!). My first hurricane (not sure Joaquin really counts, but hey, it's something).
But perhaps my favorite of them all? My first fall. Like many of you, I'm sure, I'm a complete and utter hopeless romantic when it comes to fall. Something about the crispness of the air, the sudden bundling of bodies in swaths of layers, feels like something magical is always on the brink of happening. Just don't blink -- or you might miss it.
Naturally, this means shopping for fall also happens to be my favorite. So when Ted Baker asked me to share some of my fall favorites from their A/W collection, I couldn't add this checkered cape and turtleneck any faster to my cart. Now all I need is a great book to tuck under my arm before heading up to Central Park for the afternoon. Or in the case of this past weekend, an umbrella as well.
Also...psttt...Ted Baker is having a 25% off sale right now, site-wide. Just use the code: TEDS25 at checkout. You're welcome. 😉

beauty edit {desert essentials}

3 minute read
As much as I love New York, I also love being on the move. Give me a week off, a large departure board at JFK and I'll figure out the rest while I'm en route to my final destination via some albeit quite slow on-board wifi.

I guess my life lately has been a slew of flights, security lines, checked bags and noise canceling headphones. And I'm not complaining, it's been a lot of fun -- some for work and some for pleasure (more to come on our Utah road trip soon -- for now, these photos snapped at Horseshoe Bend will have to do!). Of course, this means, I've gotten some pretty decent practice at whittling down just the essentials -- which makes packing up on a whim relatively painless.
So what gets packed first? My beauty bag. There's nothing that scares me more than arriving at my final destination and having to hunt around for the nearest drugstore to pick up odds and ends I forgot. Since I like to streamline as much as possible, I keep my makeup pretty minimal (read: BB cream, some bronzer, mascara, eyeliner and an eyebrow pencil) with a few makeup removing tools that do some heavy lifting.
I was recently introduced to Simple Skincare by a girlfriend of mine (honestly, where would we be without our girlfriends?) and have been trying out their micellar wipes and cleansing water as part of my evening routine while on the road. As someone with pretty sensitive skin (especially when recycled airplane air seems to take a toll on me each time), I've been really impressed with how gentle and hydrating both have been -- while still doing the trick and getting all my makeup off.
The wipes especially have been my go-to for inflight pick me ups -- I'll usually throw them in my carry on and bust them out once we land so I can look somewhat alive (and human-like) at baggage claim. Or if you're on the road, like Lydia and I were for about a week, it's a great way to give your skin a much-needed-pick-me-up after being behind the wheel for several hours at a time (convertible air will take a toll on you!).

london calling {thakoon for designation at kohl’s}

Third outfit: Top and skirt: Kohl's; Shoes: Manolo Blahnik; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses Celine; Bracelets: Vita Fede

I love when my favorite designers team up with a department store powerhouse -- the results usually end up in a fury of online stalking on multiple devices. And if the size gods smile down upon you, you can usually walk away with a decent update to you wardrobe, with lots of pieces to mix and match.
You all know I'm a sucker for Thakoon (ahem, this post last week should prove it). So this collaboration is sartorial music to my ears. Each piece oozes with Thakoon's effortless cool factor at a fraction of the price. And with fall already in full swing here in New York, I'm excited to start layering all these new pieces (especially that plaid vest, which feels very Amal Clooney, no?).
Have you scooped anything from the Thakoon for DesigNation at Kohl's collection? Do share!

