what’s in my bag {evening edition}

2 minute read
Packing an evening bag (or clutch rather) can be tricky. You have limited space to pretty much hold your essentials for the night, so editing is key. Since I've gotten older, I've adopted more of a mom approach to my evening bag (yes, I really do bring a granola bar with me) but I think I've finally fine tuned it. Here's a peek inside...
The necessities: ID, cash, credit cards...because you clearly won't get far without them.
COVERGIRL Outlast Illumina lip color: I have a confession to make. I'm pretty awful at checking my lipstick for touchups, especially for evenings out. It somehow always slips my mind and before I know it, I'm taking my makeup off at the end of the night, wondering how long my lips were left looking like that. I know, I know. Blasphemy. But! I think I've met my match. This duo by COVERGIRL is the perfect night out pair in that the color lasts up to 24 hours, thanks to the topcoat gloss that locks in extra moisture. Just a few little swipes of the topcoat (in between cocktails) and I'm good to go.
Spare earrings: Just in case you need to add a little sparkle to your look.
Kind granola bar: I started bringing snacks with me for evenings out just in case I don't have time to grab something to eat before heading out. Granted, it definitely doesn't substitute a full meal before drinking, but it does help tide me over until I sit down and eat a proper meal (or get late night french fries, whatever comes first).
Crest 3D Whitening Strips: Lately, I've been packing these in my clutch to throw on before heading out (generally an hour before).
Altoids: Because you never know who you might strike up a conversation with at the bar. 🙂
And in case you're just joining now, you can see my other bag edits here and here.

what’s in my bag {weekender edition}

3 minute read
Ah, this week has been an intense one with lots of back to back photo shoots at work and some late night prep sessions. All the more reason to pack up my bags (again) for a quick little getaway to LA this weekend. Surprisingly, for how close LA really is to SF, I don't make it down quite as often as I'd like. I'm looking forward to some quality beach time with friends, my first ever surf lesson (wish me luck!) and a fun little project that's in the works -- more on that soon!
In the meantime, I'm continuing the momentum from Wednesday's "What's in my work bag" post with a follow up. This time we're taking a peek inside my weekender bag. Here's how to skip town, when you've only just booked your flight a few hours before...
Beach reading material: I limit myself to two magazines for quick trips like this. One that's more dense in content (like Monocle, which I love) and one more fashion related for easy beach flipping.
COVERGIRL Clump Crusher Mascara: For weekends that I just really want to getaway and unwind, I don't like to bog myself down with an excessive makeup routine (plus, it's great for your skin to just take a break every once in a while). Mascara always makes the cut though. If I go light on everything else, I love playing up my eyes and this one by COVERGIRL is quickly becoming an MVP in the rotation. The curved brush has very precise bristles that lets you load up on volume, minus the whole clump part.
La Roche Posay Moisturizer + SPF: I was recently introduced to La Roche Possay and am hooked on their entire skin care line. This moisturizer + SPF is a daily go-to, especially for my beach time ahead. It's light and non-greasy, which is perfect for me since my skin is oil-prone.
Diptyque "Vetyverio": Most days, I like to rotate through several different scents, depending on my mood and the day's activities. For a beach getaway like this, "Vetyverio" fits the bill -- it's light, airy and slightly woody, which seems quite apropos for sunny, surf-filled days.

Dermalogica face mask: After spending a lot of time in the sun lately, I've been making more of a point to set aside dedicated facial mask time.

Aesop hand + body balm: Well, I never really leave the house without these. Plus, I love how they smell combined with my Diptyque scent.

Crest 3D Whitening Strips: Throwing a few of these in my beach bag so I can throw them on while I work on my tan. Multi-tasker over here!

Cuyana travel cases: My friend Heather recently picked up some Cuyana travel cases for our trip to Turkey and I have to admit, I was so envious of her set the entire time that the minute we touched back down in SF, I promptly picked up a set of my own.

Third Love separates: While most of my bag is pretty laid back (read: lots of bathing suits and cover ups), I love bringing along little luxuries like this lacy number from Third Love. It just elevates casual separates, especially a slouchy tank.

