natural edit {what’s on my nightstand}

3 minute read
It's funny how packing up your life into boxes makes you really evaluate the sheer amount of stuff you can accumulate. Case in point? My closet took me close to a full weekend to really dig through and sort. A lot of folding, boxing up, rediscovering pieces I thought were lost forever and cringing at a few that had managed to stick around for that long. It's been incredibly therapeutic in a sense to just cleanse -- pare down to exactly what I need and want in my life and part with the things I don't.
My beauty shelf is really no different. I wouldn't say I'm necessarily a product junkie at heart but somehow, I've managed to fill a few overflowing shelves in my bathroom, precariously stacked and arranged with creams, foundations, powders, lipsticks and probably one too many brushes than I know what to do with -- a lot of them I love, a lot of them are samples I've yet to try. So naturally, when I tackled those shelves this weekend, I realized how very few products I really reach for on a regular basis -- the ones where I wouldn't be able to start my day without -- one of which is a great skin cream. As I get older, I'm starting to realize how much emphasis I put on routine, especially when it comes to something as foundational as skin care. There are so many products available that can help you with your skin health, and you can even read reviews online to find the best ones that suit you. A friend of mine showed me these beverly hills md deep wrinkle filler reviews when I was shopping around for cream to help with the lines that started appearing. I realized that I enjoy looking back on changes to my routine. I'm much more diligent about drinking lots of water than my former 20-something year old self, I apply a nightly eye cream (because those late night email catch up sessions are definitely catching up with me) and I don't dare leave the house without a base layer of SPF lotion on (Baz was right all along)
I recently read about Voucelle and was intrigued by the stem cell activation of it -- to essentially encourage cell turnover -- for firmer, more resilient skin. I wouldn't say anti-aging steps are something I'm actively looking into, but sometimes the best preventative care is taken well before you need it so I was excited when the folks at Voucelle asked me to test drive it. I've been applying the serum nightly (after drinking a full bottle of water to boot) and have been really happy with the results so far, especially around and near my eyes, which tend to be slightly puffy in the morning.
Have you guys tried it? Would love to hear what your thoughts!

I suppose a better title for this post would be: "I left my stomach in San Francisco" because, if I'm being completely honest, I'm going to miss our food scene here in SF dearly! Naturally, New York has plenty of tempting menus to keep me busy, but after spending five years here in San Francisco, I have to say, this isn't an easy goodbye for me. And don't get me started on the apparent lack of good Mexican food out east. Sigh.
Here are a few of my favorites (new and old) that I've accumulated over the years accompanied with the dish you MUST try while there.
Park Tavern: Must try dish - This is a tie for me between the brussel sprout chips and the Marlowe burger. Get both. You'll thank me later.
Wayfare Tavern: Must try dish - It's hard to chose a favorite (Tyler Florence can really do no wrong) but I'd have to say the fried chicken wins me over, every goddamn time.
Flour + Water: Must try dish - Their bianco verde pizza (asparagus, ricotta, garlic and salsa verde) is always a table pleaser. But I rarely share with the table. 🙂
SPQR: Must try dish - Their menu changes pretty often, but I recently had their nettle and mushroom cannelloni with nettle fonduta and piave cheese and was not disappointed.
Elite Cafe: Must try dish - Don't leave without getting a big order of their meetinghouse biscuits and make sure to try seafood gumbo!
Absinthe: Must try dish - Where to start? For appetizers, don't miss the soft garlic pretzels (these guys will forever haunt my dreams) and for an entree, their potato crusted salmon is some of the best salmon I've ever had.
A16: Must try dish - All of their pasta dishes are sure to please, but their bucatini dish with walnut-lemon pesto, cream and wild arugula is my fool-proof choice.
Marlowe: Must try dish - Three words for you: roasted bone marrow.
The  Cavalier: Must try dish - If you're going with a few friends, I highly recommend getting both the wild mushroom pie and the rabbit and shelling bean pie to split.
Boulevard: Must try dish - I've only gone here once and it was for a birthday celebration years ago, but the nettle tortellini with veal meatballs is still one of my favorite dishes this city has to offer.
State Bird Provisions: Must try dish - Everything. It's dim sum style and it's kinda hard to turn ANYTHING down as it's passing you.
Nopa: Must try dish - I'm not usually a fan of pork chops, but there's something about the country pork chop from Nopa that just gets me.