26.2 miles

3 minute read
Bra: Old Navy: Pants: Old Navy; Sweater: Eddie Bauer; Shoes: Nike; Sunglasses: Karen Walker
Let's shift gears a bit today and talk about fitness.
Since moving to New York, it's been a huge goal for me to get back into a regular fitness routine (I even put it on my 30 before 30 list right here). And if you met me in elementary, middle or high school, this really wouldn't come as a surprise. I've always been on a sports team of some sort. Soccer. Basketball. Volleyball. Softball. Heck, I may have even played on my high school's golf team for a season (for the record, I was and still am awful).
Nothing quite fit like running though. I did track throughout high school and while I prided myself in the short distance sprints, it wasn't until I started doing longer distances in college that I really hit my stride (pun intended). It wasn't necessarily just about the cardio for me (even though that's a great added bonus) -- I mainly love the head space it gives me. Give me an early morning when no one else is out, a scenic several mile route, a great playlist and I could run for hours, just thinking about work, problems I'm trying to solve and any goals that I've been mulling over/contemplating.
Unfortunately, as I get older (and therefore busier), it gets harder and harder to block dedicated time for things like that. But if the past recent months have taught me anything, it's not impossible! If you follow me on Snapchat, you may have noticed I've been getting my butt out pretty regularly, either to the Hudson River running path or even up to the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis reservoir up in Central Park to bust out 3 or more miles. I find that it's a great way to see your own city and if you catch New York at those early morning hours, it can be pretty darn magical with no one else in your way.
And if you happen to follow me over on Instagram, you may have noticed that as of last week, fresh off the heels of our Utah road trip, I signed up for a marathon in Paris, taking place in April. I technically ran my first marathon back in 2006 in Vegas, and despite my better judgement, ignored any core and muscle training and solely focused on cardio training. I finished the race (right around 4 hours or so), but my body was an absolute mess afterward. Muscles and joints that hadn't been properly introduced or prepped for the occasion ached and quite honestly, bothered me for months afterward.
This time around, I'm taking a slightly different approach. Focusing on this running plan and partnering with Equinox and their personal trainers to help with the strength training and overall body toning (hello arms!).
Over the next few months, I'll be sharing my progress, both mileage wise and strength-wise here on the blog, and I do hope you'll follow along (and heck, maybe even join me?). And it all starts TODAY!

goody two-shoes {louise et cie}

Full disclosure: If you're like me and live in New York, (or perhaps you do this when you visit New York), your recall of certain places around the city usually revolve around scenes from TV shows or movies. After all, it's hard to avoid. Even Wikipedia attempted at an exhaustive list of all movies filmed and set here in NYC, only to remark that it's very likely an incomplete list.

I've found this makes for a fun bar game -- seeing who can correctly place a certain TV show scene with different spots around the city. For example: The sushi restaurant where Samantha throws a drink in Richard's face? Sushi Samba on 7th! The theater where Joey performs in an Off Broadway show circa season 3? Lucille Lortel on Christopher Street! And of course, you can't pass the Met steps without hearing Blair Waldorf in your head, asking you to sit a few steps below her.

This, naturally, leads to iconic fashion moments as well. Carrie's dress that blows up over her head while in front of the Guggenheim Museum. Serena's opening credits outfit in a cognac leather jacket and striped shirt while standing in Grand Central Station. Oh, and let's not Seinfeld's puffy shirt that he wears on The Today Show (or perhaps we would like to forget it?).

My point to all of this? I like to think these two outfits pay a slight homage to Blair, a tipping of the proverbial headband, if you will. Because at the end of the day, there's something about wearing something so prim and proper (like these chic little flats and bow pumps by Louise et Cie), that gives you that certain Queen B attitude. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to hop around the Upper East Side today.

i’ll have what she’s having {fall musings}

2 minute read
All of the above? #FallGoals. And perhaps unsurprisingly, I'm carrying a few trends over from summer that I'm just not ready to part ways with, those namely being:
1. The neckscarf. Can't stop. Won't stop. Sorry. I love the idea of it tucked ever so neatly into the top of a chunky turtleneck.
2. Culottes. These were such a huge hit for Fashion Month that I'm sure the editor pack won't be packing these away anytime soon -- just swap out your silk and linen pairs for more denim and wool options for the cooler months ahead.
3. Avant-garde layering. I don't know about you, but I've noticed a lot of gals sporting little short sleeve t-shirts under breezy dresses, which I think is an excellent way to transition all of your sleeveless frocks into fall -- just add an oxford shirt underneath or perhaps a second dress (or top) over it for something a bit more sculptural.
What are you craving for fall? Any summer trends you refuse to let go of that might be making the cut?
