blogger meet up anyone?

2 minute read

There's nothing really special about this outfit. I just like the jacket. And the shirt. And that's all I have to say.

On that insightful note, I noticed that Erin of Calivintage posted about a blogger meet up for Nov. 22 in the Bay Area (which I'm going to try to make!) and it got me thinking: Are any of you lovelies from northern Nevada and would be interested in a NN blogger meet up? Just a crazy idea. Not sure how many fashion/style bloggers there are in my area, but I know you exist. And since you exist, would you be interested in setting something up?

Shoot me an e-mail sometime soon (krystalbick@yahoo.com) and let's chat about getting it together!

deck the halls

< 1 minute

Yup. Another productive day at work. Outfit post later today, so stay tuned. I just had to post this Christmas tree dress in the meantime. Not comfortable for general moving around (or breathing for that matter) but looks darling, right? Can never be too early to get in the spirit, I always say.

Dress: Handmade by my editor and staff set designer from actual Christmas tree branches and ornaments
Tights: Fishnet tights, Target
Shoes: Red heels, Junkee Clothing Exchange

I told you so

< 1 minute

Well. You have been warned. I've been itching to wear a bow tie since seeing "Coco Avant Chanel" and while I look no where near as adorable as Audrey Tautou, I'm still pleased with the end result. Except for the part when I took off my blazer and my boyfriend told me I looked like a waitress. That part I was not pleased with. Ahem. Ian.

But today is said boyfriend's birthday, so I'll let it slide. Just this once.

Blazer: Tweed and leather blazer, Charlotte Ronson for JCPenny
Shirt: Ruffle button down blouse, thrifted, originally from J. Crew
Skirt: Black velvet mini skirt, H&M
Bow tie: OK, not really a bow tie, just a bow from Walmart that I pinned on
Shoes: Black heels, Aldo

some loot

2 minute read

Alright, folks. Here's some of the loot I scored the other day while thrifting. (Isn't that belt with the little chain darling?!) And as alluded to in yesterday's post, I'm still running on pretty high inspiration levels, which I will use to the best of my abilities today for another quick (and hopefully cheap!) shopping trip.

Wish me luck, guys.

Also, I have to apologize for my horrible hair lately. Getting the bangs trimmed tomorrow so no more headband/bun combo!

Dress: Grey ruffle dress, thrifted

today’s to-do list

< 1 minute

Today I did the following:

  • Slept in until 1 p.m., which feels glorious and much deserved after spending about a week of working from 9 a.m. until 1 a.m. EVERYDAY.
  • Took a nice long shower and actually got sorta gussied up, again much deserved after spending a week in "I-don't-care-what-I-look-like-mode."
  • Went shopping. YES. Feeling better already.
  • Met a fellow blogger (Second Skin) while thrift shopping. So nice meeting you today by the way! Let's make thrifting dates!
  • Finally set up my rolling rack and organized the former pile of clothes on my floor. Totally inspired about putting together an outfit tomorrow morning.
  • Speaking of inspiration, I saw "Coco Avant Chanel" yesterday and cannot wait to start finding ways to incorporate little bow ties, straw hats and cropped men's trousers into the daily rotation.
  • Speaking of Coco Chanel, I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO SPEAK FRENCH. ASAP.

And what better way to do that than the following:

Yup. Paris Vogue and cookies. Yum and yum. Happy Sunday everyone!

Happy Friday the 13th everyone. Hope you're all staying warm, steering clear of ladders, black cats, broken mirrors, 13-month old babies, cracks in the sidewalk, full moons.

You get the picture.

as seen on TV

< 1 minute

I feel like it was only a few days ago that I was complaining about how ungodly hot it was. Now, I'm forced to wear all layers possible at work. Including that throw blanket on the couch. I've been eyeing it all morning and decided that someone in the name of fashion will forgive me for wearing a glorified Snuggie.

On a side note, I was on the news today. Yep. Breaking news at 5 o' clock about the magazine. While I wasn't interviewed, they did a dramatic pan in shot of me typing away on my Mac. Oh so serious. Or perhaps I was just sleep deprived. Hopefully it looked like the former.

meh-day

< 1 minute

Well another month, another deadline. Sorry guys. Posts are going to be pretty sporadic and so are my sleep patterns. Here's what I wore up to Lake Tahoe the other day for a quick interview. Simple. Leather. Big chunky scarf.

Pretty comfy.

Now it's time for another pot of coffee. Happy week all.

stripes and suspenders

< 1 minute

Apologies for my absence lately. It's been pretty busy at work the past week (just wrapped a big photo shoot yesterday, whew!) and now my body is paying for it, i.e. I'm sick. In efforts to feel better, I thought I would post an old outfit from a couple weekends ago that I never got the chance to photograph.

Now of course, I'm going to lie back down and feel sorry for my sick self. Happy Friday everyone!