left my heart in san francisco {an ode to california + taylor stitch}

First outfit: Dress: Eva dress available for preorder from Taylor Stitch; Jean jacket: Old Navy; Boots: Isabel Marant; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Bag: Asos (love this style here); Watch: Daniel Wellington; Necklace: Jennifer Zeuner
Second outfit: Camel coat: Zara (old, similar style here); Boots: Celine; Bag: Proenza Schouler; Necklace: Jennifer Zeuner; Lips: Marc Jacobs "Oh Miley"
When I made my big NYC move announcement a few weeks back, I realized I never really clarified what exactly I'd be doing for work out there. I'm beyond happy to report I'll be staying at Google, working on my same team (marketing for Google Express), but simply transferring offices, from Mountain View to our Chelsea Market location. My new apartment (in the West Village!) is about a 10 minute walk from the office, meaning I'll be getting back about 4 hours of my day, which I currently spend commuting between San Francisco and Silicon Valley. To say I'm ecstatic about this shift in work/life balance, would be an understatement and I'm looking forward to putting that new found time to work -- both here on the blog and, oh I dunno, working out a bit more often. 😉
But it should be said, most of my team is still based on the West Coast, meaning I'll be back pretty often (read: about once a month) for work off sites and brainstorm sessions. While it may sound a bit exhausting, I'm actually really excited to try out this whole bicoastal thing -- especially when it comes down to visiting friends and a certain special guy out here in San Francisco. It also means, I don't have to say goodbye to California, just yet. And trust me -- I don't want to say goodbye to her! There's so much she and I have left to do together. Yosemite! Joshua Tree! Big Sur! And so many more road trips up and down Highway 1!
It's with that in mind that I've been playing around with the idea of creating an ongoing series here on the blog about my visits over the coming months -- a diary of sorts about our reunions -- an ode to the wild child, free-spirited, fiercely untamed nature that is California.
Enter Taylor Stitch (another reason I will definitely miss the West Coast). If there's a brand that truly embodies the California spirit, it's these guys. I was first introduced to the brand a few years back when my good friend, Kim, a designer at Banana Republic, mentioned a pop-up collaboration they were doing with these three dudes, all East Coast transplants, who were onto something, making high quality, classic, yet rugged staples that are meant to be lived in. Fast forward a few years, and they've got quite the cult following here in San Francisco, with one shop on Valencia, and another on Chestnut -- and a lot of loyal California men (and women) sporting their staples all over the city.
Personally, I love how each of their pieces carries a certain sensibility to it -- you can tell it was intentionally made with it's wearer in mind. Comfortable and yet tailored -- I can easily wear their pieces from morning walks with Elvis, to drinks in the evening, which let's face it, that's what we're all about in California.
So you can imagine my delight when they reached out to do a little shoot together around their Eva dress (which I'm wearing above, available for pre-order here). We roamed around my neighborhood, including Alta Plaza Park (a frequent stomping ground for Elvis and I) and up and down Fillmore Street (my favorite block for window shopping). I love how these pictures capture exactly how I'll remember my San Francisco afternoons -- carefree and meant for exploring. And I have a feeling, for future California adventures, I'll be reaching for more of their staples.
Thanks Taylor Stitch for a great afternoon!

left my heart in san francisco {favorite coffee shops}

4 minute read
Dress: Eva dress from Taylor Stitch; Coat: Zara (old, similar style here); Boots: Celine; Bag: Proenza Schouler; Necklace: Jennifer Zeuner (now on sale!)
Snapped at Jane on Fillmore // Stay tuned for the full outfit post tomorrow!
As I mentioned last week, San Franciscans are pretty serious about coffee. To the point, I may or may not have seen roast preferences listed quite often as a profile snippet on several dating apps (ahem, guilty former Tinder user now hangs her head in partial shame).
And rightfully so! We have some great local roasts right here in the Bay Area, and an even better lineup of coffee shops to serve them at. While I don't have much time during the week to set up shop in some of my favorite cafe haunts, I do love spending Sunday afternoons catching up on email, editing photos and generally gearing up for the week over a cappuccino. It's a weekly ritual that adds the right punctuation to the start of the week for me. Often, I'll get out my coffee maker in the kitchen and brew myself the perfect cup of coffee. I love feeling like a barista and I recommend that everyone should give coffee-making from home a go - it's fun and can save you money otherwise spent at swanky coffee shops. Check out the full moon cafe reviews of some of the top pour-over coffee makers on the market right now.
There are lots of things that I'm looking for in a good coffee shop. I want that cosy feeling, with a nice and calm atmosphere. It can't be too busy, but also not silent - the right amount of background noise is important. Friendly staff and a good point of sale (POS) system so that there are no big queues are also big musts. If you aren't familiar with POS systems, you can find them online - you will have almost definitely used one before. And last but by no means least, amazing coffee... obviously! So with those things in mind, in no particular order, here are a few of my favorites around San Francisco.
Jane: Perhaps my most frequently visited cafe, Jane is not only killing it in their brew department (hello, Stumpton coffee) but their cafe decor is responsible for far too many Instagram moments. If I wasn't such a massive fan of coffee, I'd still probably be in this cafe, just because of how it looks. I know a few people who work in coffee shops and they like to inform me of any new imports that they have and sometimes allow me to try some new flavours before anyone else. I didn't really see the importance of knowing the behind the scene stuff until I was recommended to look into a site like www.ironandfire.co.uk. From then on, I think about coffee as more than something I enjoy. I also take into consideration the fact that without suppliers, many people like me would be without coffee. I don't know what my life would be like otherwise. But let's not forget the cookies. Don't get me started on their "Accident Cookie." It's also where Mike snapped this photo of Elvis and me the other day -- stay tuned for the full outfit post tomorrow!
The Mill: This is another great spot known for their decor: airy with minimalistic, natural touches. But what I love the most about The Mill is the fact they don't have outlet plugs or wifi, which in San Francisco, is practically blasphemy, but in some instances, it's nice to be reminded to unplug and actually, I dunno, talk to that cute guy in line.
Saint Frank: But let's be real. We all need to get a little work done (even that cute guy in line), especially with a sharp jolt of caffeine pumping through us. Saint Frank was actually recently named one of the 21 best new coffee shops in America, and I have to say, while it sounds a little pretentious, I full-heartedly agree. Lots of open seating space with skylights above, great for work sessions and people watching, with plenty of Ritual roast on tap.
Ritual Coffee Roasters: Speaking of Ritual Coffee, I'd be amiss if I left this guy off the list, mainly because it was such a mainstay in my life when I lived in Hayes Valley. If you live in San Francisco, you're no stranger to pop-up container shops. The beautiful thing about Ritual Coffee Roasters' container shop (aside from their delicious roasts, of course)? The fact that they share a container with Smitten Ice Cream. The possibilities there -- endless.
Blue Bottle: Blue Bottle admittedly has multiple locations scattered throughout the city, but their spot tucked away in Potrero Hill is probably the best kept secret. There's hardly ever a line and you can pop over to Heath Ceramics afterward for some retail therapy.
Dynamo Donut & Coffee: UM, obviously.
Philz: Another no brainer -- mint mojito iced coffee, anyone?
Four Barrel: Another spot that doesn't have outlet plugs or wifi, Four Barrel's spot on Valencia can get a little packed at times, but it's worth the wait. Plus, they offer some pretty awesome in-house brewing workshops and classes (check out their lineup here).
Sightglass: They have a one-size cup fits all policy, but trust me, it packs some serious PUNCH.

