Threw this together for an impromptu date night this past weekend. When in doubt (and in a bit of a time crunch with the man friend waiting downstairs in a loading zone) I always turn to black and white combinations. Never fails to deliver a certain "film noir" feel to any evening look.
What's your fool-proof date night outfit?

Been having a lot of fun the past few days playing tourist in SF while my mom is in town visiting -- which of course gives me the perfect excuse to line up new restaurants to try out and hidden boutiques to hunt down. It's like being new in town, all over again! As always, you can follow along with me on Instagram right here.
But enough about me -- how was your weekend?!

Stopping by my favorite San Francisco boutiques today for some much-needed window shopping. Top of the list: Elizabeth Charles on Fillmore, Luna Boutique on Sacramento Street and finally going to Mira Mira on 22nd in the Mission. Fellow SF shoppers, anywhere I should definitely stop by today? Tips always welcome! Feel free to tweet me while I'm out and about (@krystalbick).

After seeing Blair pair her striped jacket with a polka dot dress (which you may recall here) -- I knew I wanted to try my hand at it myself as the combination is just too tempting. Plus, throwing in a little red/white/blue reference for today certainly doesn't hurt either!
Happy Fourth of July everyone -- hope you enjoy an especially relaxing day off!
Dress: Topshop (lusting over this black and white version); Shoes: Moschino; Sunglasses: Karen Walker; Jewelry: Gorjana "Super Star" necklace c/o
When I started packing for last weekend's jaunt to Lake Tahoe, this was the first dress I grabbed. There's just something about it that begs me to wear it near the water's edge, much like I did a few months ago for this shoot.
Any big plans for the Fourth this year? I think the man friend and I are going to stay local here in SF -- maybe try to make a day trip out to Napa. Either way, looking forward to some afternoon road trips singing along to oldies and catching up on some reading (finally finished the 50 Shades saga -- now in the middle of reading this series).

When it comes to dressing up for dinner and drinks over the summer, I love pairing seemingly basic pieces with some of my more polished items -- just to turn things upside down a bit. This T Shirt, with it's sheer paneling and longer asymmetrical cut, lent itself nicely to a fitted peplum hem skirt. Unexpected but still effortless and laid back (with a side of statement heels, of course).

No beach-bound round up would be complete without some nautical stripes -- and I'm pretty smitten with the baby blue on this version! With a swipe of red lipstick, some broken in cutoffs and canvas sneakers, it's hard not to channel your inner Bardot in this getup.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather we've been experiencing here in SF, I knew I wanted to spend a majority of this past weekend over in the man friend's neighborhood (to take full advantage of the 5 minute walk to the beach). That said, weekend packing isn't exactly my forte (let's just say I almost always bring too much with me) so I wanted to make sure to pare down to just a few basics -- hence a lot of T Shirts.
Of course, it's easy to underestimate a good T, which is why I'm so excited to be sharing some of my favorite StyleMint pieces over the next few days to help dispel that notion. The fit and the fabric quality of these Ts never disappoint and the fact every piece is designed by Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen certainly doesn't hurt either. But I digress.
The first look in our beach-bound lineup? A breezy little T Shirt dress, perfect as my bathing suit coverup for the afternoon! I went with some of my summer go-tos to accessorize this look (hello denim jacket and straw panama hat!) but I'd love to know how you would style this number! Let me know in the comments below.

I posted about this darling drop waist dress in a recent "Currently Craving" installment -- and craved it so much that I had to have it! And I'm glad that I did -- it's proving to be quite the summer soiree hit. This particular time, I wore it out for a night of drinks and dancing with these new to me crystal-embellished Celine heels I scooped up a few months back.
How was your weekend? Any fun excuses to wear your summer-ready frocks?

Still not over my silk pajama for daywear kick and was inspired to throw this number together after rediscovering this old pin of mine of Zanna Roberts Rassi. It's the perfect no-fuss kind of outfit that I'll be repeating more than I should admit to this summer. For inquiring minds, the answer is no, unfortunately, I couldn't find a matching top but believe you me, I would have scooped it up in a heartbeat! (Much to the likely chagrin of my boyfriend.)

A glance back through the past few weeks -- looks like summer has arrived early in SF! That means reading up in Alamo Square, sunny baseball games and strolling around Golden Gate Park without too many layers!
How's your summer shaping up so far? Any big plans?