Reno Style

2 minute read

(Well this is going to be one random post, so reader, be warned.)

While I love setting my clock back an hour to sleep more in the mornings, it's not exactly conducive to my picture taking in the evenings. (Read: No sunlight at 5 p.m., wtf?) So without further ado, I'm going to have to substitute my daily style photo with a little unveiling of the premiere issue of the magazine I work for, Reno Style.

Above are a few snippets of my favorite spreads (designed by the lovely Ms. Sadie Bonnette) and shot by some pretty darn talented people. Ahem Gene Russell, Ciprian Cojoc and Franz Szony.

(Our cover model is Editor in Chief, Jessica Schneider, working it in a vintage sequin flapper dress. Lovely, right?!)

As for my role, I'm currently the assistant editor overseeing much of our editorial lineup and lead stylist, coordinating fashion spreads, styling models and directing the shoots. In a nutshell, I'm Grace Coddington, on a much smaller budget, smaller readership, with only a fraction of her talent and dark hair, duh.

Once the link to our Web site goes live, you lovelies will be the first to know.

And as for the photo booth pictures below, there's no such thing as too much zombie Edie Sedgwick and Joaquin Phoenix.

Halloween x2

< 1 minute

Well here in Nevada, Halloween is a three-day weekend. Yep. You heard right. Someone back in 1864 thought it would be a good day to take a chunk of land and call it Nevada. Naturally, this has made for some interesting, three-costume weekends. Unfortunately, yours truly, was only feeling up to two. I blame a little something that rhymes with "balcohol."

But enough about that.

One night I was Anna Wintour, as promised, with a September issue and red pen in hand (to make the story copy bleed red!) and the other night I was a zombie Edie Sedgwick for a local Zombie Pub Crawl. Luckily, I had Andy by my side.

As for the third photo in the photo booth, Joaquin Phoenix showed up. He was kind of a jerk and stuck gum under the seat.

Hope everyone had a great Halloween!

sequin!

< 1 minute

Think I'm going to drag the boyfriend to see "This Is It" tonight. I mean, what else could you wear besides sequins to something like that?

That's what I thought.

As for the outfit itself, I was pretty proud of myself when this jumped out of my closet. That is until I realized that it was a blatant copy of a post on Le Blog de Betty. Am I just losing my creative juices or is this the product of over-blogging stimulus?

You be the judge.

Question: How do fashion bloggers survive the elements? I just about lost all my fingers taking these photos due to extreme cold winds and sporadic snow flurries. Which believe you me, makes it very hard to type afterward.

That said, I'm going to direct you elsewhere. Somewhere where people have warmer hands than I, thereby allowing them to type somewhat coherently.

And that place is We Were Damsels, as they did a very nice feature on me! Thanks again girls!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to stuff my face with soup.

DIY: shoulder pad fringe!

2 minute read

As is the case with all of my DIY posts, as long as there is glue, scissors and minimal sewing involved, I'm cool with it. This project was no different.

Lazy? Maybe I am.

I originally got this idea from Ms. Arabelle of Fashion Pirates, when she was sporting a similar t-shirt at the New York City Weardrobe conference. Then I also spotted it on Andy of Style Scrapbook. Enough was enough. I had to make my own.

Well two shoulder pads (from an old blazer), some fringe ribbon (purchased at Wal-Mart), some glue and sewing later, I had my bold shoulder buddies.

Now go get your own. Carry on.

velvet-ita

1 minute

Mmm…there's something about velvet that makes you want to snuggle it all day. Today was one of those days, although it was admittedly too hot for this outfit come noon. Luckily, the cut off shorts off set that a bit.

In other news, after reading through some comments from the previous post, someone tipped me off as to how American Apparel has their own archive of submitted Halloween costumes. Gold mine! I eventually figured mine out (which shall remain a secret for now) but the American Apparel ad and Bjork costumes were close runner ups.

And for the gents, will someone please don the "Dick in a Box?" And send me a photo afterward.

eggplant and mint green

< 1 minute

Some naysayers might call this a "hospital room" color palette (ahem, boyfriend) but to that I say, balderdash!

I picked up these trousers at H&M over the weekend and love the faded eggplant color of them, not to mention the tapered leg that has been popping up everywhere. I can't wait to wear these puppies with my over-the-knee boots or ankle boots.

And of course, you all know I love this vintage Christian Dior shirt of mine.

Almost Friday. And almost time for me to get my act into gear and pick a Halloween costume. Any suggestions? What are you guys going to be?

black and white and re(a)d all over

< 1 minute

Two things: One, yes, you're right. This Alexander Wang-esque braid isn't courtesy of my own hair. I just didn't have the heart to cut the cheapo extension that I had so I rocked the unbelievably long hair with pride today. Two, yep, I copied Ms. Liz over at Late Afternoon. I just loved her take on a Parisian stroll outfit that I had to try it out for myself.

