A few weeks ago…

I ventured out to the Hamptons with a small handful of friends, one of whom happened to grow up near Lyon, France. When we all decided to visit a sunflower field in North Fork, naturally we felt the need to know the French word for sunflower. “Tournesol,” he told us — the loose translation meaning “turn to the sun.”

Perhaps I’m just being overly sentimental, but doesn’t that feel all too fitting for the end of summer? Much like sunflowers who crane their golden faces to bask in the glow of a late August sun, we too, turn toward the sun — or perhaps better yet, we fly toward it like Icarus, eager to make the last few blazing sunsets of the season count. I smiled at that thought, as I walked past row upon row of flowers, bees buzzing in a melodic hum around us.

It’s never easy to say goodbye to summer (especially one as short as this one!), but she certainly makes for an unmissable grand exit when she leaves us.