It's officially go-time for the move out east! Movers have been booked, boxes are taking over my living room, my car has been donated and my closet is in shambles, as it's slowly making it's way into piles of "keep," "donate" and "sell." So really, I think it's only fair that I treat myself to one (or two) new items as consolation, right? Right?
In the meantime, I have a few San Francisco favorites to round up for you still -- including more restaurants, bars and coffee shops, with the first installment coming later this afternoon, so stay tuned!

left my heart in san francisco {date nights}

3 minute read

After spending five years in San Francisco, I have to say, I'm pretty fortunate to have had some amazing date nights in this city. Of course, the company is usually the highlight (OK, always the highlight, in case they're reading this), but there's something undeniably romantic about our hilly little town that can make the most unassuming Friday night memorable. Some of my favorites? Well, I never kiss and tell, but a great date night story is usually too good not to share a few details, right?
For dinner? Some favorites of mine include Park Tavern, Wayfare Tavern, SPQR, State Bird Provisions, Central Kitchen and The Cavalier. For cocktails? Wilson & Wilson, Absinthe, Top of the Mark, Palmer's and Trick Dog. For the hell of it? (Because let's face it, that's what makes the date memorable!) Cobb's Comedy Club, hiking up to Coit Tower (preferably late at night so you can see the city glowing from the top of the hill), hopping onto the California line cable car (also late at night), catching a showing of Beach Blanket Babylon, concerts at The Great American Music Hall and/or The Warfield and surfing out at Pacifica.
As for this date night outfit? My guy invited me to a gala over the weekend and I wanted to find a way to style this top I recently picked up at Intermix for the occasion. You may recall this skirt from my New Year's getup and I'm happy to report it's made several appearances in my more formal outfits lately, including this past weekend's events (which may or may not have been topped off at one of my favorites mentioned above -- Top of the Mark). I kept the rest of my look soft and feminine, with loose waves slipping out of a low ponytail and a subtly nude glossy lip, thanks to Rimmel London's new Stay Glossy line. (I don't know about you, but something about date night calls for a glossier lip, as opposed to lipstick -- much easier to kiss that way!). Lately, I've been opting for a nude lip and I love how this particular one has just right amount of sheen to it, so it feels fuss-free but still dynamic enough for a statement.
What are some of your favorite date night haunts?

left my heart in san francisco {grace cathedral}

3 minute read
Dress: Urban Outfitters; Jeans: DL1961; Boots: Stuart Weitzman; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Wallet: Emerson Fry; Watch: Daniel Wellington; Bracelet: Bauble Bar
Truth be told, the first time I visited Grace Cathedral was when my mom was in town visiting and we had ridden the California line cable car that runs right past the church square. It's a breathtaking building, situated at the top of Nob Hill, surrounded by some of San Francisco's finest: The Mark Hopkins Hotel, The Fairmont and of course, Huntington Park. And up until that point, I had always admired this pocket of the city, often coming up here at sunset to watch the city glow on all sides of the hill.
But, for some reason, I hadn't ventured inside the church, until that evening my mom begged me to go. As we rode past the cathedral, gripping to the cable car railing as we chugged along, she led the charge, bolting off (as soon as we stopped) and made her way straight to the church steps. I had no choice but to follow. It was late. Probably around 8pm and an evening service had long since finished, with just a few members of the staff milling about at that point, on their way out. They were nice enough to just let us in though and we grabbed two seats toward the middle. And just sat. And just listened. It's amazing how quiet and yet at the same time, how much you can hear in a church like that. The high ceiling acoustics carrying and amplifying the soft hum of the church, almost as if it's breathing along with you.
For those in the area, I highly recommend you stop by -- they have a whole lineup of non-denominational activities scheduled each month, including yoga classes and a silent movie night, where the church organ player accompanies the film.
I'm bidding adieu to San Francisco! See part 1 HERE, part 2 HERE, part 3 HERE and part 4 HERE. And stay tuned for next week, where I'll be sharing some of my favorite San Francisco haunts, including restaurants, coffee shops, bars and boutiques! Happy weekend!