And three, I'm starved. Happy Wednesday!

After picking up this tweed suit jacket over the weekend, I've been scheming up ways to channel my inner Chanel (har har) ala Lily Allen in their latest ad campaign. Luckily, I dug up this thrifted treasure at work today (a ruffle collar button down from J. Crew) and sported the wannabe Chanel purse that I scored over the summer.

Oh and I tried my darndest to not rip these tights today. Proud of me?

Apologies for no post yesterday. When Dennis Hof happens to stop by your office for a TV interview, you tend to stop what you're doing, follow the crowd and head to the nearest bar after work.

Which is what I did.

Yep.

So here's two outfits to make up for it. Forgive me? Can we still be friends? Please?

First outfit-

P.S. Go check out how the folks at Weardrobe actually let me write something for them! Scary, I know!

weekend repeat outfit

2 minute read

Since this was a deadline weekend and I'm horrible at packing for multiple days in advance (actually, I usually just don't take the time to remember to pack) I literally lived in this outfit. Yes, if you must know, I smell now.

On the same note, sorry for the crazy absence. Proof reading, re-proof reading, writing, designing and generally losing your mind over a magazine is time consuming work. So today, I rest. And try to regain my sanity, of course.

the artsy type

2 minute read

Hey all. Apologies for the sporadic posts lately. We're approaching deadline time here at work and things are getting hectic. And by hectic I mean I'm preparing to sleep less than a couple hours a night before this coming Monday.

Enough whining out of me, though. Today's outfit was so comfortable, like a painter's smock. The flow of the cardigan and the gem tones of the top underneath made me feel, well creative. I suppose that's a very uncreative way to express myself but you get the picture. I felt like picking up a paintbrush, tying my hair back and throwing buckets of paint at a wall.

Instead, I had to settle for sitting in front of a computer and taking a quick road trip with the boss for around town errands. En route, I picked up this AWESOME leopard print faux fur jacket that I have been coveting on everyone else's blogs lately. I think I might be living in it this coming winter. GLAM.

Cardigan: Dark grey cardigan, Urban Outfitters

brrrrrr….

2 minute read

Somehow the weather gods overseeing the northwestern part of Nevada have decided to entirely skip the season the fall, making great headway for winter. Therefore, these photos are a product of me looking out the window at cloudy skies and shivering at the prospect of stepping one over-the-knee sock covered foot outside.

In fact, this entire outfit was literally too skimpy to wear today. So skimpy, that I left for part of the morning to run and find some socks to cover my legs. Oh, fickle weather. Where did all the 65-70 degree days run off to?

As for these shoes, I'm a bit uncertain as to how I feel about them with this outfit. The inner let's-wear-black-shoes-with-everything side of me screams I should have grabbed my Aldo wedges this morning. But then there's this little voice that secretly wanted to wear these tan peep toe boots just for the sake of wearing them. What do you guys think? Does the color of them throw off the outfit?

lbd in the house

2 minute read

LBD. Little Black Dress. No girl should be without one. Somehow, this particular girl has far too many to count, a story that shall be saved for later. This dress, another goodie courtesy of the Weardrobe Conference, is from ModCloth, the challenge being, of course, how many different ways the LBD can be styled. I've been checking out the other ladies over the week to see what they have come up with and am convinced that the LBD never gets old. I've seen tights, different prints, belts, vests, blazers, the list goes on and on and each time, it looks refreshing and new.

For mine, I went a bit old school and wanted to glam it up with this vintage fur wrap. As my muse, I had this picture of Maggie Gyllenhaal stuck in my head, with a belted fur wrap over a black dress, looking very 1940s chic. Of course, the weather turned pretty cold on us here and fancy dinner with the boyfriend turned into watching "Mad Men" in bed. But at least I got guisssed up for a little bit.

Dress: Little black dress, called the Weardrobe Dress, ModCloth
Wrap: Vintage fur wrap

dapper flapper

2 minute read

Hey all. The shoot last night went extremely well. Lots of girls running around in flapper dresses, sequin headbands and champagne glasses in hand as the boys sort of, well, chased them around. I can't wait to share the photos with all with you. All in good time, all in good time.

On that note, I think I must have caught the flapper fever because I just couldn't help myself this morning when throwing on this fringe tank tank from Urban Outfitters. It gets tangled on pretty much everything in my path and those within a 12 inch radius of me, but ah, who cares?

Happy Friday, everyone!

P.S. Please excuse the horrible run in my tights. I accidentally ripped it right before these photos were taken. Ah, thank goodness for the weekend.

Blazer: Black tuxedo blazer, Express
Tank: Flapper fringe tank, Urban Outfitters
Shorts: Jean cut-offs, Abercrombie & Fitch
Boots: Ankle boots, Aldo
Tights: Black sheer tights, Target, run courtesy of me!