what’s in my bag {work edition}

3 minute read
When you have a two hour, one way commute to work every day like I do, a well packed work bag becomes your lifeline. Over the course of the past few years and some unavoidable trial and error, I like to think I've perfected mine with the right amount of productive necessities and little luxuries that make my trek to Silicon Valley a lot less trek-like. Here's what I'm packing in my arsenal:
Pressed Juicery + Luna Bars: Most mornings, it's pretty unlikely I'll have time to sit down and enjoy breakfast, so I love being able to grab a Pressed Juicery juice and just go (more like run) to the shuttle stop. I usually reserve my Luna Bar for the return trip home -- they're so sweet, they're like little candy bar treats -- so they're the perfect indulgence and blood sugar boost I need to power through some end of day emails.
Daniel Wellington watch: A classic watch goes far. I love how this particular style instantly adds a bit more polish to an outfit so if I happen to forget accessories for the day, I know I can rely on this guy.
COVERGIRL Tru Blend foundation: My days run into overtime pretty quickly, with jam packed meetings and late happy hours back in San Francisco with coworkers. For that reason, I love make up routines that I can easily incorporate into my day, especially on the go. This COVERGIRL foundation provides a soft, natural finish that blends with my skin easily. Plus, it's oil-free so it won't clog my pores, a win, win in my book.
Sunglasses: Because, well, I would feel naked without them.
Laptop + earbuds + phone + tech accessories: You know, the usual suspects. The lighter, the better. The day I got my MacBook Air, I may have done a little happy dance.
Reading material: For the times I forget to recharge my computer (which is often), I try to always have a few magazines or books on hand.
Crest 3D White Strips: A few years back, my dentist talked me into trying some in-office bleaching treatments (I guess I couldn't hide my coffee habit from him, surprise, surprise). I loved the results, but since then have been searching high and low for a less time intensive and more budget friendly option. A few of my coworkers have been trying out some at home treatments so I've been eager to test out Crest's whitening strips, especially since they're easy enough to throw on while I'm catching up on emails on the bus. Thus far, I'm a fan and have already received a few unsolicited compliments from people (always the best feeling!).
Notebook: I think this may have something to do with my previous life as a newspaper reporter, but I feel a bit lost if I don't have a notebook with me to quickly jot down ideas, quotes, someone's name that I need to follow up with about something, or sometimes even just sketch or two.
And that's it! What do you pack in your work bag that helps you tackle the day?

what’s in my bag?

2 minute read
You can tell a lot about a gal by what she totes around in her bag on a daily basis. Here's a peek into mine:
1.) Celine trapeze bag: I think this bag may have officially turned me into a bag lady. Don't get me wrong, I'm still a shoe gal at heart, but I have a wandering eye...
2.) Yves Saint Laurent cat eye sunglasses: I'm a big sucker for tortoiseshell and cat eye shapes when it comes to sunglasses. This pair had me at hello.
3.) Proenza Schouler wallet: I'm obsessed with this wallet as it doubles as a chic clutch when necessary!
4.) Michael Kors watch: Glued to my wrist.
5.) Notebook: I always have a small notebook on me for jotting down random ideas, addresses, stores or places I pass and want to go back and visit. Remnant of my days as a reporter.
6.) The Perks of Being a Wallflower: You'll rarely catch me without a book -- I enjoy my downtime during my work commute with a good page turner. While I finished Perks a while back now, I'm making my way onto Cloud Atlas -- have any of you read it yet? Thoughts?
7.) The New Yorker: My sister asked me what I wanted for Christmas last year -- I told her a subscription to The New Yorker. Hands down, still one of my favorite gifts! (Thanks sis!)
8.) Android phone: My other left arm. Can't function without it!
9.) Chanel Rouge Coco lipstick: A moisturizing light lipstick, perfect for daytime wear.
10.) Chanel compact: Touch ups on the go -- comes in handy when you're running from a late work meeting to happy hour, which I often am.
11.) L'Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes: I'm a mascara junkie and like trying new kinds often. I recently got hooked on this particular one by L'Oreal and love how dramatic they make my lashes look.
12.) Hand Sanitizer: I take antibacterial hand gel with me wherever I go. I'm currently using one which is French lavender scented and great for travel. I'm very concious about hygiene so I tend to go through a lot of sanitizer, especially when I'm travelling.
Now that I've shared mine -- do tell! What's in your bag?

what’s in my bag?

2 minute read

They say you can learn a lot about someone just by looking through the contents of their purse, so when the lovely folks over at Rachel Roy sent me this darling quilted Rachel Rachel Roy bag -- I figured it was the perfect time to spill. My must-haves that is.  Here's a little about what I have to tote with me during the day to feel ready for everything I have to tackle:

1.) My iPhone goes everywhere -- without it, I'm practically missing my left arm! (I'm left handed.) My favorite apps? Twitter, Instagram, Yelp and, of course, Words with Friends.

2.) Assortment of business cards, necessary for those after-work events when I don't have time to run back home and grab some. Speaking of my business cards, I just ordered some new ones from a company like Metal Kards. They look so much more professional than my old ones and I can't wait to start handing them out at my next event.

3.) You all know I love my sunglasses -- especially this pair of Karen Walkers. They're glued to my face whenever I head out the door.

4.) Two types of lipstick, one bright pop of color (I love Revlon's "Persian Melon", the other a more neutral, day time appropriate color (Chanel's "Monte Carlo"). You never know what may come up after work that you might need to glam up for.

5.) Small, compact wallet. This particular cobalt blue one is from H&M. While I've never been much of a wallet person (it's usually just where my receipts go to die), I think I'm ready to invest in a nice one. I'm not sure which brand I want to buy but I think I'll need to get quite a big one. I'm struggling to fit much in this wallet at the minute!! Any suggestions?

6.) Always, always, always have a book on me. I love being able to pop it out and read a few pages while on the bus to work.

7.) My Moleskin. I like to take notes. A LOT of notes. About a lot of random things. This one in particular I've been filing away everything from to-do lists to outfit ideas -- sometimes when the mood strikes ya, you just have to write it down!

8.) Keys. Must have these. Landlord does NOT like it when I bug her to let me into the building because I forgot said keys.

9.) As for the random bottom contents of the purse, it's usually an assortment of bobby pins and hair ties. Because my hair is a beast to tame! Trust me!

Want to see what I wore with this trusty tote? Stay tuned later this morning -- outfit post to follow!