Like good members of any big metropolitan city, us San Franciscans take our coffee pretty seriously. Almost to the point where you could liken it to a West Side Story rivalry -- we literally choose sides. Friendships can be forged because of it. Relationships can be ruined because of it. And while I'll save my roundup of favorite roasts and coffee shops for a later post (coming next week), I wanted to share this gem of mine, Cafe de la Presse, a little bistro + cafe nestled in the Union Square/downtown area.
 Granted, it can get pretty touristy in and around this area, but what I love the most about Cafe de la Presse is its ability to make you forget all about that. Their outdoor patio has the right amount of greenery and potted bushes around it to enclose the space and the ambiance inside is unbeatable. A large wrap around, alderwood bar, a magazine news stand flanking the back (loaded with lots of foreign magazine goodness), an entire staff whose accents lilt with that certain French je ne sais quoi, and loads of little dimly lit corners, perfect for tucking away and enjoying some close conversation over wine. It's a little bit of 1930s Paris, right there in Union Square. And I'm certainly going to miss it.

left my heart in san francisco {chinatown}

3 minute read

Chinatown is a great example of a neighborhood that I unfortunately don't make it to often. For a slew of reasons (traffic usually makes it tricky to get there or it's just way too packed with people), I usually opt to admire it from the gate entrance at Grant and Bush.
If I'm feeling up to the challenge though, I'll venture in on a Saturday afternoon to window shop at the many vendors that line the streets here. Knick knacks, porcelain galleries, tea shops, Chinese grocery markets, restaurants, there's a little bit of flair for everyone. And it's bustling to the brim with people! Families, tourists, moms and grandmothers shopping for dinner that evening, street performers, all pulsing in and out of the narrow alleyways and streets here, different languages heard buzzing and blending all together, with traffic at an almost standstill trying to get through the throngs -- there's an undeniable energy that immediately sweeps you up. And sometimes, that's part of the beauty of a place like that, right? Getting lost in the crowd and seeing where it takes you.
For these photos, my dear friend and (collaborator who I'm going to miss dearly!), Anna and I decided to head to Chinatown early in the morning, to capture it at it's most serene moments. Deserted and sleepy. I just love how darling the lanterns look, especially above the empty streets, almost as if we stumbled upon this scene after a big party had just ended the night before. And I, the lone party straggler, am just now deciding the evening has ended and it's time to head home.

Thanks for all the kind words about yesterday's post! I'm glad you guys are up for following along my memory lane of sorts through San Francisco. I'm finding it to be both a fitting tribute and also somewhat therapeutic (yep, I just admitted that), so it feels great to have you guys along for the ride.
When I first moved to the city, I was a stone's throw from the Golden Gate Park Panhandle, which is another stone's throw from the Conservatory of Flowers, nestled right at the entrance of the park. I remember one of the first times I rode my bike past the sprawling grounds here and being completely awe-struck. The rolling green hills, the thoughtfully laid out flower beds sprinkled around it and the stark elegance of a white greenhouse, nestled at the top of a hill. I've spent my fair share of weekends here, sprawled out with friends simply losing track of time, wishing the afternoon wouldn't end. And every time I go back, I find myself wanting to sprawl right back out, kick off my heels and get lost in a deliciously lazy afternoon.
If you're just joining now, you can see the first part of my San Francisco tribute right this way.

left my heart in san francisco {north beach}

It's been a bumpy past few weeks. But in the best way possible. Who knew packing up your life to go from one coast to another could be so, well, HUGE? Monumental? Scary? A tad overwhelming?
I suppose I did, but it's hitting me hard right now. The good news? A lease has been signed for an apartment in New York and I couldn't be more relieved (more on that to come soon, possibly a mini apartment tour!).
In the meantime, it's gotten me thinking a lot about this new chapter I'm about to start and how it doesn't quite feel right to start it, without properly bookending this current one. A proper San Francisco farewell, if you will. A lot has happened to me since moving here back in 2010 -- a new job at a start up, another new job at Google, two apartments in different neighborhoods, that beautiful hotel north beach, they all hold a special place in my heart, new friendships, new relationships, some heartache and a lot of good laughs. For that, I tip my hat to you San Francisco.
And in my best proverbial hat-tipping fashion, I've decided to dedicate a mini series over the next few weeks to some of my favorite San Francisco haunts -- some old and some new to me. I'm looking at it as a chance to say goodbye (for now) to some places that will always hold so many memories for me and also as a way to finally explore some places of this city that have still escaped me (until now, that is).
First up? This mini stretch of Columbus Street overlooking downtown, toward Kearny Street. Quintessential San Francisco -- with the Transamerica Building peaking in the background and bustling North Beach in the foreground. Some favorites are sprinkled here: Citylights Bookstore, Cafe Zoetrope and even Jack Kerouac Alley (who I should really thank for first igniting my love of San Francisco so many years ago with On the Road).
Every time I turn the corner from Broadway onto Columbus to catch this view of Sentinel Tower (the green, flatiron-looking building you see above here), I feel new to the city all over again.

