play it again: volume 36

2 minute read

Normalcy is terribly overrated. Give me your quirky, your weird, your delightfully inquisitive, your left of center, your odd, your bizarre, your playful grin and your mischievous wink. Anyone can blend in — into a crowd or a social media feed — but tell me, where’s the fun in that?

As for this week's playlist? Let's have some fun, shall we? I'm sure I'm not alone here when I admit I've only really been listening to Beyoncé's Renaissance album on repeat lately. And I'll throw in Maggie Roger's new album for good measure — with some Olivia Newton-John to top it all off. Hope you enjoy!

creativity and algorithmic whims

3 minute read

Like many other children of the 90s and early aughts, I'd look forward to weekend afternoons cutting pages out of fashion magazines. Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Vanity Fair lay scattered across the floor, as I'd sit admiring elaborate photoshoots created by a whole industry of creatives I couldn't quite yet articulate to myself. Arthur Elgort, Peter Lindbergh, Annie Leibovitz. I'd tape their work to my wall, sometimes floor to ceiling, only to start over the next month, surrounded by fashion yes, but bigger than that, surrounded by stories. Much like the books I read at the time, I loved the escapism of it all. The dream, the narrative, the simple notion of asking, "what if?" and immortalizing that idea with the click of a shutter button. A world encapsulated in a single photo that dares you to dream about something. That's what I love about photos. It starts the story. It's up to the viewer to finish it.

In a lot of ways, I pinch myself quite often that this career path I stumbled upon years ago affords me to do what I used to only daydream about in my childhood bedroom. Sure, it may not grace a page where Vogue sits atop the masthead but it's still a little dream world of my making. And the fact that I get to share it with other fellow old souls like you all, well, that's more than 17-year-old Krystal could have ever imagined.

Photography has been my voice for so long. A means of writing those extra thousand words that I just couldn't utter myself. So now that Instagram has officially shifted to focus more on video content, I won't lie, it makes me feel a bit disheartened. Like I have to change my voice to appease something.

Of course, there's a whole argument to be made that the trend of creativity always following algorithmic whims may not be a positive one, but that's another discussion for another day. For now, what I'm trying to understand is how 17-year-old Krystal might envision her dream worlds in video form. What does that look like? What does it feel like? In a lot of ways, it's as if I'm sitting on the floor again in my bedroom, ideas sprawled at my feet and whispering, "What if...?" to the walls around me, searching for an answer.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter...how are you feeling about Instagram's recent doubling down on video content?

Press play!

As promised, I'm so excited to share with you guys this amazing video we crafted around our Ocean's 4 inspired shoot (you can read more about the backstory here). Not only was it a dream to shoot something so creative and editorial in Carolina Herrera gowns around New York, but getting to work alongside these ladies, whom I've admired for years now and am lucky enough to call friends -- well, it made the day that much more special to me.

Recently, I've been thinking a lot about this influencer/content creator/blogger (we need a better catch all name here) space I find myself in and more specifically, I think a lot about the content I both create and consume -- and what motivates me on both fronts to do either. Personally, I think we can all agree this space is extremely saturated and I don't say that with a heavy heart -- I think it's amazing so many men and women have been able to make their livelihoods and careers out of such a democratic space as this. But it also means there's that much more content to digest. To scroll through. To like. To comment. To watch. And if I'm being more honest, I wonder how much I actually STOP to appreciate what is being created, because of the daunting amount of content at my fingertips. To put it lightly, it's overwhelming -- perhaps you feel the same? And I completely understand this works the other way too: how much do people pause to actually appreciate the content I'm creating and producing? They say you have 2 seconds to grab someone's attention on any social media platform, and I'm sure by the time I've written that sentence, it's changed to 1.5 or less. So how am I grabbing you in those 2 seconds? I'm not sure of that answer.

In a space that's constantly changing and growing, I've realized I've always been happiest when I'm bringing a vision for a shoot to life -- for the sponsored shoots, yes, but even more so for the editorial, non-sponsored, I'm-just-dressing-up-with-my-girlfriends-for-the-fun-of-it shoots. Those are the ones that reawaken why I do what I do: purely for the joy of creating and sharing a world with you all, and I hope that joy comes through here.

Sai, Karen, Helena and I are looking to make this a series moving forward -- so please let me know if you have any ideas for the next shoot! We're brainstorming now! In the meantime, HIT PLAY below!