As you may recall from some whisperings on Twitter a couple of months ago, I had the pleasure of working with Benefit Cosmetics for their new Ultra Plush lip gloss launch, which officially hit stores yesterday! Since then, I've been dying to share the video with you guys as it was beyond fun to shoot (I mean, we got to snack on ice cream in between every shot!). And, of course, I'm so glad I got to share it alongside my lovely friends Whitney and Chandamheer -- hope you enjoy it as well!
Valentino studded wedge, via Farfetch, $596
Oh, how the sales this time of year tempt me! These studded beauties above are no exception and have been camping out in their own browser tab the past few days, sandwiched between work tabs of course. While I'll probably sit this pair out (still secretly wishing that their kitten heel counterpart will be going on sale) I like to visit them just the same -- online window shopping, if you will.

I'd be lying if I said my heart didn't skip a beat or two when I received this gorgeous Givenchy bag, on loan from the Santa Barbara based boutique dressed. And since I'm never one to turn down a good old fashion style challenge, I decided to let the bag take center stage, opting for a clean, white on white look. Of course, I can already imagine it pairing great with purple and green gem tones so I can't wait to see how these lovely ladies style it in the coming weeks! Stay tuned!

Drop Waist Dress from Topshop, $84
I don't know what it is exactly about this dress -- perhaps the bold red color or the fact it has the most darling dropped waist frill -- but I just can't wait to wear it out for summer drinks and dinners. Perfect with a great pair of dangly statement earrings and strappy heels, no?
On an unrelated note, thanks for all the kind words and feedback about yesterday's hair tutorial post! I'm so glad it was helpful and I'll definitely have to consider incorporating more daily routine tutorials in the future. A beauty routine, perhaps? Yay or nay?
For the past few months or so since cutting my hair short, I've received numerous emails from you guys asking just how I style my curly waves. Being a relatively bone-straight hair girl myself, I've always been inclined to wear my hair with some type of curl in it, be it beachy waves or more defined spirals. We always want what we don't have, right?
That said though, I hardly consider myself much of a hair guru and in fact, I'm pretty darn lost when it comes to styling anything that takes more than 30 minutes in the morning (hanging head in shame). So hopefully, what follows is easy enough to replicate and adapt for yourself and your hair type.
As for my hair type? The "before" photo you see above is what my hair looks like with little to no styling done to it. Since my hair is very thick, I generally wash my hair in the evenings, drying it before I go to bed. This allows it time to relax, making it much easier to manage in the morning!
So without further ado...
1.) Before beginning, I'd like to note that I mentally divide my hair into three sections: left, right and the (dreaded) back section. I say "mentally" only because, while I've tried sectioning my hair with hair clips, I've found that I like sorting curled sections and non-curled sections apart by hand as it helps relax the curl and in the end, makes it look more natural. I suggest trying both ways and see what works best for you and what you're most comfortable with.
With that in mind, I take a 3/4" inch curling iron (I use this one by Conair) and start on my left side, with the top layers and face framing layers first, then make my way to the layers underneath. Since cutting my hair shorter, I've had to get used to taking much smaller chunks of hair to curl at a time. My general rule of thumb is to keep each section you curl right around the width of a pencil for top layers and a bit larger for bottom layers (about the width of a marker).
When curling, I always make sure to leave a small portion of hair (about 1/4") outside the curling iron's clamp and I curl toward the back of my head. I repeat this until I've curled much of the left side of my head. (Leave the back portion alone for now.)
2.) Now I comb through my curls with my fingers, making sure to separate them a bit. I don't spritz hair spray just yet though -- we'll save that for later.
3.) and 4.) At this point, I repeat what I did on the left side to the right side, making sure to still curl toward the back of my head. Which brings me to the aforementioned back of the head. This section kills me every time but luckily, since we're going for a more relaxed overall wave, it doesn't need to be perfect. Just try to keep the same size sections as you were on the right and left sides and you'll be surprised at how quickly you eventually get the hang of it (I promise!).
Once I think I've covered all my bases, I usually enlist the help of the man friend to check the back (important to make sure that whoever you ask is actually looking and not checking their iPad or some other distraction instead).
After this, I leave the curling iron plugged in, do another round of finger combing and go about my morning. Since I like to let the curls fall and relax naturally, I find that the best time to spritz hair spray is right before I leave, about 15 -20 minutes after I've finished curling. Sometimes, I'll do a few last minute touch ups and re-curl the top layers if I want more definition, otherwise, I'm ready to head out the door!