This time of year has to be one of my favorite sweet spots of the season. Winter's just wrapping up, shedding it's last grip and spring starts to reveal itself in little ways. Longer days. Cherry blossoms peek out. And you suddenly start finding excuses to enjoy outdoor patio cafes and restaurants.
While San Francisco, admittedly, doesn't experience a true winter, there's a noticeable lift in the city's mood when the fog doesn't linger quite as long as it usually does -- and everyone heads outside. Parks are full, beer gardens open their doors and it's usually my cue to skip the Lyft or Uber ride and just walk everywhere I can. Especially now, given that I'll be packing up my life here on the West Coast pretty soon, I love these little moments to myself to just get lost, clear my head and tune out (with a fitting playlist on repeat, of course!).

Seems fitting that after yesterday's post about one of my favorite parks in New York, that I follow up with today's photos straight from Alamo Square in San Francisco. When I trekked to the city nearly 5 years ago, I moved into a little corner studio, with two sets of bay windows on the fifth floor, just a few blocks away from Alamo Square. And man, did I love that studio.
Most weekends I would spend walking up to this very park, blanket in tow, and plopping down to read magazines and books, while folks gather in front of the Full House house for photos. (I've since been told that the actual Full House house is not one of the Painted Ladies, but I kinda refuse to believe that -- I'd rather keep the magic alive!)
Granted, I currently don't live all that far from Alamo Square anymore and will often head there with Elvis when I have a chance so he can play with some of the other neighborhood dogs (mainly the pugs). But every time I come back, I'm hit with a mini wave of nostalgia that only this pocket of the city really gives me. Probably because so much of my formative, "I'm on my own" years were spent roaming around Hayes Valley and this very park -- sitting, thinking about work or whatever problems I was facing at the time, starting new friendships and relationships,and enjoying my new life in a city that excited (and still excites!) me.
Oh San Francisco, I truly will leave a part of my heart here.

Washington Square Park has to be one of my favorite parks in New York. Perhaps it's my deep seeded desire to have gone to NYU when I was younger or the throngs of people pulsing in and out of the park, playing chess or gathering around a public piano concert -- it just feels like one of those places where things happen. I love just sitting in the middle of places where things, big or small, just happen.
And with any luck, a few big things are happening around these parts, including the signing of a certain West Village apartment lease. I'm feeling overwhelmed, anxious and so incredibly grateful. Thanks again for the all the sweet words of support over the past few weeks. It means more to me than you know!

The past few weeks have been a blur of suitcases, packing and repacking, security lines, delayed flights and mini personal bottles of wine (as a nightcap on red eyes), that I decided a run down on my airport style is well overdue. Since traveling is such a central part of my life, both for work and for pleasure, I like to think I've perfected my in flight uniform, to something comfortable and easy to schlep in, but also still feels chic and put together, and well, like myself.
It goes a little something like this: skinny jeans with a forgiving amount of stretch to them (this Frame pair has been a god send as of late), these Dolce Vita ankle boots (that are easy to sprint to your gate in), a cozy wrap around coat (that doubles as a blanket during the flight), a lighter weight turtleneck (because I'm a turtleneck fanatic) and a hat (mainly because I've yet to discover the best way to pack hats, short of wearing them on flights).
What do you wear when you're jetting out of town?

the empire hotel

2 minute read
Jacket: Zara (old from last year); Top, skirt and bralette borrowed from Cynthia Rowley; Shoes: Saint Laurent; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban
While I've spent my fair amount of time at the Empire Hotel, either on vacation or the occasional oyster indulgence at Ed's Chowder House upstairs, I've never spent a proper week at the hotel during Fashion Week. And I have to say, this time around having done just that, it made all the difference!
Typically, Fashion Week madness can drive even the most seasoned veteran mad (and by no means do I consider myself one of those brave souls). Darting to and from shows at Lincoln Center, then back to your room for warmth and a quick outfit change and back out again for more shows downtown -- it's a crazed hustle, teetering the whole way on heels often ill suited for the weather.
This time around, I cut out some of my hustle. Given that the Empire is directly across the street from Lincoln Center, I was an easy stone's throw away from most of my shows (and heck, I could even do a little people watching from my hotel room window during my downtime). Plus, their bar downstairs makes for the perfect mid-day meeting point or late-night night cap, whichever happens to be your poison of choice.
Huge thanks again to the Empire Hotel for having me during Fashion Week!

I consider myself pretty fortunate in that my office environment is a pretty creative and open space. For ideas. For thought starters. For taking a crazy-outside-the-box-whim-of-an-inkling and turning it into reality.
So when it comes to dressing for the office, I'm always a little stumped. Because anything goes. Literally anything. You've all undoubtedly seen the Silicon Valley poster child. Hoodie. Jeans/khakis. Free t-shirt from a conference they attended last year. And don't get me wrong. I think this uniform works and I have lots of great coworkers who rock this most days. And a lot of coworkers who dress to all different types of drum beats. We're a big melting pot of style, culture, values and ideas. And I love it.
But it usually means, for me anyway, most days I'm a little overwhelmed by all the possibilities I could wear that day. Polished and professional? Casual? Minimalistic? Borderline on my way to the gym? (I don't do that last one very often, I promise.) Of course, a lot of what I channel into creating that outfit largely depends on what I have going on that day. A huge meeting or presentation? Brainstorm sessions that involve a lot of white boarding and running around time? Sitting at my desk and cranking out ideas? Or maybe I just woke up in a certain mood or have cocktails with a few girlfriends back in the city after work?
More often than not, I usually default to a blend of polished casual -- and I blame my reporting days for this. I loved feeling put together but needed the flexibility to run to my next interview. And while there's a lot less running at my current job to make deadlines these days, I still gravitate toward a certain aesthetic. Cropped ankle trousers are no stranger around here. I could create a flip book of just my outfits from the past 5 years that involve cropped ankle trousers. And these editor pants from Express are quickly joining the ranks of my MVPs. Top if off with a few more menswear inspired pieces, like this suit vest and understated blouse, with killer heels and I suddenly feel both chic and comfortable enough to hop onto a bike for my next meeting, if I need to.
Blouse, vest and pants all via Express; Shoes: Manolo Blahnik (crushing on this pair hard); Bag: Saint Laurent; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Cuff: Hermes
What's your work environment like and how do you dress for it? And while we're at it, are you free on March 3? Great. Join me at Express in downtown San Francisco for their Spring Fling party (if you recall, I helped host last year's even and it was a ton of fun!). The party kicks off at 6pm and lasts until 9. (Plus, a certain Kate Upton will be there.)
One last part to sweeten the deal? One lucky person will win a shopping spree with Kate Upton and a select group of Express customers the day of the party between 7:15-8pm at the downtown SF store. Travel isn't included. To enter, follow @expressrunway on Instagram and comment on my Instagram post from this morning so I know you've entered. No purchase necessary. Winner will be chosen at random. Open to legal U.S. residents and 18+ only. Void where prohibited. See official rules here.
Good luck and hope to see you there!

grin and bare it {going bare with bareminerals}

2 minute read
I'm currently writing this post over Utah and from the looks of our in-flight navigation map, smack dab over the Great Salt Lake. As you may have spied on Instagram, I've packed up again, this time to head to Milan Fashion Week (my first time ever!).
And while I'm beyond excited to jump right back into more fashion week chaos, let's talk beauty for a minute. I have to admit, my skin has been taking a bit of a beating lately. Between the recycled air on flights, biting winter winds and just not staying properly hydrated while traveling (hello, too much caffeine!), I'm finding some of my skin care routine mistakes are now catching up with me. (Insert forehead smack here.)
Luckily, my partnership with bareMinerals comes at a great time. If you've followed This Time Tomorrow for a while now, you probably already know I'm a huge fan of the brand and their clean, natural aesthetic. After all, any beauty company whose mantra is "Be original, be natural, be good" is definitely one I can get behind. They've recently launched their newest skin care line, Complexion Rescue and I've been loving the results thus far. Lightweight but with great coverage and extremely hydrating. It's a great fuss-free base foundation and keeps my skin slightly dewy with a natural glow -- two things I always find hard to "fake" during the winter because my skin takes on this weird combination of dry AND oily. I've always been a firm believer that less is WAY more when it comes to a lot of things -- beauty being chief among them -- and Complexion Rescue fits the bill for coverage with great skin care benefits.
Have any of you guys tried it out yet? Thoughts so far?

a new chapter

Jacket: Alexander McQueen (old, but crushing on this jacket); Sweater: Everlane (sold out, but similar style here); Skirt: Yigal Azrouel borrowed from Elizabeth Charles; Boots: Celine; Beanie: H&M; Bag: Chanel; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban
Full disclosure: I've written and rewritten this post about 5 times. I also intended to post it last week. And then decided to rewrite it. Again.
Not because I'm nervous to share my news (quite the opposite actually). It's more I can't believe some of what I'm typing is about to happen. The best way I can describe it is a deep rooted fear in jinxing something. Like if I hold on too closely to it now, it'll slip through my fingers. And that's the tricky thing about hope. We always try to hold out for it, but not overly so, because that means we might be disappointed in the end. It's quite the frustrating balance to strike.
But this time, I'm just going to say fuck it and jump. And man. I have to say, it feels good!
For starters, last Thursday marked my 29th birthday. Like a cold slap in the face, my last year of my 20s snuck up on me. Don't get me wrong -- I'm embracing it, full-heartedly. Like a last hurrah to a decade, to really run at full speed toward everything I've wanted to accomplish over the past few years, without looking back or thinking twice.
Which is why, next month, I'm moving to New York.
Even typing that sentence makes me deathly afraid that I'll wake up tomorrow and it won't be true. For those of you who have followed This Time Tomorrow for a few years now, you may recall I was planning on moving to New York a while back for work, until the start up I was working at went into acquisition talks with Google. Fast forward five years later and I've built a life that I really enjoy here in San Francisco, with friends that I call family,  a job that truly challenges me and some great relationships that have made me a stronger and better person in the end. I wouldn't change a single second of it, if given the opportunity.
But now I'm ready to start the next chapter. I'm afraid, excited, doubtful and hopeful all at the same time -- and it's reminding me that the unknown is something I shouldn't be fearful of. It should be a reminder of what it feels like to be alive.
Granted, having said all of this, I realize this isn't the most groundbreaking change or news I could be announcing, but for me, it's a longtime dream coming true. And I'm beyond excited to document and share the journey with you guys along the way -- even incorporating a little bit of a facelift around the blog and the content I focus on here at This Time Tomorrow. Style and fashion will always be a passion of mine, but I think the longer I stay in this community, the more I'm starting to evaluate what it is that inspires me and keeps me coming back to this creative space every day. Travel, lifestyle topics, restaurant reviews,  and general life updates have been things I've sprinkled in here and there from time to time, and rather infrequently at best. I want to change that. If there are past posts or types of content you really want to see here on This Time Tomorrow, I'd love to know.  If there's something I'm not doing enough of, I'd love to know. If there's something I'm doing that you hate, yes, I'd also love to know. You get the picture -- let's make this a conversation, shall we?
But for right now, I'd love to know, what dream of yours scares you and what are you doing today to scream at it in the face and leap into it?

the times they are a-changin’

2 minute read
This season marks one of my longest Fashion Week stays yet (as I may have selfishly extended it so I could spend my birthday in the city that I love). And while the cold is frigid, the pace is (sometimes) exhausting and living out of a suitcase can be downright frustrating, there's something undeniably addicting about New York. It's abrasive. It's loud. It's unapologetic. But it's also exhilarating. And I can never get enough when I'm here.
I've mentioned a few big life changes that are in the works around This Time Tomorrow and I'll be sharing the first round (fingers crossed), well, this time tomorrow. Until then, stay warm and go get into some trouble! (No really, do it. Within reason, of course.)

Another February and another fashion week is in full swing. I wore this Preen number for my first full day of shows (but promptly ran back to our hotel to throw on some tights once it started to flurry like this). Freezing bare legs aside though, there's just something so magical about New York in a mini snow shower like this. With cabs darting back and forth and the skyline peeking through the cloud cover -- it's like being caught in a child's snow globe.

make your le marc {marc jacobs beauty}

There's just something about a trench and a poppy red lip, right?
If you've been following This Time Tomorrow for a while now, you've probably noticed I like to keep my makeup somewhat effortless and classic. A clean face, perhaps a little cat eye swipe or the occasional punchy red lip. Like an incredible trench coat, I keep my beauty arsenal timeless, especially since most days, I'm constantly running around, back and forth between Mountain View and San Francisco, from work to cocktail hour -- often only to get back home around 9 or 10 most evenings. I need a routine and fool-proof pieces that can last me throughout a whirlwind day (and then some).
Naturally, when Marc Jacobs Beauty approached me about their new lipstick, I jumped at the chance to take it for a test drive. I started the day off with a light shadow dusting from their "Dreamer" Style Eye-Con set and a swipe of their Le Marc Lip Cream in "Oh Miley" red (it's officially one of my favorite reds now). The wearability didn't disappoint -- my pout lasted all day with minimal touch ups (always a plus for me, as I tend to not have time during the day at work to reapply). For drinks later that evening, I made sure to stash the Highliner gel crayon in my bag for a subtle cat eye look.
To see more from my day with @MarcBeauty, you can hop over to their Instagram account where they let me take the reins and make sure you browse around their full collection here. If you caught yesterday's studio visit with Marissa of Tempest + Bentley, then this sweater probably looks awfully familiar. And to say I'm obsessed with it, would be a severe understatement. I remember Marissa describing the style of this sweater before the sample was ever made and I was instantly hooked. An asymmetrical neckline cutout on a cable knit sweater? Sign this girl up.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! I'm off to Chico for the next few days (and may have to pop over to visit this lady and her adorable boutique)!

in the studio {introducing tempest + bentley}

7 minute read
I met Marissa Goodman when I started my first day at my new job in San Francisco, almost 5 years ago now. We were both forging our way at a scrappy (not-so-little) tech/apparel start up, working insane hours (as you do at any start up in the Valley) and still managing to throw on heels in the morning before commuting out on the 101. What I loved immediately about her was her effortless panache -- followed closely by her laid back, Pacific Northwest roots. She's equal parts elegant as she is outdoorsy and I love how comfortably she blends the two worlds.
I've had the pleasure of working with her for years since then, both of us moving on to Google, until she eventually left back in 2013 to follow a dream of hers -- to start her own knitwear line. I remember quite vividly how excited I was for her when she broke the news to me and have been waiting anxiously for the debut collection to drop ever since. Well, I'm ecstatic to report, Tempest + Bentley, a luxury sustainable knitwear line launched earlier last month and I, for one, have been eyeing every last piece. Hard. Sourced and produced entirely in the US, each sweater has a unique flair to it -- either from an exaggerated cable knit detail, or perhaps a peek-a-boo shoulder cutout -- that turns the notion of traditional sweaters on its head a bit. (You may have even caught me in a few right here and here.)
Lately, we've been chatting a lot about ladies who have taken the entrepreneurial leap, leaving their corporate day jobs to pursue their dreams and passions. Clearly, Marissa is no exception here. Earlier last week, we stopped by her adorable Cole Volley work studio to take a peek at the debut fall/winter collection, chat about what it takes to finally make that leap and even some of her favorite hidden gems around San Francisco.
Your path leading up to this point has been anything but traditional (read: how fun!). What's been your career trajectory until now? How did you get your start?

My first job in fashion, for a cashmere brand in San Francisco, started 2 weeks before I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. It was there that I was first introduced to the art of knitwear design. I was hooked. For ten plus years I worked for a number of San Francisco corporate fashion companies, small and big. I hit a point where I wanted to try something new and I didn’t want to climb the corporate ladder. After a brief stint refurbishing furniture, I was offered an opportunity to work for a fashion technology company, which is where I met you! One of my first tasks was to support engineers in creating trend and seasonal search engine phrases. I never thought I would end up in tech and the idea of working at Google, I never saw that in my career path. It was a great experience though and I learned so much about e-commerce. I like to work with tangible products and I’ve always loved sweaters, so it wasn’t surprising that I went back to my roots.
Is there anything in your past work lives that's helped you along the way in launching your own line?

Years of designing apparel, creating tech packs, fitting garments and visiting factories, definitely helped me figure out my process. Building a website is extremely time consuming and involved a lot of design strategy. I can’t imagine how hard it would have been if I hadn’t worked in e-commerce. I've been told many a person without technical expertise either go to agencies that are able to build their website, or they educate themselves using resources from the likes of makeawebsitehub.com and others in the different stages of getting a website operational.
Your commitment to sustainability really strikes a chord with us, especially when it comes to investing in quality, well-made pieces. Where does that commitment stem from?
The older I get, the more attracted I am to long lasting pieces, from a trend, style and high quality standpoint. It doesn’t feel responsible to buy throw away fashion, fashion I can only wear for a season before it’s out of style and fashion that wasn’t made ethically. Part of this attitude about fashion has been inspired by my husband’s work in sustainable food and agriculture. Waste is waste, whether it’s food or clothing. We live in a world where we need to be considerate of how things are made and be responsible for the waste we are creating.
So why sweaters? (Not that we're complaining, we love them!)
My first job was for a cashmere sweater designer that really let me explore knitwear design. I love the architecture of creating stitches and combinations of stitches. She also gave me a lot of beautiful sweaters and I’ve gravitated towards the coziness and warmth of a sweater ever since.
You've already worn the design hat multiple times in your life -- how is it different blazing your own line this time around?
Now I’m not just focused on design, I’m wearing all the hats needed to start a business. It’s a lot of work, but I do like that everyday is different. There’s not a lot of routine in my day to day. It keeps it interesting.
A good designer…is always looking for new inspiration. Some of my best ideas were created in unexpected moments.
One thing that you know now, that you wish you knew then…Just take a deep breath and everything is more than ok.
Who's the girl you're designing for? What is she like?
The Tempest + Bentley woman is a conscious shopper, both in terms of style and quality. She strives to find fashion forward pieces that she can wear again and again, that will last more than a season or two.
Not that we're asking you to play favorites, but what piece from your debut collection are you obsessed with? What's the story behind that piece?
I wear them all, but I would say I’m wearing the Charlie Croppy Cable the most right now. I love how chunky and cozy it is, but a little sexy too, with the cutout shoulder.
What are you wearing on repeat these days? What does your daily uniform look like?
I’m into long skirts and dresses right now. I can’t get enough. I just got a gorgeous embroidered skirt from Suno with a fringe on the hem that looks great with a lot of Tempest + Bentley styles. I’ve also been wearing a super skinny calf length dark denim skirt by McGuire Denim.
Any hidden San Francisco gems you care to share?
San Francisco is the best city for an urban hike. I’m always up for exploring Ocean Beach and the surrounding Forts and Cliffs. It’s fun to hit up the cool boutiques and cafes that continue to pop up in the Outer Sunset. I often pop into General Store.
Speaking of fun boutiques, where are you shopping these days in San Francisco?
Gimme Shoes, Mill Mercantile, Steven Alan, Elizabeth Charles, AB Fits, Rand + Statler and Decades of Fashion. Past Perfect, Heath Ceramics and Sue Fisher King and for home.
West Coast or East Coast?
West Coast. I was born in Portland, Oregon and I moved to San Francisco when I was 19. I crave visits to the East Coast, but the West Coast is home.
Name an item every woman should have in her closet…
Besides a cozy sweater a beautiful silk lounging robe.
We really admire the entrepreneurial jump you made to launch your own line. Any words of advice for someone looking to change their career drastically?
Well, thank you. I thought about this for a long time. It wasn’t a sudden decision. Do the research and take the time to make sure you are ready to make a change.
You're a long-time San Francisco resident (practically native now), what is it about this city you admire?
San Francisco has this great elegant, yet sporty balance. You can hike in Marin or surf at the beach and then take your pick of what exceptional restaurant you want to end your day in. There’s so much to do in the Bay Area. It’s impossible to get bored.
Most memorable place you've ever traveled to?
I used to travel a lot for work when I was in corporate design. India and Korea definitely left a lasting impression. The hospitality in both countries was over the top and the food and shopping in each was wonderful. I had never seen so many skyscrapers in one place in Seoul. The poverty in New Delhi was overwhelmingly sad.
Right now, I can't stop talking about…I just discovered Dr. Sylvia Earle this year. She’s a marine biologist and was the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She continues to dive at 79, and she’s focused on establishing marine protected areas around the world to save the oceans. She also constantly has a smile on her face and has the most positive outlook on life.
If I could trade places with anyone for a day, it would be…I’m scared of deep dark water, but if I could be Dr. Sylvia Earle for the day, and explore the depths of the ocean, that would conquer my fears I’m sure.
I feel the most comfortable when I'm…with my family, playing at the beach or in the country, with no plans, just enjoying the moment.
Make sure to check out the Tempest + Bentley collection right here and start clicking right this way if you want to follow Marissa and her T+B adventures on Instagram.
